- BMW 5 Series e60/e61 How to replace Thrust / Tension / Control Arms RIDEX, AUTODOC
Hi everyone and welcome to another Bimmer Fixer video.
In this video I will show you how to change the Thrust Arms on your BMW e60/e61. They have several names and can be called Thrust arms, front upper control arms, Tension arms or just control arms but they are all the same I will put the part numbers below.
Signs and symptoms that they have failed is wired handling the car just doesn’t feel right on the road. You can also get a wobbled in the steering when braking at higher speeds and you can have a knocking sound coming from the front when driving or just parked but when you move the steering wheel.

And to think the BMW dealer here in the US (TX) wanted $2000 to do this. Lol. Thanks for the video. Going to do these when I get the BC coilovers.
@dcp4988 WOW! $2000! I'm pleased you're going to do it yourself 👍🏻
Great video, I didn’t know you needed jack the hub when changing the arm.
@Streets UK Thank you! Yeah if they are normal bushings you definitely need to but if you use polyurethane bushing you don't have too. 👍🏻
@@TheBimmerFixer it’s probably why the rubber dont last very long I’ve been tightening them up with the leg just hanging.. my bad lol
@Streets UK Yeah that would do it buddy. Not anymore now though 👍🏻
Well done.
I enjoy the noises of frustration, LOL, sounds like me. Good video
@JoseDeLeon1110 🤣🤣 thanks! 🤣🤣
Dont suppose anyone knows which arm is the most prevalent for wobbly braking from motorway speeds? The one in the video?
@flangewaffle Hi, could be a few other things too buddy. Have you checked the brake discs to see if they are warped and play in the steering rack?
Another cause could be bad CV Joint ( axle) just did a 2014 BMW 640i Xdrive Grand Coupe that had braking wobble and it was caused by bad axle. Normally i would say warped rotors which initially is what i thought but once i got everything apart I could see rotors were fine and noticed outer cv joint boot leaking so i knew that needed changed and by changing that it no longer has wobble when braking. Best thing to do is remove wheel and take a look at everything before just blind purchasing parts
Great video! did the ridex arms come with new bolts or did you have to buy them separately?
@joewilko2836 Thank you!! Yeah I had to get them separately. The arms are holding up well I haven't been easy on them and they are still going strong.
That’s good, I’ve heard mixed reviews, can you remember where you got the bolts from?
@joewilko2836 Yeah I have too. Wasn't sure if they were going to be any good. Got them from AutoDoc buddy.
Hi this is a nice and informative video👍.
Just have a question, i’m having a really loud knocking noise from the front end of the car when accelerating and i can also feel some vibration on the steering wheel on the highway with my e61. Is this control arm the cause of it? Cause i was planning to change the upper and lower control arms. Thanks in advance!
@jeromegabriel1256 Hi, thanks very much really appreciate it! I would say its a very strong chance its these control arm causing it. That sounds like what mine was doing before I changed them out. 👍🏻
@@TheBimmerFixer Thanks for your reply:) okay i’ll be changing them then. Just got some promo on autodoc with the Ridex kit aswell with the both front left & right lower & upper arms & tie rods & stabiliser links. I guess ridex must be okay since you also installed it on yours😅
@jeromegabriel1256 No problem! Oh wow that's awesome! Yeah mine have been good as gold I checked them out when I was last under the car and they looked fine and there was no excess play.
@@TheBimmerFixer Cheers! 👊
@jeromegabriel1256 👊🏻
How long did this take you? Im guessing 3-4 hours? Great video btw has given me confidence to crack on
@empty9091 Hi, yeah 3-4 hours didn't rush just took my time. Thank you so much! Glad it's helped you out I appreciate the feedback 👍🏻
@TheBimmerFixer Appreciate the video. I like to do my own work where I can. Just realised I haven't got new bolts so will hold out until next week. Might get sway bar bushes aswell while I'm there if I'm waiting, any recommendations? Thanks dude 👍🏻
@empty9091 Thats brilliant! Sway bar pushing are a great shout and straight forward to do. Not sure if you've seen my Sway Bar pushing video. I used polyurethane bushings from PSB and they are brilliant. Great customer service too.
@TheBimmerFixer Great stuff I'll check it out, just browsed your videos briefly I'll be checking them all out tomorrow when I'm a bit more awake lol loads of my annoying problems you've gone over 🙌 buzzing to get started
@empty9091 Thats amazing to hear! Thank you for showing so much interest in my channel I really hope my videos help you out. 👍🏻👍🏻
I’m curious about the quality of ridex rubber bushings. How long they will last. Hope its not a quality like Meyle those things are rubbish 😅
@Jonathan Slagter Yeah im definitely interested to see what they will be like after a bit of time and a few thousand miles. I know what you mean a good friend on mine had Meyle bushes and they completely failed with in 4 thousand miles they completely disintegrated I couldn't believe it!
@@TheBimmerFixer yeah its crazy no meyle for me. Hope ridex is a lil bit better. Only experience i have with ridex are brakes and wheel bearings on a ford focus mk2. But know I need to replace the controle arms on my e60. And wanted to buy the ridex but I will wait for your experience haha
@Jonathan Slagter haha 😄 I don't mind taking one for the team😂
@@TheBimmerFixer somebody has to do it.🤣 let us know after a while haha💪🏽
@Jonathan Slagter 🤣🤣 Yeah sure will do 👍🏻🤣
👍👍👍
Hi mate how are the ridex parts? Still going strong?
@specops1611 Hi mate, yeah no problems I'm quite impressed.
@@TheBimmerFixer nice still have to change mine so looked up the vid…..will order the ridex to then full set front and back 💪🏽
Is this the lower control arm my car failed mot on these today
@TrulyUniqueOne Ahh sorry to hear that! Are you going to change them yourself?
@@TheBimmerFixer yeh the arm you are fitting is that the lower arm? Are there only 2 arms at the front on an e60?
@TrulyUniqueOne Nice one 👍🏻 there are two on each side upper and lower the upper being the bigger of the two and the one's I change in the video. The lower are slightly smaller and lower down.
@@TheBimmerFixer OK cheers when chnging the lower ones do you have to load the suspension again?
@TrulyUniqueOne No problem, yeah thats correct 👌 👍🏻
Օկ, but what about alignment?
Was there a need to align the wheels?
@Project_88 I was expecting to but didn't need to in the end the tracking was still perfect after. 👌🏼
ridex probably last as long as the video
@liamsxa 😂 they seem to be doing ok at the moment but I am keeping a close eye them. Have you had trouble with them before?
@@TheBimmerFixer yeah only stuff I would buy is lemforder or oem
@liamsxa yeah thats understandable.
The correct torque setting is 100nm plus 90 degrees. Also car must be on its own weight when doing this.
@Bimmer Lad uk Yeah I agree, it was only because I couldn't get the torque rench on the nut so did it through the bolt head and added 10% I think I mentioned that in the video. Yeah again I agree but don't have ramps so thats why I jacked up the hub to the correct hight the wheels would be in on its own weight.
@ Bimmer Lad uk Did you actually watch the full video 😂😂 that's what the dude says! Great video Bimmer Fixer!
