Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

Ya
Hear, hear
They probably got an actual MTI to do it, since they know exactly how to do it right.
I became a big fan of R Lee Ermey, the drill seargant in Full Metal Jacket, after finding out he was a real retired MTI for the Marines, and actually had a long list of minor roles and dedicated shows. If I recall correctly, he was the only enlisted marine to ever be promoted after retirement, due to his outreach post military. He had two shows I used to find clips of on youtube. One was Mail Call, where he'd get letters from strangers asking questions about the military, and he would try his hardest (and often fail) not to lose his sh@t and call questions stupid, lol. Another show was about the development of firearms (Lock N Load on the history channel) as told through the lens of an angry drill seargant. One of the funniest scenes, apparently he held a grudge against this one guy who sent in a letter to Mail Call claiming this one story of a US soldier hip firing an M1917 (heavy machine gun normally fired from a tripod) in combat had to be untrue because of how heavy the gun was, and the amount of recoil it produces... So Ermey called his @$$ out by name on the M1917 episode of Lock N Load, picks one up (as an old man now) and starts hipfiring it himself, lol.
Such a bummer he passed, that guy was hilarious.

The gun scene is a great example of how humans can have different types of intelligence. While Gump was not gifted IQ wise which would allude to lack of creativity and conceptual skills taught in text books, it was pretty obvious he was physically gifted when it came to more tangible concepts like assembling a weapon and ping pong. This is what happens when you treat people as equals instead of pandering or pacifying.
@@geeksquad2575 ah yes the military. A massive fighting force built on a foundation of tradition, honor, and a clearly defined, rigorously enforced, hierarchical command and control infrastructure complete with dozens of different methods for signifying rank and status at all times. To the point that your rank literally is put before your actual name. Where you must make a physical gesture demonstrating your awareness of, and implied submission to, anyone of a higher rank immediately entering their general vicinity. Clearly a place where all human life is treated with equal value /s. And that's before even beginning to touch on the whole conducting 100s of drone strikes with little regard for civilian casualties and other collateral damage, or the secret detention centers and blacksites designed specifically to avoid providing the people in them with even the most basic human rights. Or the whole existence of the military pay grades where your pay is proportional to rank. The idea the military treats people as equals couldn't be further from the truth. That's not to say it isn't for a good reason. The truth of the matter is people are not all equal. Not even close. This entire myth of humans being equal is something perpetuated by the weak and dumb to rationalize their own lack of ability and to make mediocrity a virtue. That's not to say people don't deserve basic human rights and to be treated with at least a certain minimum level of decency. Not does it excuse racism or any other prejudice. The issue with racism is that in no way is race an effective determinate of potential, ability or value. It prioritizes skin color (an almost completely meaningless characteristic) at the expense of the consideration of factors which *do* actually mean something. It's just another method at attempting to subvert society's ability to effectively assess an individual's value. Which ironically is exactly what acting like everyone is equal does as well.
@@e2rqey you completely missed the point chief. In a basic training cycle everyone is equal. They're not military, They're not civilian either. They're just molds, slowly being molded into infantrymen. Also I'm unsure why you brought race and racism into the mix? As far as pay grades go, you're equal to your same pay grade, and the reason rank structure exist is to ensure a chain of command is in place so that the most experienced men are the ones doing the leading, and if they're killed or incapacitated there's someone else ready to take their place albeit with less experience but with more than the lower pay grade. Also enlisted personnel don't "make a physical gesture of implied submission" to any higher rank. Just officers of which are significantly fewer than the enlisted personnel and are trusted with much more responsibility and are saluted as a sign of respect. Id like to point out that most detention centers and black sites are rarely manned by regular military but by private contractors or other alphabet soup agents. If course witb exceptions like Abu Geraib or gitmo (excuse any spelling errors) and a few other locations that were exposed BY the military. In Basic Training you're usually assigned a "buddy" whom you're supposed to stick to and look out for each other no matter what. (This is also part of training for wartime, because you're much less likely to get killed if there's someone watching your back or can get you help if you're wounded.) Bubba and Gump were probably assigned to each other, and luckily they bonded well. Things can and have gotten ugly when two paired soldiers didn't get along, although if the acrimony is bad enough usually one of the soldiers gets reassigned to a different section/platoon.
I know people think drill sergeants are bullies, but in my experience this is literally their job. Seeing your potential, getting it to come to the surface and using compliments so you also see the worth buried deep down that you've been ignoring.

One recruit who took part in the Vietnam War wrote later that once he realised that the drill sergeant's spiel was more sound than fury, it was easier to take. Having said that he did not seem to encounter anyone as bad as Hartman in "Full Metal Jacket".
@@thesecatsarecrazy567 I was well known by the platoon, but nonexistent to the drill sergeants. I treated it like incarceration and manipulated situations to make me and my battle buddies lives easier, because I'd been lucky enough to figure it out beforehand. The secret is just to keep the same, neutral countenance from beginning to end, never look nervous and take every command literally. I was the epitome of the Gray Man.
A drill sergeant once asked me if I licked windows and while standing at parade rest, without moving anything but my mouth, and with the most neutral and serious tone I replied with, "Yes, drill sergeant." It wound up being the correct answer. The drill sergeant laughed and never spoke to me again, because he realized I was a) maybe 'tarded a little and/or b) solid!
Drill Sergeant couldn't even berate him cause he's doing everything he's supposed to be doing. He took every command to the heart and did what was asked of him while still maintaining a conversation with his best friend.
And it was the kind of conversation where his friend did all the talking and he did all the listening.
@@zhouwu Who's to say Forrest didn't interact with Bubba during this convo?

