I've watched most of the builds on your channel by now, by far this is my favorite looking guitar body you've made. I don't even normally like this type of finish, but this one in particular is just beautiful

Luke, thanks for watching and the comment too!
Glad you're enjoying the project and I hear what you're saying.
Glossy, and urethane finishes, have their following - or not.
I like a little of everything, so I experiment and throw caution to the wind. Sometimes the wind blows crap back in my face, LOL. Good times.
Have a great holiday season, best wishes to you and yours!

Your refinishing looks a lot like my experiences. Stain, stain, sand back to bare wood x 10 and eventually you get a colour that is totally different than what you originally attempt and then you smile and say to yourself that the finished look is what the guitar wanted it to be.

Yep, thanks for sharing. Most folks when they talk about ‘modding’ are referring to just changing out the electronics, polishing up the body and working on the neck, maybe… The body is a canvas too, and when you stick your neck out and proceed with gusto on body mods, real wood working occurs and inevitable warts appear. Learn by doing, learn from mistakes, learn how to recover or when to walk away, gee, that sounds familiar, where did I hear that verse before? Or simply keep beating it into submission, the siren sound of the masochistic. The payoff of a unique perfectly playable guitar is utterly satisfying.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 9 měsíci

      Rick, thanks for watching.
That verse sounds a bit like the Gamble, was the Kenny Rogers?
I won't let these problems beat me, I will grind and plug it into submission.
My way or the fire-pit. Just kidding, I wouldn't do that.
We're getting close on this one.
      Be safe and take care!

@@theNextProject I've seen so many because of the illness and also because of the vaccine too. My gfs best friend is now permanently unable to work after the jab. They assume it has something to do how people react to the spike protein no matter how you come on contact with. I in a band and it was really going somewhere... Now I'm almost all day in bed or on the sofa because I can hardly move. I try to keep my mind busy and your videos are a realy good way to distract myself.

Yep, it was a real shocker to have the finish issue. I really didn't want to deal with the peeling sealer, then the issue got worse and I had to remove the veneer too. UGH!
At least I got a lot of practice, and I'm better for it - I will keep telling myself that.

Andreas, thanks for watching and greetings from Florida US.
I'm really happy with the paint at this point. Just a little sand and polish and it should really look amazing.
I seem to get a lot of practice doing some things twice. Sometimes I just don't like the look, or how something fits so I'll redo it. Sadly, this was just a crazy failure that required correction.
On the bright side. The redo went really well and the guitar got some upgrade and it far better for the extra time and effort.
Hope you are doing well, be safe and take care.

Nice job on the clear. Especially in those cavities you previously painted with a shielding paint.
But jokes aside, really love what you’ve done with the thing. Kind of thinking something matching blue jeans would look better on it, but in the end it’s not up for me to judge.
An old friend of mine loved to say that persistence is what separates the best from the rest. Looking at your projects reminded me of that. And proved that the old bastard was right. :)

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Josef, thanks for watching!
"Blue" jeans color is on the horizon. I was mixing and messing with some dye's and made a couple cool looking blues. So, I don't know when, but at some point, blue will happen.
Old bastards are a good source for some insight, always things to learn. I cause enough problems, and try to learn when I circle back to re-fix things.
My persistence is mainly driven by asking myself "if I bought this guitar (or whatever), would I be happy with it as-is?" So, I fix a lot of things, big and small. Some things that will never see the light of day get refined too.
I think it's a sickness, but I'm okay with it.
Hope all is well, be safe and take care!

Thank you for the response. Pleasure watching your projects develop and evolve. Personally think this channel is criminally underappreciated by CZcams’s algorithms. Hope that changes one day. But while it lasts it’s really nice and comfy in here. :)
Pretty sure that blue will look amazing, simply because this green one also does. Good call on that shadow black back. Pretty stoked to see where it goes from here.
Always found them (old bastards) the best company to stick around. And nowadays I pretty much fit the description myself. No regrets.
If you ever find a cure for that “have to make it my own” thing, I’ll be the first one in line. Because it is getting kind of ridiculous. It was ok to make something big a bit less boring and a bit more personal. It was ok to get something mid-sized custom build for me. But this year I’ve spent well over 200 hours on a mechanical keyboard. Handcrafting half the thing. And as much as I’ve enjoyed that time, this truly is getting out of hand. Simply because this evening was spent on developing a custom perlage pattern for a mechanical watch movement. And the thing (custom watches) is shaping up to be a well over 300 hours project with just about everything in it custom made, all while looking perfectly stock 5 feet away.
As the world is getting crazier by the hour, I’m still surprisingly fine. Thank you.
Hope the same goes for you.
      Best of wishes.

Much nicer green this time, i think adding the yellow brought it out, it was too dark before. Back looks amazing also. Ive always loved the way those ferrule plates look. And thank you for adding the lower horn arm cut. Now the body looks very modern style tele.

Agreed, the yellow did help improve the overall color and seem to add more contrast/depth.
I recently picked up a used Ibanez, and it has that same style ferrule plate, that reinforced the plan to include it on this guitar. Simple and clean!
The lower horn carve became reality only due to the failed first round of finish. I liked the idea, just didn't want to "complicate" the project originally. Well, complications found me, so I felt it might as well happen. Looks really good, and it more modern as you state!

