How I Troubleshoot an Air Conditioner Condenser Fan Motor

  • When I troubleshoot a condenser fan motor, I try to keep in mind that only a few things can really go wrong with them. Voltage from the panel isn’t sufficient, the contactor is bad, the capacitor is bad, or damaged parts inside the condenser fan motor.
In this video, I'll tell you about a few calls I've been on that I had to troubleshoot an air conditioner condenser fan motor. Making sure you have 240 volts to the motor is the first step when troubleshooting the fan motor. If you do, then you can go on to check the capacitor and the contactor. If voltage is getting to the condenser fan motor from there, then there may be some damaged parts inside the motor.
I’ve seen this happen when a big windstorm hit an area recently and knocked some branches down into the top of the AC. The shroud on top usually does a great job of protecting the fan blade, but in this instance, a stick wedged itself in there and caused the motor to burn out.
Another reason this can happen, especially on universal replacements is the inside of the motor got wet. These motors come with rubber plugs sometimes. These plugs have to be placed in the top side of a downward mounted condenser fan, and in the bottom of an upward-facing motor. The ports on the opposite sides should remain open, so that any moisture that does get into it, can drain out. Happens all the time!

First hot day of the year I fired up the AC and noticed the fan was not spinning and was running loud. I turn off the unit watched this video and had it working in no time. The was able to move the fan and add a little WD40. Blades were a bit stuck and running great now. Thank you!

I had a condenser fan motor stop working. Tried to spin the blade and it was very hard to spin so I ordered a new motor. When I took the old one off, out of curiosity I took it apart to see what was wrong. There really isn't anything to wear out other than the bearings/bushings, they don't have brushes. Turns out the bushing toward the fan blade side had dried up grease. I cleaned both bushings and the shaft and regreased it. It spun over super easy so I installed it back on. Tested the amps and it's pulling less than what's rated. It's been running great since then and I kept the new motor I ordered as a backup. I figure if it goes out again, I'll throw the new motor on while I fix the old one, maybe have to replace those bushings next time, or just pull it apart every couple years and regrease it.

This is a great video. If you have a fan motor that has a bunch of wires? It's probably a variable speed fan. If the motor says Price or TheDealerToolBox, it can be a controlled unit. If that's the case you can't ohm out the leads. They're all zero. On a unit that I have that is bad, the motor windings after I took it apart were fine. It turned out to be the controller unit that is in the top of the motor unit itself. Without special equipment I don't think it's possible to test it in the field. I replaced the capacitors, it still didn't run. I replaced the motor and it fired right up. This was a unit that the fan didn't spin up nor would it spin up after being pushed with a stick.
    Hope this helps someone.
BTW, be careful out there. After you pull the disconnect do yourself a favor and always, always, always take a volt meter and check leads and ground/bare metal. Sometimes the guy that wired the unit didn't do it correctly or something else in the house could cause voltage on one of the wires to ground. Always check.

Sometimes instead of the compressor overheating there is either an automatic or manual reset high head pressure switch that will open due to high head pressure caued by the failed fan motor. On the older Lennox HS 25 condensing units, they had a manual reset high pressure control. I love these as they provide the best protection for the compressor. When a high head pressure situation occurs, switch opens cutting off 24 volts to the compressor contactor coil.

Great video! I used this to rule out my condenser fan motor, after it wouldn't run even after replacing a bad capacitor. It was a 45/5 that decided it wants to identify as a 45/0. :)
Eventually I figured out that the control board feeds one leg of the fan, and it wasn't happy due to a high side lockout code left over from when the capacitor failed. Once I power cycled the breaker to my furnace to kill low voltage to the control board, it cleared the code and everything worked fine.

I did the capacitor check and found the one in the unit, 6 years old, was bad. It is a 50 +5 if. The 50 side checked bad. I ohmed out the condenser fan motor. 35/92 ohms respectively. I replaced the capacitor and the unit ran again. After one day, the fan would only hum, as it did originally, which was the reason for the service request to begin with. The replacement capacitor also showed the 50 uf was shot. I saw your video on capacitors and bought a good one with the eia456 number. Same humming today after only one cycling. Why the 50 side and is my fan motor bad? Thanks for your help and the great videos.

First, I'm very happy to have stumbled across your channel. I've researched far and hide on my AC unit. I've changed out the capacitor first, and still run into the same problem. The motor will run for 20-30 minutes, then it will stop, I think the thermo-protection kicks on, and stops the motor. If I try to kick start the fan when that happens, the blade has a lot of resistance. However, when I shut the power off, that resistance goes away. Short back story on the motor, about 8 months ago, I had to oil the motor as it would make noises, and the blade wasn't spinning at 100%. I feel at this point I just need to replace the motor. My question, as long as I match up all of the specs, an aftermarket would be just fine, right? Unfortunately, the OEM isn't available anywhere. Again, thanks for the insight.

