The Kid Sheleen role that Lee Marvin won his Best Actor Oscar for in 1965, was originally offered to Kirk Douglas, who turned it down, presumably because of its self deprecating elements, however, it was a perfect fit for Marvin, who had never parodied his menacing roles in films like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Comancheros and the Budd Boetticher westerns that he appeared in during the 50s. The conventional wisdom at the time suggested that Rod Steiger would win for The Pawnbroker; fortunately, he would win in 1968 for his role in In The Heat Of The Night.

I believe that Lee Marvin was sitting with Robert Aldrich, who directed him in The Dirty Dozen and Emperor Of The North. Ironically, the drunken gunslinger role that won Marvin his only Oscar was turned down by Kirk Douglas. Marvin had been portraying menacing characters for 15 years in a variety of films, including Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Steiger gave one of his best and most restrained performances in The Pawnbroker, but he won two years later for Heat Of The Night.

He was my mothers favourite actor - therefore my forenames are Lee Martin (my Dad, god bless him, drew the line at Marvin). He was, though, a hell of an actor. I am not a great fan of musicals BUT "Paint Your Wagon" is a must watch. LEE IS BRILLIANT

As a huge Lee Marvin fan, I have no problem with him getting the award. He had a stellar career. But Rod Steiger in The Pawnbroker would've been my choice. Moreover, I thought that Paul Newman should've won in '68 for Cool Hand Luke, over Steiger for In the Heat of the Night. Great film, but I thought that both Steiger and Poitier were as good as each other with similar screen time. But Newman was the singular lead in Luke and more deserving. Imho.😢

Lee Marvin was excellent in the second half of the movie but Rod Steiger was unbelievable in the pawnbroker. Nevertheless there were Oscar winner who act less good than Lee Marvin.

Before Cat Ballou Lee Marvin had given a number of memorable performances none of which had received even an Oscar nomination. Perhaps the Academy had this in mind when they gave him the Oscar for Cat Ballou.

I reiterate: Lee Marvin deserved this Oscar. The other nominees were overly dramatic and seemed a bit pretentious. But Lee gave a rip-roaring, fun, entertaining performance in a tricky double role. Plus, "" made a ton of money while the other actor's films made next to no money e.g., Oscar Werner, was nominated for "Ship of Fools", in which Lee Marvin also starred (!), and "Cat Ballou" made more than six times the money of "Ship of Fools" . The other films [Pawnbroker; The Spy Who Came in from the Cold; Othello] made little money. But "Cat Ballou" was both a big financial hit and Lee was a big hit with audiences. Sometimes an actor who really knows how to entertain should be duly recognized.

Box-office does not always correlate to quality. I agree Marvin did great with a dual role, but I don't think money should really factor into it as much as you say. I think this win is similar to Marisa Tomei's for "My Cousin Vinny" in that it stood out because it was different than the others and voters liked the actor. Marvin was also being rewarded for going "against type" in a comedy after years of serious roles. There are many factors involved in who ultimately wins an Oscar.