Not sure. Who? What's the textbook answer?
The most supportive drill instructor ever😂
I love how gump listened to every word his friend said and never ever interrupted
This scene is actually very heartwarming for me - the Drill Sergeant was one the few people that really discovered Forrest's big potential
This Drill Sergeant was like the father Gump never had, but definitely deserves. A leader who was proud of his achievements, hard work and moral ethic. As harsh as he may sound speaking to Gump, this is normal for Drill Sergeants to speak in this volume as a training method. It's what he says to and does for Gump that makes this sergeant one of my favorite portrayals of what it truly means to be a military leader and what they fight for. Makes me so proud of my living Papaw, who was an actual drill sergeant in Vietnam from 1968-1971 when he was in his early 20's!
Imagine, Bob Ross was a drill sergeant.
I love how sarge is just yelling compliments at Forrest
Anyone else think it’s funny that the Drill Sergeant doesn’t mind Bubba talking about shrimp?

A drill sergeant shouting compliments. One of my favorite scenes.
I saw 'Forrest Gump' when it was first released at the movies. It affected me greatly that Bubba was killed. To this day I tear up when he says he wants to go home. I had friends and colleagues who are Vietnam Vets, I have been to Vietnam several times myself. For those who lived in the 60's and 70's, as the classic 'A tale of two cities' saying goes, 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times'.
Impressive sir..... Just impressive 👏👏
If you think about joining the army was the best thing that ever happened to Forrest. He was finally in a place where he could fit in to some extent, he had the respect of his superiors, met two of his closest friends, saved his entire platoon and became a national hero, learned his skill for ping pong which allowed him to play professionally and started a successful shrimping business in memory of his close friend with the help of his other close friend
I struggle with belief. But as time goes by, I feel that we are all where we are supposed to be at times. Still can't reconcile that to drug addicts on Kensington St. in Philadelphia though.

He explained how every military order works in less than 40 sec. A real genius
Credit to that actor for delivering that dialogue properly like a drill sergeant would and not as comedic lines. R Lee Emery is still the best but this guy is great too.
Funny thing R Lee Emery said that his character basically did everything an actual drill sergeant ISN'T supposed to do and in real life would probably get kicked out for being a psycho
@@Igarappappa Watch Boys in Company C. R Lee Ermy was the DI in it. That was a way better DI than FMJ.
No one will ever match R. Lee Ermey's style as a drill. No one.

Speaking of R. Lee Emery, I feel this was a missed opportunity for R. Lee Emery to cameo in this scene as the Gump's drill instructor (only this time around, he's not playing one that doesn't abuse his troops).

Fun Fact: Dave Chappelle was offered the role of Bubba but turned it down.
I don't want to armchair quarterback that decision - but I honestly do think it was probably the right move. He later regretted it, but I bet he doesn't regret it now.
www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/why-dave-chappelle-turned-down-role-in-forrest-gump-and-later-regretted-it.html/
The money could have been huge, but Chappelle is one of those people who knew who they were from early on. A dyed in the wool Comedian.
Another five or so years though, someone will deepfake both his face and voice into Gump.
What a supportive Drill Sergeant
My dad grew up in the same time frame Gump did. Even served in the Army in 67-69. He laughed so hard at the bit where the drill instructor asked Forrest the question.
That drill sergeant was the only person to recognize Forrest’s potential.
Short version: my DS, summer 1966, was wounded in Korea, spring 1953. He was evacuated to the clinic in Japan where my father was assigned. I would walk up and down the ward saying Hello to the wounded soldiers. I told the DS we may have met. Basic training was a cake walk.
Bless his heart
I had boot camp conquered before I ever got on the bus. I knew what it was going to be: Lots of physical activity, lots of people screaming at me (whether they had an actual reason to or not), lots of head games. Don't let them rile you; do what you're told, WHEN you're told to do it, do it the WAY they want you to do it, and don't be a smart ass. You're GOING to f__k up once or twice, LEARN from it.
Those first couple of days are going to be harsh. Deal with it. You will get used to it.
And... oh, yeah. You're GOING to say it every damned morning in basic. "What in the f__k am I doing HERE?" Say it, remember than you signed on the line to do it, remember that it is not forever, and get on with your day. You *WILL* get through this, and you *WILL* be stronger for it.
@@xaenon I couldn’t agree with you more! My Father was a tough disciplinarian, he made those drill instructors look like old ladies when it came to getting his message across. I was well prepared for what lay ahead in boot camp. I actually enjoyed it, minded my manners and followed orders, never had any problems to speak of. I don’t think people really appreciate the job the instructors do with a pack of somebody else’s kids thrown at them, and turn them into responsible young soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, quite a task I must say.
@@danielpurcell7395 Agreed.
