If These Locs Could Talk Short Film

- We shot this during the height of covid before the Crown Act was passed and it was so important to tell this story then and even more important to tell it now. So much was happening at that time in the Black community with our hair. Kids weren't able to graduate because they wore locs, or not being able to play in sports, or being teased and etc. We wanted to make a film where the loc community could be seen and celebrated! Hopefully you all resonate with the beautiful story being told whether you have locs or know someone in the loc community and if it's neither hopefully you can learn to appreciate something unfamiliar.
---------------------------
This film explores the importance and connections African Americans have with dreadlocks. Everyone has a story to tell but the commonality we have is the journey of learning more about ourselves through our hair.
IF THESE LOCS COULD TALK speaks to the part of us dedicated to changing narratives that don’t honor our humanity. This is a love letter to us, from us. It captures the rich and complex simplicity of our hair, specifically our locked hair. This subsection of the community has long been overlooked or relegated to a specific part of the Black diaspora. But, Locs are versatile and so are the people that rock them.
This poetic piece speaks alongside them, illustrating the why’s and how’s of their loc journey and what it means to them. Through this we learn more of ourselves as a community and are again reminded of the vastness of our expression.
Our goal is to take you on and audio/visual journey of the beauty that "locs" have set in our culture. It's not just a "hairstyle", it's a creative expression of who we are.

👏🏾👏🏾 As a person with dreads, I really appreciated this film and how it highlighted all the different aspects of what it means to have dreads. I didn’t realize I give head nods to people in the room who also have dreads until they mentioned it in the film. It’s kind of a unspoken thing. Congrats on a great film. 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so much! I was just at an event and literally a loctician approached me and I was talking to a guy with locs lol
I’m so proud of this body of work. You’ll did an amazing job
Thank you1!
Love the culture behind locs and this film was a beautiful insight into what they mean to others! Loved it Britt, nice work!!
Beautiful imagery, such a joy to have locs and be apart of this community
I'm ecstatic with how this short came out. It's such a beautiful film and gives me the feels. Onward and upward sis 🫶
this was so beautifully shot and full of so much soul!! i love this!!
This was worth the wait 🔥 beautifully done
Thank you so much!!
This was a beautiful documentary!! Job well done! I wish I can grow locs lol!!
Love this. I'm 5 years on my journey with these locs and have grown quite fond of them. I stopped calling them "dreads" because of the negative connotations and get many compliments when I have them out. Both of my younger brothers started theirs before me and one of my sons has a beautiful set, I'm kinda jealous of him because I only grew the top ala Killmonger like dude said in the film. Great work on this Brittney!
Needed this reminder. Really appreciated this film! Amazing work Brittney.
4 years loc'd now, and I really loved this film. Since having my locs,i've ondeed noticed that i tend to pay more attention to other locheads, giving them a discreet nod when our eyes meet, acknowledging their locs lol! This is a community i'm proud to b a part of 🫶🏽🇭🇹
This one is for the culture. Come on now this has that Vimeo staff pick vibes. Thanks for dropping this golden content.
Praying for a Vimeo staff pick!
That was awesome. The story must be told
I love this...I've had locs for almost 20 years...lots of stories to tell
-in lieu of my 1 year loc’d anniversary this is such a pleasure to see, thank you 🔒💜🦓
I never like my locs when I get them retwisted,, I love when they are old looking!! lol great short film!!
This film was so beautifully done Brittney 🎉
I love the aesthetic overall, I love the message and as someone with locs I appreciate this project. Thank you.
Love this! As someone only let his hair grow to the “can’t wait for them to get longer” stage of braids before cutting them off when I was younger, this made me contemplate locs for a quick second. I love the way you all shared these stories and experiences!
Loved it!!! Dope work as always. Loved the art within the art!!
Your work is amazing
Beautiful video. Learned alot
Incredible piece. The story telling and interviews were spot on. My locs grew for 6.5 years before I had to cut them for a job. To this day, I still have dreams about them. Keep up the great work. I hope this gets shared around.
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
My wife and I were just talking about locs, and the stigma that people often have. I think this is such a needed documentary.
This is simply wonderful! Becoming a big fan of your channel.

I love what you did with this one. Keep doing great things. I'm inspired
I love the way that you added visuals to your credits
This was dope! I always saw clips of this project in previous videos & was wondering when the full film would be available to watch. As someone who went through hair trauma & was chastise from both school & work, I appreciate this so much. If I ever get the opportunity to regrow my hair, I'll choose the locs moving forward.
Love it . Locs 🤞🏾

Brittney, this is just a piece of art. The colours, people and subject matter just align so beautifully. Congratulations
Man! This short film is so important to me! Having just started my local journey I resonate so much with the emotional part of this journey (4months in). I literally was just complaining to my friend about how bothered I was because my local weren't doing what I wanted them to do. 😂.
Thank you and congrats to Brittney and her team!!! This was encouraging and so soooooo beautifully shot! ❤🖤🏴👏🏾🥹💐

Was all this shot in 1 day? It’s crazy I found your channel a few days ago as I plan my own short project.
It was! We had an amazing AD!
Okay my Sis. Question: How did you go from the artistic idea for this short to organizing your project? Not so much of the cinematography aspect, but what was the shift or process that took you from the "I should do that" to "here's what it look like on paper."? If that makes sense!!!
So I had the idea and ran it by my friend who was a director and had locs. she pushed me and was like why not? I was like should I and she was like yep. lol. I knew I wanted to shoot outside and I knew how I wanted it to look based on how free our locs are. I started looking up images and went from there.

Rodger??!!! Lol
Black Identity
Do afros next please can i be in it?
I think the font choice was terrible, looks amateur. Everything else was perfect! Storytelling, composition, music, editing pace--SUPERB!
Thank you for your input. I'm okay with that this was 3.5 years ago and I continue to grow. I hope you got something else out of this more than the font choice but thanks for letting me know..
@@BrittneyJanae 4 compliments given, and you only choose to focus on the one criticism 🤦🏾♂️
D Smoke?
My bad just read the rules. 😂
Haha you’re good!
