"animals" turned me from a casual fan (mostly stuff i heard on the radio from "dark side" and "wish you were here") into an obsessed one. in may 1977 my friend called me and said, "pink floyd are playing at the stadium tonight. we should go". that night changed my life. the next day i went out and bought "animals" and throughout that summer i bought the entire back catalog, immersing myself in their music. by the time i went back to school in september for my sophomore year i was a different person. gone was the pop music fan,and my outlook on music (and the world) changed forever.

Haha, Pink Floyd has enough patience for all of us! Watching you two reminds me of me and my wife 35 years ago. My wife was not nearly as big a fan of Pink Floyd as I was, but I thought I would try to get her to love Pink Floyd as much as I did! I even took her to two of their concerts, (one was The Wall in 1980).
My wife went along enthusiastically, listening to CDs, (that I would play for her), going to the concerts, buying Pink Floyd T shirts and other PF stuff. She is wonderful, she was smiling the whole time,.... but it was painfully obvious to me, that she was doing it, not because she was blown away by the incredible music, but because she loved me! LOL!
Looks similar to what I'm seeing here in your reaction, except we have American accents instead of English accents!
So today I'm 65 and watching you folks doing this reaction,.... and it gave me a smile thinking back to better times. Thank you for that.

I saw them do this live in 1977 during their "In the Flesh" tour in Phoenix Arizona I think it was sometime in February! They played all of "Animals" then all of "Wish You Were Here" and did half of "Dark Side of The Moon" for their encore! I've seen at least a hundred concerts in my lifetime from AC DC to Zeppelin and everyone in between alphabetically. Pink Floyd is the only group where my wife and I wouldn't be able to talk all the way home!! We were especially speechless after that in the flesh concert, spectacular!!! I like 'Dogs,' but I especially enjoy watching Pink Floyd (and David Gilmour solo) live. Their concerts were spectacular, with the laser light shows and the musicianship is amazing, as always. I might suggest reacting to something from the Pulse concert ('Comfortably Numb', 'Sorrow', or 'Keep Talking'). Or, from the 'Delicate Sound of Thunder' tour, 'On the Turning Away.' Maybe the immediacy of a live show would make it more accessible?

I appreciate Rachel's point of view - Pink Floyd isn't everyone's cup of tea. I can see how the song could be seen as a long one for a novice listener. Always cool to see the reaction of a first time listener to a song I have heard over 40 years now.

Bonjour, I'm a prog rock fan from Montréal....I've just look your reactions video that was very interesting...natural and funny...I have read some of the comments and I agree with the ones that suggest you to listen Comfortably Numb from the live concert Pulse (I would think that it could convinced Rachel...maybe)...it's an extraordinary live performance and the solo is even better than the studio version...and you have that visual experience of the Pink Floyd concerts....of course it's a late show in the Pink Floyd history (1994) so it's not the basic Pink Floyd...Waters is not there (but Gilmour, Mason and Wright are there) and they have some good musicians with them....even if you don't make a video out of it, have a look it really worth it.

I've seen a couple of Roger Waters live shows and as dark as a lot of the material is, it's always struck me the sense of cheekiness he conveys during portions of the live performances, often in places where you least expect it. The little poker game routine during the darkest most atmospheric portion of 'Dogs' being a prime example. He hams it up pretty good as well during the Wall tour as he's putting on the fascist dictator garb. Go figure. 😏

