PASTOR TODD SMITH | SPEAKING IN TONGUES - "FLIP THE SWITCH"

  • Pastor Todd Smith discusses the importance of speaking in tongues and its role in prayer. He emphasizes the need for believers to transition from praying in their native language to praying in tongues, tapping into the spirit realm. Pastor Smith underscores the value of persistent and watchful prayer, asserting that the church should engage in fervent spiritual battles through prayer to achieve desired outcomes. He highlights the distinction between praying with understanding and praying in tongues, asserting that the latter enables believers to communicate directly with God, speaking mysteries and bypassing their limited human comprehension.

Pastor Todd really teaches on this subject well. The gift of tongues can be confusing because it is nuanced. Praying in tongues is different than tongues with interpretation in a group setting. They have different purposes. Praying in tongues is for everyone.

Where does it say in the Bible to pray in tongues in your private prayer time? I’m being honest I really thought his sermon was a joke and not biblical what so every. He even missed quoted Paul in 1 cor 14. I wanted to listen to a pastor who believes in speaking in tongues to see there view point. If anything his sermon made me feel like he is misleading people. This why I left the charismatic movement they mislead people way to often. You know why people speak in tongues because it makes them feel like they had a spiritual breakthrough.

@@travisrosenthal398 13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider[b] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Read the whole passage this is probably with the charismatic movement you disregard Paul warning on speaking in tongues. When I walk in a charismatic church there is no Oder I see tons of people all praying in a fake language that no can understand which does not build up the church. Paul also calls for Oder within the church
1 cor 14:40 But all things should be done decently and in order.
Also in acts 2 the day pentecost they began speaking in other languages which the people outside could understand.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
Look at the end of the day people want to pray in a fake language and not use there minds that’s up to them. I will take Paul warning saying use my words and mind. Also why does Paul say that speaking in tongues is for non-believers? I will point you back to Acts 2 the people understood because they were speaking there language.
I see a lot of disorder and confusion when in comes to the charismatic movement.
Also do you believe women should not be able to speak in the church? Because in the same passage Paul says.
1 cor 14:34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
Or maybe something’s were meant for then and not now. What if speaking in tongues and the gifts of the spirit were for the church in the beginning. Just like that verse on women in the church was for them and not now. See I believe because we have the word of God and the first church did not. So all we need is the word of God, prayer, and the gift of faith. We as Christians need to do better. Only in christianity there are 30,000 different tables that we come to for the Lord supper. Because most Christians don’t read the word of God and study it to the core to understand the will of God in our lives. That’s why the charismatic movement needs worship speaking in tongues because the word of God it’s just not enough for them. They need there feelings inoder to stay connected to God because living a righteous life and being grounded in scripture is much too hard. It’s easier to create a fake language and sing a Hillsong.
And no it does not say you should pray in tongues in privately read the whole passage

I understand why people chose not to come to Jesus we the church are that reason. Keep living in feelings because I don’t think you believing in tongues will keep you from Jesus. It might keep others if we the church don’t come back to on table. It’s sad that you disregard everything else that Paul talks about. Like his warning about speaking in tongues

Wow read the Bible in context, speaking in tongues is real just not how you and this movement believe. Now where in the Bible does it say that we should pray in tongues in private. Truly study the Bible and the Jewish culture to better understand the context. I would also challenge you to listen to people who disagree. You might not want to do that because people that speak in tongues it makes them feel like they are having a break through. Todd took this way out of context including misquoting Paul in 1 cor 14, not trying to attack but I was a pastor in this movement and I at one time and spoke in tongues. And it took me a longtime for my eyes to open. The charismatic movement takes the gifts of the spirit way out of contexts. Special prophecy, speaking in tongues, God is not still adding to the Bible. We have God word now and we have the truth in our hands to measure what pastors are teaching us. If anything Paul warns people about speaking in tongues, Paul corrected the church about this if anything.

In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will.

We can have utterances and it is not clear . He is right in some people's languages and sounds like duck quacking.
We have known men speaking in tongues of French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Portuguese. People have heard that their language is being spoken and they understand,, because of their native language. Evangelist R.W. Shambach said he had that experience of five people coming and said you spoke in the finest dialect in our language. He said I didn't speak that because I don't know your languages. God the Holy spirit spoke to five people in their language.

I'm not sure about the "filliping of a switch". I think, when you are humbled before the Lord in earnest prayer, with the burden increasing, He, The Spirit, gives you the tongue. It is the spirit that gives gifts to the body as He sees fit. I've often had a prophet word, given it out, felt so shaken by the Spirit as it comes out and then it stops and that's when I get the gift of tongues, which I speak quietly to myself to calm myself down. The people around would hear it, but I feel it is His gift to reassure me of my obedience. I've never, ever flipped any switch on. But, I have been desiring in prayer to go deeper. I could, if asked, try and repeat what I think I heard in my tongue, but I don't think that would be genuine and would be sin.

