I confess I was most interested to see how you'd take on the challenge of Scanlan, a bard himself. A limerick rhyme scheme in a Mediterranean rhythm is not something I could have ever guessed at, yet somehow it's spot on. Automatically calls to mind lotharios and Romance languages and feels like something a classic entertainer would sing for a dinner or street audience. How are you always so perfect.

This is your most complicated song in lyrics, cadence, rhythm, and melody. It is easy listening, but if someone actually attempted to play it, they'd see it was kinda in a bunch of keys with all of its borrowed chords, has a Spanish strum pattern, with an unusual rhyme scheme and sophisticated vocabulary and themes.
Basically, it looks upbeat and simple, but it has a lot of depth and complexity that smoothly deceives you into relaxing, then hits you in the feels.

okay I don't know much about music but... the way the general melody stays kinda upbeat the whole time, just shaking a bit at the emotional parts feels reminiscent of how good of a liar Scanlan is, always keeping up the facade...

I like to imagine that in Exandria, this song is often used at weddings and other events in the same manner as “Under the Boardwalk” is in our world.
Oh wow... I can actually see Scanlan performing this song as his part of the Vox Machina legend. After all, he'll outlive most of them, but we all know he'll keep their story alive even long after they're gone. 😭🧡
And this song is so Scanlan. So jovial and upbeat, to hide the hurt hidden deep inside... But it's there in plain sight, if you just pay attention. :') You outdid yourself again!

The fact that both this song and veths song are so complex, long and beautiful and full of so much meaning just speaks depths about the amount of meaning and thought Sam puts into his characters and the stories he can weave with comedy and tragedy. You've done so well expressing those emotions and rolling the story in his heart
It's baffling how clearly I can imagine Scanlan singing this song (like literally having Sam's voice in my head). It fits perfectly, I swear I hear him!

I always find myself listening to these songs and being amazed that although they are never what I expected, they are exactly as they should be. The contrast between the music and the lyrics aligns so well with that between the character Scanlan puts on and the inner conflict he hides. Thanks for sharing this with us!!
I love that a bunch of your song lyrics just start upbeat and then at some point in the song it just slaps me in the face. Once again, it fits the character perfectly.
Just like with campaign 2, these songs are coming out just as I start watching campaign 1. It was either "Pain and Pleasure" or "Bright" that was the first song of yours that I watched, a few weeks before I'd even started critical role, so I loved understanding more about the characters and their songs the further I got through the campaign. Once I started Critical Role, I revisited your songs with more understanding, and I kept coming back to them as I got further into their stories.
Although I know more about the basic plot points of campaign 1 than I did about campaign 2 when I started, I can't wait to see how watching the livestreams will change my view on these songs the further I get. You fill the songs with little references that I don't think are spoilers because you only know what it truly means once you know how it all fits in to the wider story.
Every time I am blown away by the range songs you are able to create, and the different styles and meanings you weave together. I can't wait for the next one :)

Yay, new song! I've been waiting for so long for Scanlan's song, and no doubt it will bring me to tears as much as his character did in the campaign
The sort of Latin flair on the guitar work and melody is amazing, just smooth enough for Scanlan. Absolutely stunning work again, your music is incredible and showcases the characters perfectly.
The rhythm and tune of this song is so upbeat, and the lyrics are heart-strikingly emotional, just like a certain bard. I think you captured his essence so well, this was just delightful to hear but also deeply sensitive. Wonderful, as always.
Wow, you just have a way of cutting through the BS and getting straight to the core of a person. This is full of Scanlan's true journey in such a short song with a great and statisfying ending. I especially love the line "they buy my lies wherever they are sold". I honestly didn't think you could make such a sweet song about such a rascal like Scanlan but at the time, I didn't think Sam was going to be able to redeem Scanlan, so here we are! Bravo to you and to Sam for inspiring you!

To me, as one to seek such connections, through all this suite of songs there is a theme of forgiveness and change. Which, y'know tracks for this campaign.
OFC, this is separate from the songwriting talent evidenced on each track. I just find it fun to glom all of these song together as a standalone piece.

Yes!!!! I have been checking every hour for the next song! And what a wonderful song for Scanlan- you captured his journey so well. No one is able to express the true nature and heart of all these characters like you. “Alone I’m free” - aaaaa drew me right back to “I’ve never been more free than when I’m with you.” Tears. And then the complete shift in scanlan’s character for Kaylie, wonderful. This makes me want to go rewatch the end of vm again. 10/10 like always. Why was I surprised with how deep the lyrics got? Scanlan had a lot more going on than meets the eye, and I think it's too easy to forget that. Brilliant as always Lilli

This one is giving me strong melody and structure vibes of a real oldie "He'll have to go" by Jim Reeves.
gahhh scanlan as a character has such a special place in my heart. this song captures him perfectly with the upbeat tune and underlying sadness. it takes him through his whole journey and his heartwarming ending. absolutely love it!
This captured scanlan so well, really showed him growing and having trouble with it.
I like this a lot. Scanlan is a tricky character, there's lots of ways to go with him, but I think you captured one of the most interesting ones. He's unintentionally incredibly sincere. It's all through the filter of performance and heightened hedonism, but he's actually all heart. Something else that caught my attention was the way you sing this, and the music you play with it, they remind me of a 50's lounge singer. Like Tom Jones or something. I can hear that voice singing these lyrics, an older Scanlan still plying his tricks and incidentally getting to the heart of the matter while putting on a bombastic show.

listening to this, i feel as if im on a tropical island by the beach yet simultaneously having an existential crisis and despite knowing very little about campaign 1, i wholeheartedly believe that this sums up Scanlan’s character perfectly
Very glad I decided to stay awake for this. Heard that opening and immediately started grinning, my first thought was "oh this is going to be GOOD" and I'm not one to brag but guess who was right! Truly a perfect song for a powerful bard and it comes as no surprise because the only person who could have done him justice like this is an equally impressive bard.

This piece has a very, very folk soul it. It also reminded me of am Elvis song. Alas, i not a big Elvis guy and don't remember its name but it's one of his slow amd acoustic ones :)
I dont know if Scanlan's song could have been done better than this, all the right feels and perfect pacing with the lyrics slowly revealing how much is really going on behind the upbeat veneer, but still ends looking up and looking out for everyone else.

An hour ago finished the Italian song contest (Sanremo) and I saw a notification for the new video. It was 1:30 AM but everyone was still up so I thought: "let's just listen to it and tomorrow I'll find the chords...". Okay this was hands down my favorite of the VM songs. Scanlan was always my favorite of the original crew. He was insanely complex and deep while hiding it all the time behind jokes and quips. The signs were all there for those to see but people often ignored them because they didn't want to think about the clown crying.