David Gilmour can play a single note and have it sound sublime and grandiose; this is his greatest skill!! As far as vocals... he does exactly what the song needs; nothing more nor less!! Overall? It's never been about how phenomenal he is... it's been ALL about how tastefully he uses his voice, guitar effects, string bending techniques, finesse and style!! Is he the greatest guitarist ever? No. He however takes you on a journey with him, the song and his guitar!! Pink Floyd & Gilmour are The G.O.A.T.
Pink Floyd was formed in 1965... their (most likely) last album was "The Endless River" in 2014. PF had 15 studio albums... 3 live albums, 9 compilation albums not to mention multiple live dvds and solo albums performed by below members of the band.
Syd Barrett (short-lived founder; guitar plus) the originator and quirky eccentric; inevitably the consequential muse. * January 6, 1946 (rip 2006)
Roger Waters (bass) was the cultivator (seed sower), the lyrically conceptual prodigy, secondary vocal and co-maestro of songwriting * September 6, 1943 (age 78 years)
David Gilmour (guitar) was the placidity, guitar virtuoso, the silky smooth voice and co-maestro; the equilibrium. * March 6, 1946 (age 75 years)
Richard Wright (keyboards) was the essential underlying symmetry; musical nurturer. Occasional singer. * July 28, 1943 (rip 2008)
Nick Mason (drums) was the heartbeat, structure and foundation; the sole member involved from the emergence of PF to the last recording. * January 27, 1944 (age 77 years)
FYI: The following Pink Floyd albums are Concept Albums (all songs together tell a complete story)... Dark Side Of The Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). The Final Cut (1983) is ify, as it was the last album with Roger Waters being in the band - leaving in 1985. *search on Wiki the album title to get the story behind the concept.
I myself suggest the following EPIC 10 live songs; the studio and "Brit Floyd" versions are phenomenal as well!! : 1) "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" 2) "Hey You" 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" 6) "Dogs" 7) "Sorrow" 8) "Pigs (3 different ones)" 9) "Welcome To The Machine" 10) "The Great Gig In The Sky" 11+) There's so many... !!
Fun Fact: "You don't need drugs to enjoy Pink Floyd but you definitely need Pink Floyd to enjoy your drink and drugs!!"
If you like Pink Floyd as much as it seems, sadly there is only ONE WAY you're going to see their music "live" in concert (2021+) other than an older dvd (or maybe Waters or Gilmour solo in concert; they're getting old my friend)... more importantly hearing the songs done exacting to the studio albums adding a very good example of the "live" light show... you may wanna check out the following group that's IMO far better than a tribute band!! The subsequent track is superbly performed by the tribute band "Brit Floyd" ~ Gilmour, Mason and Wright have said, "If they themselves wanted to see PF live, the only way that could ever happen is go see these guys." czcams.com/video/RnHu3D8stGE/video.html (one song from an entire 155 minute concert of PF Bliss; see comment at link for other tracks)
Final Note: Pink Floyd have left us the embodiment of their musical journey to share, enjoy and reflect upon. * always listen to Pink Floyd with headphones or an awesome sounding music system.

    = = = == === = ====== = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Roger Waters (Bassist; he left PF in 1985) and Friends did a live concert of the entire "Wall" double album in Germany (1990) right after the wall came down; very historic!! The stage was at least a block or more long... czcams.com/video/ohrFzuuUyi0/video.html

DEAR RACHEL: All I have to say is, on behalf of the global Pink Floyd fan community, I'm sorry that D has subjected you to one of the hardest-to-listen tracks of the better part of Pink Floyd's discography. Not because it's musically difficult -although it does have some musical interest- but because it's dark, somber, grim, gloomy, and it almost depletes you from any hope you had left for humankind. Making someone listen to it is not something you do to someone you presumably love. Rachel, you did well, stoically, and demonstrating interest and bravery, so thank you for that.
DEAR D: I get you, I get Pink Floyd, I know all the lyrics, the little inflections of Gilmour's guitar, and every smirk and turn of phrase by Roger Waters. But I also think that it's probably too much of a good thing for most people if it's not administered in the right amount. The right dose, however, may be more helpful to create a welcoming experience for Rachel, instead of making her want to run away to grab tea. Or a shotgun.

Hi Dee and Rachel, greetings from the Netherlands. I enjoyed your reaction. Watching this, it made me wonder if you've ever listened to Nightwish? They are a symphonic metal band from Finland. Back in 2005 they recorded a tribute to Pink Floyd’s ‘High Hopes’, sung by their bass player. It is awesome and checking it out is worth it. czcams.com/video/IClqCyS4IRY/video.html
Nightwish's 3rd and current singer is the Dutch Floor Jansen. Floor has one of the best female voices in metal today. Nightwish songs are very diverse. There are epic and melodic songs, but there are also quite heavy ones and the next song could be very folky or even jazzy…. Their live performances are EPIC. If you want to hear an official Nightwish song with Floor’s vocals, listen to Ghost Love Score, recorded at Wacken 2013, in front of 82 000 people. Give it a try, you might be surprised… czcams.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/video.html
