    Common misconception that a "shy" person doesnt have a strong personality. People often use shy to describe introverts and trust me introverts have strong personalities, are generally independent and dont need validation from others and can be extremely outspoken. Dont let the "shy" fool you.

    Adrienne was right in that parents have to learn to work with their child's natural personality and nurture it. A child may not know everything but they do know themselves because that's all they know. They live in their bodies and with their own thoughts 24/7. When a parent tries to "correct" a child's personality all they do is sow seeds of self doubt and shame. "I like this shirt, but mom says it's horrible and everyone will hate it. I have to pretend to not like it, I have to hide myself from everyone." It's ripples throughout your entire life and so many parents don't even realize they're doing it.

      That's something my mom used to say. She would say, as parents we can rear you, teach you, instill the tools/values, but at the end of the day you have your own mind. And you're right, that's a mistake parents make. Thinking their children are them, so they rear them in the same way. And they're not you mom and dad. So it's definitely important to understand your child's patterns, habits, behaviors, and most of all listen to them. Don't always shut them up or shut them down. It's important to listen to them too. I didn't say don't discipline them or correct their bad behavior, but definitely try understanding each other. Adults can learn a lot from their children.

    I applauded👏🏾👏🏾 Adrienne's contribution on the personality topic particularly the part where she highlighted the role that parents/guardians have to play in nurturing and guiding the natural personalities of kids instead of breaking their natural-born spirits. I know of people who're still figuring out what their traits are as old as they are due to the fact that their natural spirits were broken either through ignorance of the parents or a trauma suffered during the formative years. Parenting requires wisdom; and it's my prayer that the Almighty God blesses parents with divine wisdom🙏🏾

    It's really both. As someone who got an undergraduate degree in Psychology and has heard about this debate over and over again, I honestly don't see how it's a debate. You literally can't say it's one or the other because it's both. Like Adrienne said, there are things you are born with, but the environment you are raised in will either suppress or enrich those innate traits and/or abilities. It's the same with some mental health disorders. You could be born to be more likely to develop depression or anxiety due to a family history, but your environment will determine whether that lies dormant or not.

    0:47 Exactly Garcelle! That was me as a child and who I am now DECADES later.🤣 The people that view those with strong personalities 99.9% of the time are people lacking in self esteem and confidence.
    It has been my experience (I've actually did this as proof to certain friends) when I water down my personality ie: act shy, don't assert myself, hold back my opinions, etc) people love me! insecure people love me. Then when I return to my real self, I get a lot of "Who does Belinda think she is?"
    I think we are a combination of nature and nurture. I was raised in a household with 10 strong minded siblings and a father (who was a Pastor) that told us constantly we are special, loved and leaders. It would have been hard to grow up insecure in those surroundings.

    What Loni said applies to me. I always say I was definitely molded into the strong personality that I am. My nature is VERY soft, I can’t even lie. My mom taught me to stand up for myself and not let anyone treat me any sort of way. If it wasn’t for her and me growing up in the area that I did and growing up around the people that I did where I had no choice but to stick up for myself, I’d be an extremely soft guy. Honestly, I still am but I have another side that people are very shocked by when they see it. For me, my strong personality definitely came from nurture but I’m still a very soft, kind, peaceful person which is my nature. I’m really happy to have both sides because they have both helped me in major ways

  • @NaNa-wy2tk
    @NaNa-wy2tk Před 2 lety +4

    I believe it's both,
    Though sometimes nurture/upbringing depending how drastic, could have a bigger effect on the personality like childhood trauma can play a bigger role. Anyone know about the enneagram? it does a fantastic job explaining the different ways an upbringing shaped our personalities.
    These are few examples (there's a total of 9 MAIN types)
    "Type 1: REFORMER- These children felt criticized, and/or Household rules may have felt inconsistent. As such, they became obsessed with being good/not making mistakes to avoid condemnation. The principal message was: “You must always be better than you are.”
    Type 3: ACHIEVER- These children felt rewarded only for what they did and how well they did it. Their feelings were discounted and ignored, only what was expected of them mattered. Admiration replaced real love.
    Type 7: ENTHUSIAST- These children were deprived of nurturing too soon. They handled this lack by searching for distractions to minimize/repress fear and pain. They decided to focus on positive options and rely on themselves to fulfill their desires and gain a sense of nurturance.
    Type 8: CHALLENGER- These children often grew up in an unsafe environment (Emotionally and/or Physically) and had to mature way too soon. They didn’t feel safe to show any vulnerability and may have felt controlled. Weakness was used against them, so they focused only on building their strength.
    Type 9: PEACEMAKER- These children were overlooked or were neglected and felt unimportant or “lost.” They were ignored for having needs or expressing themselves (especially anger) and decided to keep a low profile and instead focus on the needs/experience of others."