Yes a universal is fine. If you want you can email me a pic to greg@foxfamilyhvac.net Main thing to remember is you have 850 and 1050 rpm motors. (close is fine, ex. 875 and 850 is close enough. They will all be 240v motors. Universal motors have wires you can use to change the fan direction. Other than that, close on the HP is fine too.

First time watching and this is very informative. Im a new tech and i have a condenser that trips the breaker panel in the house. How do I check the capacitor and compressor as well to see if theyre causing it to trip? Can the contactor cause it to trip?

  • @Alienspecies635
    @Alienspecies635 Před 2 lety +2

Before watching this I’ll tell you my steps. First I try to spin it and see if it’s seized up (if it is than you know it’s done) if it starts spinning it’s the capacitor next I check that there’s voltage to it and if there is I’ll check the capacitor to make sure it’s in full range (sometimes I’ll check the capacitor first whatever is more convenient) then depending if it’s a fan motor that’s still spinning I’ll check to see the amperage draw upon startup and running. If the fan spins and there’s voltage and a good capacitor I’ll make sure all the wiring is tight and properly wired with no cuts or scraps along the wires causing ground outs. Pretty basic routine for me.
Some cases are different than others depending on circumstances but this is usually how it goes.
99/100 times it’s not the contactor but it happens

  • @rickeykeeton4770

Do you check a Psc fan motor the same way you would an Econ motor for short to ground?
I have one that shows continuity from all 3 wires to fan housing.
One guy said it was normal since the motor had it is connected to a transformer. Unless the transformer is inside the motor housing, I see no transformer. All three wires are disconnected from where the go to terminals on contactor and capacitor.
Note fan does run but seems to get hot. It does not blow a breaker for the few minutes I let it run.
I do have to manually activate the contactor. Thinking I blew a fuse for the low voltage contactor winding.

I am having the same situation with my main HVAC unit. For some reason it keeps overheating and shuts off. It’s 100+F here outside during daytime. The tech stopped by and said it’s a faulty motor and replaced it as well as the capacitor. But it ran for 10 minutes before shutting down. Replaced it with a temporary second motor and it ran for another 15 minutes before shutting down again. Turned out it was also drawing too much current as well cuz it was too powerful motor I guess. I kept running the motor for 15 minutes and then took a break for another 30+ minutes and repeated the procedure until midnight. Then left it turned off until 5 AM. Now it’s running normally for almost an hour and a half. Once the temperature outside kicks in it might over heat and shut off again. What could be the problem here? New motor n capacitor. Still getting overheated. Acid washed the compartment filter aswell.
The motor cost $450. I don’t even know if it was really a bad motor or something else at this point. Any tips?

I also noticed the fan motor is mounted to very thin sheet metal which moves up and down when the fan is running and assumed that being a real reason for the vibration. I was told that the bearings in the fan may be worn, or wearing out. I didn't have the work done, and the vibration for some reason doesn't seem so bad anymore. Also make sure your filter is changed every 3 months, or so to prevent the fan from struggling.

One of my neighbors have a faulty air conditioning unit next to their house. They tried to get it fixed many times and nobody was able to fix it so far. It's making a huge grinding sound when it flips on and is also sounding like it's getting jammed then starting up again.

I just had a compressor not run and found the condenser fan to be locked but somehow prevented the compressor from running, not even a hum from the compressor, I'm sure it has to do with the capacitor(replaced during troubleshooting so both capacitors were good), anyone understand what was happening? I replaced the fan and everything worked fine after.

