You can drive 3-4 hours and also be in the Appalachian Mountains in NE Alabama. Go to Mentone Alabama and rent a cabin with Mountain views. So you can go Orange Beach in 3 hours or 3-4 hours from Montgomery and go to the Mountains. The city of Mentone Alabama is on top of Lookout Mountain.

It's March 2023 let me update my comment. We got a new chief of police Daryl Albert a year or so ago and he has really improved the crime drugs etc with his officers under him.
My neighborhood is improving. Alot more like the old neighborhood I knew 30 years ago.
Our city council is working on homeless and squatter situation.
I at one point was wanting to move but have decided to stay.

@Living in Montgomery Alabama yes it does. Other things that are being done by a certain leader that is presently in office, that has brought other cities down, is showing its effect on Montgomery but we're praying he gets out of office this year. Other things are improving. I'm very involved with the police in reference to my neighborhood and have been for 6 years. That also makes a difference. People have to get involved and not be afraid of the people bringing your neighborhood down. They will eventually get the message and either straighten up or move. It can be done.

You are going to love it here in Montgomery, Alabama. I was in Vegas last week! I love Montgomery, Alabama....& you will too !! We have a new Whitewater Rafting Park opening up, next year 2022. Do not be tricked into thinking that you will need to reside in a city that is located "outside" of Montgomery....or "near" Montgomery. You will be conducting all of your "real" business in Montgomery: jobs, shopping, church, recreation, entertainment....so, you might as well live where you, " work, learn & grow." The Interstates 85 & 65 are a bother, if you live outside of Montgomery & have to travel back & forth daily. Avoid that drama & buy your home in the City of Montgomery, Alabama !!!!

I would have said the amount of rain we get in Montgomery AL is immense! Typically when it rains it does not rain by inches it rains by feet if not gallons. I have two planters near our pool and they fill right up with water which is Amazing to me... Also rain is good refill up the pool but can;t just go out and mow your lawn when it rains so much. Also customer service is one of the worst I have ever experienced in my life. Medical billing is very bad, always get surprise medical bills and have to call call call email email to get these headaches resolved and no one can do their job very well. Montgomery is like moving to a different country but the homes are beautiful here and affordable before Covid came.

Everything is very run down, not well kept, garbage everywhere. And the paper mills make a sewage smell that can be smelled within a 50 mile radius. People always say things like this about Montgomery but even back in my youth when I was doing some really wild stuff I've never seen anyone get robbed in broad daylight, held at gunpoint, or carjacked. Most of the property crime is kids stealing from unlocked cars or running in someone's house because they left a game console/TV box out in plain sight. Most of the violent crime is drug/gang-related and usually doesn't spill over to the average person. It's the same as any other city imo... Tuscaloosa is half the size with way higher housing costs, lower pay, and pretty much the same crime rates.