    1. Petion (wants and desires)
    2. Prayers of Faith (to change things)
    3. Prayer of submission
    3. Tongues
    4. Intercession
    5. Suplication
    6. Praise and worship (highest type of prayer)
All have different rules. “If it be your will” doesn’t work for all prayers. Also, prayer is simply communication with your Father and you can walk in a state of prayer constantly. Every single day!

That is the gift of tongues that has interpretation. This is praying in tongues that is different. He explains using scripture. It is not something we are convinced of intellectually but from Gods Holy Spirit when God reveals it to us. We stop doubting it when we can feel when it is real and not real. We get to know the Holy Spirit and recognize with our hearts and souls first then the mind follows. We have to humble ourselves in our worship to stop worrying what others will think if we should utter the tongues we are compelled to do when the words of love are no longer enough in our prayers.

The way Satan teaches people to get around this is the Doctrine of the Trinity. They say when you are born again you get the Holy Spirit for their god is one and Tongues are a known language. The Bible states that when we are born again that we receive Jesus Spirit. Acts 2:38. Then when one receives the Spirit of the Father, you speak in an unknown language as evidence of receiving the Fathers Spirit. My Father in Heaven is love and has always been love. So, if there is evil, punishment, bad deeds and other stealing, killing and destroying (none of these are love) it is from Satan. Did the god of the OT demonstrate love or evil. John 10:10

There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - and there is only one type - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned).
In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with.
It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any disallowed sound combinations, i.e. consonant clusters, in the speaker’s native language are also disallowed in his/her tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically.
Occasionally some speakers will use two or more subsets of phonemes to generate glossolalia, producing what, to them, sounds like two (or more) distinct “tongues languages”, thus claiming to be able to speak in “divers tongues”.
There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms.
Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. _Nowhere in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced._
“Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will.

I'm not doubting or questioning the 'tongues experience'; glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the divine." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any_ other culture that practices glossolalia. Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it, and where it comes from.
‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God given ability effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers.

I appreciate your effort and study, but unfortunately, your deciding to go against what the first century church taught about tongues. It also goes against the theme of tongues in scripture. Where Paul literally says it comes from your spirit, not your mind, and it only happened when you are empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Great resource to look into would be “The Language of Heaven” by Sam Storms.

      He's hinging a bit on 1 Cor. 14:2....
1Cor. 14:2 is perhaps *the* quintessential verse used by many to “evidence” modern tongues-speech in the Bible.
Let’s paraphrase this verse into a more modern English.
To do this, you need to get rid of the added “unknown”, use a more accurate translation from the Greek, and a more modern rendering of the archaic “tongue” -
Once done, we have something more like this -
“He that speaks in a language isn’t speaking to others, but only to God; no one hears [him] with understanding; nevertheless, though he’s praying in the Spirit, he’s speaking mysteries.”
The whole passage is talking about real, rational language.
Let me use an analogy - If I attend a worship service in “East Haystack”, some remote town in the US out in the middle of nowhere, two things are going to be evident: one; there’s only going to be so many people at that service (i.e. there will be a finite given amount of people there) and two; the chances that anyone speaks anything *but* English is pretty slim to nil.
If I start praying aloud in say Lithuanian, there’s no one at that service that’s going to understand a single word I’m saying. Even though I’m speaking a real language, no one _there_ will understand my “tongue”. That does not mean or imply that no one else understands Lithuanian; just no one at _that particular service._
In this sense, therefore, I am speaking _only to God,_ since he understands all languages. To everyone at the service, even though I’m praying in the Spirit (as defined in my original post), to the people listening to me, I’m still speaking “mysteries” - i.e. even though I’m praying as I ought, no one understands me; no one has a clue what I’m saying as no one speaks my language.
When one looks at the original Greek, the verb which is usually translated as “understandeth/understands” is actually the verb “to hear” in the sense of understanding what you’re hearing someone say. The verb is *not* “to understand”. That part of the verse is more properly “no one hears [him] with understanding”, i.e. no one listening to him understands what he’s saying.
There is _nothing_ in this passage that suggests modern tongues-speech nor is there anything that even _remotely_ suggests that the speaker does not understand what he himself is saying. The Greek bears this out; it is the _listeners_ who do not understand, *not* the speaker - no matter how hard modern tongues-speakers want the speaker to also not understand…….it just isn’t there.
The "tongues" this guy is speaking is textbook glossolalia.

Great answer I completely agree with you, some people need to feel like they are having a spiritual breakthrough. Because reading the Bible and living a righteous life is much harder. So that’s why this movement is growing because people need worship music and speaking in tongues instead of the word of God. Thank you for putting these thoughts together. Also i challenge people to listen to pastors who have a different view or in my opinion the correct view.

The answer is no. Sermon debunked with one verse.