Hey Chris, great to hear from you and thanks for watching!
The painting thing is a hurdle, but you can do it. I've been dabbling with painting these guitars for some time, and never really got the finish I was after without sanding and polishing.
I'm getting closer now. The exhaust fans have made a huge improvement. Now to work on a more isolated environment. Too much dust and bugs currently, but far better than what I was doing a year ago. Baby steps.
The "Ibanez" string through plate was just to make my life easier, and it looks nice too!
      Win, win.
Sorry, but I haven't really been keeping up with what you are doing lately. I'm just swamped with life right now, very little bandwidth. Hopefully the new year will open things up a bit.

      @theNextProject  Před 9 měsíci +1

I've been trying a lot of different things to cut the dye.
One issue I have to keep in mind is compatibility with my topcoat, which is automotive urethane color and clear.
Water has slow dry issues, rubbing alcohol didn't mix well with the Rit dye, but more testing underway. Rubbing alcohol does mix well with Transtint, and dries really fast.
I also tried Denatured Alcohol, but I question if it has some petroleum oiliness to it. If so, that could be an issue for my final topcoats.
Stove fuel, I may not be familiar with. Is it similar to Naptha/Lighter Fluid?
A lot more experiments in my future.

No, your video was not boring. It's just that I'm so tired. I had a hard time not falling asleep.
I still only have my plan to put a little work into that kit-bass by HB. Only a Gotoh bridge, ferrules for string through, and of course the Tonerider pup, CTS pots and Orange drop. There are actually 250k no load vintage taper pots, but no 500k no load vintage taper. Looks like I'm not the only person to prefer VT for tone control.
Will you wire the 4-way and the phase inversion? The phase inversion, which is actually only reverse polarity for the coil. I mean, for 4-way, you need three wires for the neck pup anyway.

This was a good accident, as the re-worked project looks better in a number of ways as you mentioned. So even though it was a bunch of extra steps, or re-steps, it is a better project in the end.
I try to show "some" of my blunders, it keeps the projects human, and I hope someone who may be working on a project will see this and understand that things go sideways sometimes. It's how we recover and move on that really counts. That's what I tell myself, LOL.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 9 měsíci

Hey, thanks for watching and glad to hear you're enjoying the vids too!
I've been using a PPG sub-brand clear and base coat for number of years now.
It's called ShopLine JC630 clear, and a slow hardener that goes with it - I don't recall that number.
Here's link to a product spec sheet for the clear:
      www.benspaintsupply.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/JC-630-Clearcoat.pdf
There are other very good clears on the market to choose from, but I originally chose this product because it is owned by PPG, and for it's lower cost than found on the higher-end PPG paint lines.
Since this is a guitar, it won't be in the sun, rain, snow, hail, dirt and grime, so I felt it was a safe bet for guitar work.
I haven't compared prices between product and brands lately, as I still have a number of ShopLine colors on hand, but it may be time to try more things.
For some basecoat colors, I also use paint from: usa.specialistpaints.com.
I've had good luck using their color and the PPG ShopLine clear over the top. I typically don't mix brands or even product lines of colors/clears, but so far this combination has been worked - your mileage may vary, so whatever you use do some experimenting and testing. Or, be safe and choose one brand and product line and stick to that, safe not sorry.
      Good luck with your projects!

Well, the plan on this guitar has changed drastically since I began.
It was to be a "simple" re-fresh of sorts. That plan went in the trash early on.

Memphis, thanks for watching and great question regarding the shielding paint.
Coating the shielding paint helps keep it from getting scuffed off, but can cause a "ground" issue.
The trick I'm using is mask off a small spot of the shielding, then seal and clear over that. Remove the tape later and ground (hopefully) all the shielding to the controls. That's the plan and I didn't show that at all - sorry.
So many little things go unmentioned and it's clear that I should give these items some discussion. Hope my brief description helps answer your question - and thanks for asking!
I'll try to show that in the next episode (if I remember).

I've seen this used on a recent Jackson Soloist guitar I worked on, it was grounded everywhere, and had clear over the shielding in all cavities. They used little electronic ground anchors and a small wood screw to mount it all together.
I've also seen Texas toast mention clear coating over their shielding paint, and I assume they too have masked off a small grounding point to the shielding paint.
      Glad you're digging' the channel.

I have not used the Jescar EVO wire, there stainless, but not Evo.
From what I gather, it is in between nickel and stainless for working. So, probably not to bad.
I really don't mind working with stainless, a lot of people say it's harder to do... I find it about the same. Yes, the wire is harder, but aside from cutting it... it's not a big deal.

Great question/concern and thanks for bringing it up!
I didn't mention it, but there is a small piece of tape over the shielding paint in the control cavity, then the sealer and clear were sprayed over it.
The tape will be peeled away and a ground wire attached.
Having the sealer and clear over the grounding paint should help keep the shielding paint from getting scuffed off, keeping it shinny.
I'll try to show that in the next episode - if I remember.
