Mishmi Takin get their name from Mishmi tribe who have inhabited "the hills" for centuries if not millenia. They are a very interesting tribe and living embodiment of Bengal tigers living in high Himalayas (which scientist only recorded in early 2010s). Takin and Goral make up a lot of the diet of these high-altitude tigers (who are although Bengal but look like Amurs). In Arunachal Pradesh, these tigers have been camera-trapped at 3700 metres altitude which is outer limit of the tree-line. In neighbourung Bhutan camera traps showed a tiger at 4600 metres!!!

As a past volunteer and employee of the Lincoln Park Zoo, I was blessed by being able to visit the takin whenever. They became one of my two favorite LPZ animals along with the snow leopards. Feel a bit stressed? Need a peaceful break? Visit with takin. Totally zen! There were babies too and they just loved butting heads in play. They are a real “WOW”!

The Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is the only extant species of the genus Budorcas, surprisingly, its closest living relative is the Muskox (Ovibos moschatus), they are both the only surviving species of the tribe Ovibovini, which is one of three tribes that now belong to the subfamily Ovibovinae, the others being the tribes Hemitragini (Tahrs) and Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat), Ovibovinae is a subfamily of bovids that lives mostly in cold-climate habitats, there are three major tribes within the subfamily Ovibovinae, which are Hemitragini (Tahrs (contains 3 genera: Arabitragus, Nilgiritragus, and Hemitragus)), Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat (divided into two subtribes: Naemorhedina (Gorals and Serows (contains 2 genera: Capricornis and Naemorhedus)) and Rupicaprina (Chamoises and Mountain Goat (contains 2 genera: Rupicapra and Oreamnos))), and Ovibovini (Muskox and Takin (contains 2 genera: Budorcas and Ovibos)), Ovibovinae is hinted to be most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeest, Wildebeests, Hirola, and Tsessebees) based on similar characteristics to both subfamilies.