AC man has been out twice.
    PROBLEM
AC Thermostat says system is running and cooling.
Set at 72F, but house is 83.5F (here in Florida)
AC man comes, replaced fan motor and main board in the box on the Condenser unit.
    (so, it got an upgrade)
Several hours later he says it is working.
    AC man leaves.
We leave an hour later, and the house says it is 76F.
We come back the next day (15 hours later) and the house is 82.5F and the thermostat is set at 72F.
The Thermostat says it is running and cooling.
(two little snowflakes are blinking on the thermostat) as was the first time.
The thermostat says it is cooling the house.
We go outside and notice the condenser fan is not running again.
Shut off the AC and wait for 10 to 15 minutes.
Turn it back on and the condenser fan never come on.
We shut off the AC and file a Maintenance report again.
We leave after a few hours.
Before we leave, we turn the AC on again and see if the fan outside will come on. NOPE!
We check the breakers, and they are all on and not tripped.
We turn the AC back off.
AC man comes out the next morning.
Turns on the AC and the fan on the outside Condenser starts blowing.
He says to keep an eye on the float valve for the drip system.
He also says the thermostat might be bad.
    AC Man leaves.
A few hours later we leave, and the house is down to 76F.
We return about 12 hours later (the next day) and the house is 83.5F and the Thermostat is set to 72F.
Thermostat says the AC is cooling and the two little snowflakes are blinking.
We go outside and the fan on the Condenser Unit is not blowing again.
We start video recording and record for over 1.5 hours.
Fan outside on the Condenser Unit never comes on.
Checked the drip/pump box at the inside furnace/ac unit and it has about 1 inch of water inside it.
We know the fan is not coming on as we laid two leaves on the fan grate, and they are always in the same spot.
One on the edge of the outside of the grate.
One on the inside near the fan motor, on top of the grate.
We check the Breakers; they are still on and not hot or even warm at all.
We shut off the AC for 15 minutes, turn it back on, the fan outside at the Condenser doesn't come on.
We wait 5 minutes, the house is still not cooling, though the thermostat says it is.
Shows 83.5F and the setting is 72F, so I turn it down to 69F.
Wait a few minutes and the fan is still not coming on outside.
Switch from Auto to ON, still not fan coming on outside.
We turn the AC off and wait 20 minutes and repeat test.
No fan coming on outside and air blowing inside is not cold.
We stay testing for a total of 1.5 hours and the fan outside never comes on and the house is still 83.5F.
So if the AC stays off over night for 8 or 9 hours, it will turn on and run the next day. But at some point, (many hours [more than 3] later) it will stop cooling and the fan on the condenser shuts off and never turns back on.. for some reason.
Every time we left when the AC as running (after the AC man came) the fan outside was blowing.
Every time we come back many hours (12 to 15) hours later the house is hot, and the fan outside will not come back on.
On the second visit he said he checked the pressure on the AC Refrigerant and said it was checking out that it has enough.
After he left the first time, we did make sure the fins on the condenser are not clogged or blocked with leaves.
We purchased two Honeywell Thermostats ($45 and $59), one programmable and one not, one takes batteries and one not.
We also checked the inside AC Unit Filter, and it is clean.
    What we will try today.
We are going to use a camera to look in at the fins above the filter to make sure they are clean.
We will go outside and use a hose to wash the fins on the Condenser.
We will open the fan grate and vacuum out all the leaves on the bottom.
We will locate the outside drip pipe and vacuum it out.
We will add water to the condensation drip/pump box to see if the pump is actually pumping out the water.
If it is, we will add a cup of bleach water to it to flush the drip line and vacuum it again.
We expect the AC man will come out on Monday as this is Sunday.
We just rented this house and have not fully moved in yet as our current lease is up on July 27th.
We are still moving in, but not moving our bedrooms until the AC issue is resolved.
We already paid deposit, rent and prorated rent so we do not owe rent until August, and it is still late Jume.
We are not shutting off the AC (this time) as we know 100% for sure, if it is shut off overnight 8-9 hours, it works the next day, but only until it shuts off more than 3 hours later. Usually after the AC man leaves. My personal assumption is that the fan and main bard did not need to be replaced. Whatever the issue is, it is still the issue. This is because the AC worked while the Realtor was showing the house (12 noon - 2pm) for two hours and everyone left.
The AC was left on when we all left and when we got the Keys a few days later the house was in the 80's and the fan was not blowing outside at the Condenser. So, if the AC is only on for up to 3 hours, it works and sometime after that it stops cooling the house. If it is left off for 8-9 hours, it works. After more than 3 hours of being on again, (however long that is), it stops cooling, but the thermostat says it is cooling.
We understand we are responsible for regular filter change and making sure the drain drip line is clear and the fins on the condenser stay clean, but we have not even moved in yet and the AC is not working properly. We asked if we could put in window units or portable AC units (at our expense) until the AC issue is resolved, and they never answer Yes or No. They just say they are sending out a repairman, and it keeps being the same guy who cannot figure out what it is.

Maybe your HVAC guy replaced it with undersized motors, used ones off eBay or the junkyard, Chinese knockoffs? OEM gear is more expensive. It’s tempting to go cheaper but the headache of replacing it twice and scrambling to figure out a future problem will be worth the extra money.

Wake up!!! Jesus Christ is coming soon, don’t be left behind! That blood moon was the last warning, times up!
Choose this day whom you will serve!!!
    The Gospel
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:1-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” Romans‬ ‭3:19-26‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
