Found your channel after your comments on twitter. You deserve more views man, your content is great! FFVIII, along with XIII are the two games in the series I believe got unfairly dumped on. Part of VIII's issues were rooted in the anticipation of another title in a similar vein to VII. That obviously didn't pan out, but the game has some really unique mechanics that help it to stand out imo.
Excellent retrospective! Can you do more like this in the future for other FF titles or Dragon Quest Titles? (If you are into that series) As for this game itself..... I would not pick up and play it again....lol. I am not a fan of the magic mechanic in this game, it seemed very tedious, I hated the level scaling cause you had to rely on GF's to do most of the damage and be at a low level to make it easy for yourself as you progress (yes you can call me a filthy causal i don't care lol) and the animation for the GF's alone takes so long. The only thing I liked about this game was the convoluted yet great plot twist in the game with the whole time thing. Anyway I still respect your work on this though. Keep it coming 👍.
Thanks and yes I do plan on at some point covering all of the final fantasy games mainline anyway I want to cover 12 and 13 first thought since those games are some of the more polarizing games. As for dragon quest it's gonna happen some day I loved dragon quest xi
Game i have a love hate relationship with. I love the graphics, characters, music....i hate how busted the progression is. I'm one shotting everything until the third disk where i grind everyone to 99 in island closest to heaven using degenerator. This game deserves a mod which overhauls this.

Awesome and informative video Spoons! I came into FF late (15 was my first), and I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve played so far. I want to play 8 myself, mainly because of its unique mechanics and develop my own opinion of the game (hopefully positive!)
While I wouldn't want ff8 to look any other way, they were trying to ape the resident evil engine right down to putting menu on circle and cancel on triangle. You don't ever see more than 6 characters on screen and additional characters are prerendered like in deling city or, hilariously, Cid in the opening mission briefing section. Also, battles are pretty much always against one or two monsters. Ff7 rendered multiple monsters in different formations and had a whole parade of Shinra soldiers marching on screen. Ff7 still holds up and didn't need a remake. The original is still far superior to the remake. Ff8 is the ff that needs a remake the most but SE won't do it because they're just all about them greenbacks and don't care about this franchise aside from how much money it can print. Sakaguchi probably hates this.
I didn’t like 7 or 8 all that much. My problem with 7 and 8 is not that they’re bad games it’s that they’re both painfully average. I grew up in the SNES era so I had Super Mario RPG, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy’s 4 & 6, Breath of Fire 1 & 2. So when I see someone talk about how PS1 as the “golden era” of RPGs, it’s like they couldn’t pick a more bland of a generation of RPGs to choose as their favorite. Even my personal favorites from the generation aren’t anything special. Tales of Destiny and Eternia, Legaia, Xenogears, Final Fantasy 9, Chrono Cross. It might be a personal bias of mine but I would much rather play Chrono Trigger for a day over Chrono Cross any day of the week.

You hit a lot of really good points in this comment. I 100% agree FF7 didn't need a remake. I'll be honest too I wouldn't mind a Final Fantasy VIII remake but I don't trust modern square to do it.. especially how they ended FF7R.
FF8 was my first FF-game and I still love it to this day.

I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 6. The SNES had some really great JRPGs. Which I do plan on covering.