  • @christopherwilson868
    @christopherwilson868 Před 2 lety

    Adrienne spoke the truth. The parent must nurture the child's personality and not let them become disruptive to others. Also parents need to guide their kinds into who they're suppose to be, not who the parents woman them to be. Stop pressuring your kids with all your expectations of them. Just let them grow and be there to help them!

  • @DatVideoDoe
    @DatVideoDoe Před 2 lety +5

    I think that it’s a mix of the two. I think, for the most part, we are predisposed to interacting a certain way with others IE born with our personality but that the way people around us in our formative years interact and react to those predisposition can either deter or cement them into our actual personality once we’re more independent. Like, I think it’s essentially formed by the time you’re in kindergarten. Which is why it’s so important to have infants and toddlers interact with others their age (very worried about all these COVID babies and toddlers that missed out on those formative interactions)

And it was interesting and fun to see how it correlated to the lesson plan and to our real lives ! And some of our personality is innate as it is soemthing that is within our DNA and we get from our parents naturally… it carries over not only in our physical genes but our personality as well ! Then we have our personality that we get when it comes to what we see around us and we gravitate and take on things whether it’s our friends or family and it’s apart of character growth ! Read the book "Quiet" by Susan Cain. She talks all about introverts and how society views extroverts as better, which is what they are doing here. Being loud and obnoxious isn't better and there are benefits to being quiet, soft-spoken, a thinker, and an introvert which she explains in the book. In contrast, especially in the US, extroverts are seen as stronger, more charismatic, leaders, which was a shift in "character" vs "personality" culture. Now that being an introvert has been popularized, all of a sudden everyone wants to label themselves as an introvert. Funny enough both Jeannie and Adrienne have claim to be introverts when they have all of the traits of an extrovert, and Adrienne just said them here. lol. The answers to such a question is always gonna be a mixed bag. Basically, no cause of anything in reality is due "this *or* the other". It's factors.
    It can be argued that females and males who sexually offend adolescents for example are born with such a drive, but it could have also been caused by how they were mistreated as kids in a variety of ways that stopped them from realizing they should never do such a thing.
    Many of us seem to be born to be able to love each other unconditionally as a species, but a variety of factors can either suppress that innate side of us, or emphasize our care towards others and ourselves.
    The moral of the story is: Ya get what ya got cause ya either got-got or ya get good while the gettin's good.

    Something is wrong with the title because "innate" means "born with". Anyway! I think that we are born with some of our personality traits. However, our life experiences, people we meet etc activate or deactivate these traits. Some of our traits may never activate because we've yet to experience their triggers.

    I actually think strong personalities can be negative at times. Right? Cuz very few personalities are 100% alright all the time. Some strong personalities are pushy, dominating, etc.

    Oh sure,some strong personality traits may play out negatively for example if someone felt like they don't need attention often, so then they're fine with non frequent communication...
    In some ways, strong personality traits can undermine others, if applied wrongly.

    *Silly title, innate **_means_** inborn.* 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️
    That fact established, nature (🧬) and nurture (environment & experience) both factor in.
    Brain disease, disorder, or injury also changes one's personality. (S/O to those of us who studied Phineas Gage.)
    Recently, scientists are reporting that Long Covid can also affect/even *change* one's personality. Virus does significantly affect the whole being (🧠 and body), so- if true- that doesn't shock me.

    i feel like they missed the point with this topic. strong personalities have their pros and cons. not a lot of people like or can deal with a strong personality especially when it's a woman who has the strong personality - she has more difficulties navigating intimate relationships and sometimes even in the workforce. like adrienne said, it is both innate but also affected by experiences and the environment. maybe the child had no other choice but to be strong whilst growing up depending on their circumstances.

    I disagree with the definition that Loni read. I have a sibling with a strong personality and she is like a bull and it turns everyone off. She is controlling, obnoxious and rude. I think we need to call it an assertive personality. You can be assertive and yet be kind, respectful but at the same time stick up for yourself. I think nature can affect your personality both positively and negatively. It can make you more assertive or more inward. Your experiences in life really can affect your psyche. Bullying as a child made me question my worth but it also made me fight back and stick up for myself. I think though you are born with a foundation to build on.
