What's Our Story - Calling Time

What’s Our Story was an ambitious project by Bristol-based sound artist and oral historian Mary Ingoldby to capture stories and memories of staff working at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals before, during and after the move to the Brunel building, Southmead Hospital Bristol. Working with Show of Strength theatre producer and director Sheila Hannon and photographer Simona Piantieri, personal stories have been transformed into drama, film, an online digital archive and exhibition.

Calling Time is a creative interpretation of the change from the old to the new, rather than a documentary. The film captures the affection for the old hospitals, the anticipation of the move, and the completely new environment in the Brunel building.

I was a student nurse at Frenchay from 1967-9170 and it was a most wonderful time of my life. It is so sad to see it gone.

Miss Frenchay. Was almost like a second home. I will never forget the staff there for as long as I live and its thanks to them that I'm alive today.

My nan used to work at Frenchay and due to my illnesses I spent much of my time there it was a memorable place and is weird it's not a thing anymore and kinda sad

I spent most of my childhood there being a burns victim
It was actually a lovely place the amount of times I was wheeled up an down that long corridor
Lots an lots of memories I’m nearly 40 now moved away but still have to have odd surgeries but it’s nothing compared to Frenchays welcoming hospitality I can’t believe it’s gone I’m not a fan of the new one it’s actually similar to the Norfolk and Norwich but all that history that’s now gone that’s such a shame
