Wang Fuman became famous when a photo showing the Chinese boy with frozen hair went viral on Chinese social media in 2018. His family could not afford to buy him a hat to cover his head on his daily hour-long trek to school. Stories about the “ice boy” touched the hearts of people around the world, and many sent donations to help Wang and his family. A year after first meeting him, South China Morning Post video producer Tom Wang caught up with the “ice boy” and found out that while the young student and his family have a new home, they still struggle to make ends meet.

Sad but to put ourselves in her shoe.. most likely she had it more rough when growing up in such conditions. That mother is awful. The boy said how she use to beat him in a previous video. She left because they were poor and only came back now because they built a new house.
Beatings is common in parts of China for discipline although idk the context of the video u watched. I was beat as a child when I did something bad. It's not a great way of teaching your kids as we grow up to respect you out of fear and not actual love and respect. In fact you can get hit with a ruler on your palm in some school's in China. It is part of our culture but we are slowly changing and it is becoming less common. However population of china is pretty big so unoo it prob take a while

@Kevin. Not every parent beats their children to teach them discipline but they do it to take out their own frustrations. Studies have shown beating kids doesn't lead to great grades but high suicide rates. Parents can't beat strangers because it can lead to prison, but their kids will tolerate the abuse. Culture is a weak argument for abuse. One child policy in China led to female feticide. And abusers will say that's also part of our culture. Only an abuser would say that's ok.

i'm so sad he had to drop school and give up on his education... for most people that's important for our future but poor people have to drop school because they can't afford it and it's easier for them to get a job with a bad payment. i feel so sorry for taking my education for granted and complaining a lot about it
It's the cycle of poverty :( i hope he did not give it up and continue with his education. It is his only hope to get a chance of becoming successful although I know it may not be possible. It's a cruel world we live in

I could care less about judging. For all we know someone gave them to her when she was looking for work in the city. All that matters to me is that the kids are happier because they have their mom with them again.

she said she worked in resturant for 14 hours a day only to stay alive after leaving her family where she lived in horrible conditions give her a break man you have no idea what shes through this is not a reality show this is real life and in poverty we humans become the animals that we really are.

That is why they do not need a bigger, better house. all they need is job! For living. I have lived in a house that has a toilet, no bedrooms. Our house was like 14 sqm. And that includes, toilet, sink, and the place where we sleep in and yes! Dining area all in one. We just need job, to make ourselves slowly prosfer.

I'm glad the dad and the children are happy, but the mom seems selfish. All she wants is money. Why else would she return after they got a new house? Even the daughter isn't sure of her mom's intentions.
That's what I thought. As soon as she heard they got a new house she came back, and when she came back she only asked for money and wanted to divorce him, even though he's giving her the money. I do understand her hardships but it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

When you're that poor and you literally fight everyday to live and fend for yourself and provide for basic necessities, you become cold....itsnot to buy an expensive car or house..its to buy food, her basic desire, maybe to buy a soap for taking a bath....easier said then done...Stop being so judgemental.

I feel like she heard about the donations and came running back. That was my initial thought. I love the little boys attitude, what a sweet kid so full of positivity. I’m curious why the mother and his brother are still living in the old house, they could have their own floor in the new one. I really hope the dads brother doesn’t drop out and finishes his education. I can’t imagine what this family goes through, it makes me very appreciative for what I have in my own life.
People donated sooooo much money to them but they barely saw any of it. Whoever took care of it, the city or whoever took most of it. If someone is able to help them and is willing they need to go and help them in person. Don’t trust these agencies.

Would be great to see if they got relocated as part of the Poverty Alleviation program it mentions at the end of video it said most of the residents are being relocated to new housing.
She truly is amazing. There are many grandmothers like her (including my own) who worked so hard to help their grandchildren and family. It breaks my heart to see that the mother does less work than the grandmother, who really should have been retired by now.

She heard the story of 56000 pounds being donated to the kid which is what her husband would make in like 10 years of work. She didn't get the memo that the charity only gave them 900 and kept the rest "for other children in need". So she wanted a piece of that windfall. But upon realising she didn't have the full story and she couldn't simply freeload and spend it all she realised she made the wrong choice. Hence wanting to divorce. Best part is she blames him for all the issues and being poor. It's like it completely goes over her head she is a human being and can work and try to be successful to... But nope, better blame everyone else.

I was not expecting that. Seems like the mother came back probably out of being embarrassment for leaving her kids because his story went global. And it's sad that the grandmother was forced to continue to live there. I watched a documentary about the new settlements they are making them move into. They're apartments mostly. Hopefully, she'll have a better life.

@Erinne Cat Yeah, I cut the mother some slack. I don't know what her life while growing up was like, how old she is, how she got pregnant... She simply seems unwilling to resign herself to the life she's been handed.

The person my sister is married to because of my father is living in a house made out of dirt bricks with dirst layers. she has 4 kids and the husband is doing no work the husband's father and mother grow spicies/potatoes/tomatoes/onions on their farm land and that's what they eat whole year i wish to help them after i complete my education! and i hate that person for making my sister and her kids starve

Phone bills are extremely cheap in China. Did you know you can get 60 GB of data a month for 8 or 9 dollars in Vietnam? It's similar in China. The phone is probably less than 100 dollars but easy to break. Clothing is also very cheap in China.

It’s messed up to remove yourself from your children and when that kid asked her if she can come back they have fame now the kid obviously told her everything that’s happening so she’s like count me back into your life when they had nothing she gave him nothing and gave up on being a mother.

In situations like this it's better to live in small families or else you go poor because you need to care for so many people. And they are already poor.
