The Four Stoic Virtues | Stoicism as The Art of Living
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 06. 2024
- This video focuses on the four stoic virtues: courage, justice, temperance, and wisdom. Stoicism is a philosophy most popularly associated with Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius.
The supreme goal being “living in agreement with nature”, allowing us to flow through life smoothly and with inner peace, flourishing as individuals and fulfilling our own human nature, achieving eudaimonia, commonly referred to as “happiness”, although a better translation would be “fulfilment”.
One of Stoicism’s main misconceptions is that it may seem cold-hearted or unemotional. This is simply not the case. In the beginning of Marcus’ Meditations, he spends a whole chapter reminding himself of the most important things about the most important people in his life, his family, and teachers.

Finally a video that shows that Stoicism isn't self-obsessed. Thank you.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
True, that's an unfortunate misconception!
But stoic phylospher pospulate the distinction of being isolated.
@@AbdulAzeez-hg2qfactually quite the opposite
Gratitude is das father of all virtues:
1. Wisdom
2. Courage
3. Justice
4. Moderation.
Therefore, when I wake up in de morning
I want to say to my self:
I am grateful and thankful for this glorious temple
that was given to me the day I am reborn;
my family, friends and teachers;
and another day to breath,
to think,
to love
and to enjoy.
"Don't seek for everything to happen as you wish it would, but rather wish that everything happens as it actually will-then your life will flow well."
- Epictetus
That's it. This is my philosophy.
A mayor part of mine as well! Thanks for watching :)
@@Eternalised It's also the core of mine, but even Seneca admitted "I’ll never be ashamed to quote a bad writer with a good saying." so I don't stop learning :)
welcome to nature
As a Christian, its just wildly beautiful how the key Stoic virtues are the same as the key Christian virtues. It's just beautiful how different ways of thought, or different ways of the "truth" being revealed (such as Christ becoming man) all point to the same - it makes me very happy as I am a practicing Catholic and a bug admirer of not only Aurelius but the other Stoics.
I truly appreciate the amount of work you've put in this content :) good job!
Thank you so much!!
Increíble filosofía del Estoicismo. Gran video. Gracias por los subtítulos en Español.
¡Muchísimas gracias! El placer es mío, un abrazo.
It has been a pleasure to bump into your twitter account and finding this video, and such a coincidence because I've been reading a book about Philosophy's history (from Jaime Luciano Balmes), and he clearly misunderstood the Stoicism; he defined the stoic as an emotionless, impassable and even boring person. This video is so enlightening and enjoyable !! Good vibes
Thank you so much Martin, glad you liked this video! Wow, I have seen it as well! It is so true, I've been reading some white papers in Spanish and they often attribute Stoic to "emotionless" or "lack of empathy". Thanks for the comment :)
Wow, I just love your writing. So rich and it just flows! Pleasure to learn from you!
Thanks a lot! Appreciate the kind words, I'm sure I'll learn a lot from your channel as well.
Fantastic video, very well made. Thanks for this!
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it!
Really great video! I love how well you summarized it
Thanks a lot Jonah!!
Great video! very nice summary on the four stoic virtues
Thanks so much, really value your words
감사합니다.
Love the variety of this channel! Great video
Thanks so much!
Thank you
Love see more videos on this school of philosophy.
Very good, thanks 🙏
Stoicism has a lot in common with Buddhism in their way of making sense of the “art of living.”
Brilliant video. Beautifully presented. I loved the way you included stories to illustrate the ideas. Very inspiring video , made me more admiring of the Stoics. Id love to see more videos on Stoicism. What about looking at stoicism in relation to modern society where its experienced a revival in recent decades.
How can one obtain the transcript for the temperance part of the video? It’s beautifully put forward.
I imagine it might be more associated with Chrysippus had all his writings survived. Also I believe the 4 virtues date back to, at least, Socrates. Perhaps the pre-Socratics also had these concepts?
I found this video hard to follow at times perhaps due to it’s rambling nature. Appreciate it nonetheless.
8:00 Lazy masquerade!
My guyssse
Good video. Take a like :)
Thanks a lot!! :)
Would it be rude to ask where you're from? I'm British and I just can't place your accent and it bugs me!
Sure, it is unusual! I was born in a Scandinavian country, lived in an Asian country, residing in a Mediterranean country.
@@Eternalised Ahhh fascinating, that scratches my itch then! Thanks, hah!
Great job on your content by the way, stumbled across it while getting no sleep with the baby
@@godsgrannie Thanks a lot Richard, means a lot! :) Hope you and your baby find peace!
stoicism is suicide without suicide, every vice within stoicism i like , however it seems to try to ultimately boil to a point of nirvana, or god, or the idea of conformity and hence death. i could be very wrong as ive never been able to meet a stoic and debate this. if someone would like to id be very grateful. i think im under the impression that who is a stoic to claim what nature is ? y definition seems to be polarising to theres
Simply discipline the mind and do what must be done. Calm and self controlled. Be virtuous
