    like this explaination . a quick showing of the difference. As a novice synology user, I have used ONLY the mapping drive setup. this really helps understanding the benefits of synology drive app which I have missed. thank you

    For documents I would say use drive. For videos, large iphone backups etc I would just use mapped drive

    I would also mention the fact that when you work with files which are in very deep subfolders you may not see your file when using Synology Drive because it doesn’t sync files whose path is longer than 247 characters (windows 10). That’s why I can’t work with Synology drive even if I wanted.

    Depends if you want or need remote access. When I’m home it’s all samba for me. Great video as always!

      I access my local network via VPN which is more secure than forwarding ports or using quickconnect. Plus, WireGuard is so lightweight you barely notice a speed difference.
      I still use Drive instead of mapping because it's a lot easier to use the Drive app on mobile (compared to DS File or mapping). Drive's desktop client also offers additional features such as: one way syncing (either direction), two way syncing, backup, option to retain copies on the NAS even if you delete it from the client side, and the option to download or keep certain files on the client for instant access, offline access, or as a backup. Try getting a document from your mapped drive while you're offline. It's not gonna happen lol.

    Personal experience: Adobe Lightroom with 226,000+ photos and previews doesn't work well with Synology Drive. I cannot disparage the product. Lightroom catalog and previews are 604GB of data in 304,563 files and 64,543 folders. To make matters worse (or is this the root issue?), every photo added causes a change to the catalog. Re-syncing a 2.3GB file for every photo added is insanely slow.
    I switched to: map the raw photos to the Synology, keep the catalog and previews local. Lightroom is configured to backup when exiting Lightroom. It backs up to the Synology.
    This is a special use case. If you're wondering where Synology Drive is a bad option, Lightroom is one case. If your use looks like this, then map the drive.
    The Synology has 3-2-1 backups.

    I'd love to use Synology Drive for all these features you demonstrated. However, I can't figure out how to set up a folder structure with permissions correctly. Ex. An "Accounting" shared/team folder where Group Acct has permisisons has 2 subfolders, "General" (which allows broad access) and "Financial" (which is more restricted). This works well using mapped drives. The "General" users can't even see the "Financial" folder. But, using SynDrive, they can see both folders. Any way to fix this? I'd love to use Synology Drive but this (and collaboration issues) are preventing it.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před rokem

      That specific use case unfortunately is where Synology Drive is limited. Have you considered breaking them into two separate shared folders and then having two different team folder configurations set up?

    • @cslink23
      @cslink23 Před rokem

      @@WunderTechTutorials thanks for the reply. That may be the solution. To be clear... Instead of "Accounting" at the base, I'd put the 2 subfolders at the base, right. I did think about that but it seemed messy when you have to do that for multiple departments. I'll take that (if I'm understanding you) as it's still better than using mapped drives. Thanks!

      @@cslink23 Correct - two separate shared folders for Accounting and Finance. Agreed that it might not be the best solution, but it should work!

    What happens I delete the file on my local drive? I assume it gets deleted on the NAS as well. Is there a way to sync files without the risk of deleting them or is that just the way syncing is supposed to work? Maybe syncing along with a backup version history is the solution for me.

    Thanks for this great informative video. I have one question though: what happen when you have a group of users mapping the synology drive to their PCs & when one open a file, will the others be able to open the same file? or will it be locked?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 2 lety

      I honestly haven't used Synology Drive this way so I can't give you a true answer. They will both end up editing a file on their local PC, but how Synology merges those changes is what I'm not sure about. I apologize for that!

    Hello, is it possible that you can work hybrid? so local on office you work directly on the synology nas share and outsite you work with synology drive? in the same share. is this a normal way to work or do you avoid that?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Unfortunately, no. You have to pick one or the other in terms of a sync task or just a mapped drive.

    The problem that I’m having with using Synology Drive Client Sync Task on a Team Folder is that when User A will open an excel file and
    sometime later, User B opens the same excel file and doesn’t get any indication that User A has it open;
    through the course of the day they both might make changes to it and whoever saves it last “wins”.
    Do you have/know any solution for this?
    Thank you

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před rokem

      Unfortunately, I don't think Synology will handle coauthoring properly. Generally, that's something that Microsoft and Google seem to handle pretty well but Synology isn't there yet.

  • @shunreighsumilang3172

    Can a user put a Synology folder. In other places or other country? So that he can put and remove a folder on a folder.
    Like a mapped network drive?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před rokem

      You'll need a way to connect to it from outside of the local network. Generally, a VPN is the best option.

    If I work with the Synology Drive, will the data be synchronised directly via the local network or will it work via the Internet? Because I can also use the Synology Drive away from home. This raises the question of whether the mapped version at home naturally accesses directly via the local network and the synology drive does not access directly via the local network? Can anyone give me an answer as to how this works? Because with larger files, it would be important to know what you are working with at home...

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před rokem

      It depends what you're using for the sync task. If you're home and using the local IP, it'll be local. If you're using QuickConnect externally, it'll be through the internet, but should be smart enough to access it locally when on the same network.

    I use synology drivewhen at home and my remote users on the internet have access to some shares through Webdav. I NATed traffic on port tcp 5006 through my firewall and works fine. On the opposite I was never able to NAT synology drive (port tcp 5001-5002) the same way i did for webdav... do you have any idea why ?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 2 lety +1

      I haven't tried to use WebDAV with Synology Drive, but have you tried to set up a custom port for it (Login Portals in the control panel)? That might allow you to separate the traffic, though I admit that this is nothing more than an educated guess.

      Synology Drive syncing, if that's what you're referring to, is port 6690. Drive itself uses 5000 and 5001 by default.

    Hello, Love the videos and I found this one to be most related to my question. First time NAS owner here so I was wondering what is the recommendation for someone who is a content creator and needs to keep the files off the local pc (they become very large) and not have an impact to speeds for file sync or slow down editing programs. I setup the synology drive along side the network drive mapping and would like to know the best option available for which storage is better for editing then rendering and allow it to cache on my pc but then all files go back to synology and nothing is actually locally saved. Secondly, if I missed this in your videos, but what's the best setup for VMWare Workstation to sync the vm files and not reduce speeds? I am avoiding hard drive expansions on my pcs if possible hence why I purchased the NAS. All help is appreciated in advanced

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 2 lety +2

      Short answer if you're using Windows is definitely Synology Drive (though that's totally IMO). Synology Drive will allow you to choose which files to sync and keep locally. So you can keep them locally, update them, the changes will automatically be synced to your NAS, and when you're done, remove them from your PC and they'll be stored on your NAS only.
      If you're on Mac, there really isn't a difference because there isn't on-demand sync yet for Synology Drive. In general, if you don't want the files on your Mac, you'd have to use a network share regardless.
      Shouldn't be any different for the VMWare VMs as either option will work.

    Can you please share a batch command script or command to unmap and rempa synology NAS drive as network/shared drive. i would highly appreciate that if i get a quick response on my comment.

      Unfortunately, providing the commands won't be helpful as you'll have to alter them to your environment so it's best to try and understand exactly how to do it.
      Tons of great information online about it.

    Synology drive is as messy as other cloud services. SMB is way better in my opinion.
    I can’t stand all the synchronization.
