  • This is a fun Halloween project. It’s easy as 1, 2, 3. All you need is the 1 Idea, the Pumpkin Lanterns, 2 Cedar or Pine fence pickets, and you create 3 boxed Jack O Lanterns.
    In the video I show you how I build them. No CNC, So everyone can make these.

    The 2 Options to cut your boards. This all depends on how true the wood is to what is posted on the sign at your store. I trimmed the bottom to get a nice clean cut.
    Option 1.
    1st Board cut 7 pieces at 10” or you can cut 6 x 10” and 1 at 8”. The 2nd Board will get 3 x 8” and 6 x 7”.
    Or,
    Option 2.
    1st Board 4 x 10”, 2 x 8”, 2 x 7” cuts and your 2nd Board 3 x 10”, 1 x 8”, and 4 x 7”.

    Very cool, thank you. Since I can only make straight cuts (limited tools, arthritic hands) I'll make all the surfaces as shown but do the face from coroplast and a razor knife.

    Cool project.
    Video would be a whole lot better if there was A LOT less of you talking to the camera and A LOT more of you actually showing the lanterns being built.

      Thanks, I felt that was the best pose, the ones in the background were placed there, but a little sketchy. The whole time I was like don't fall don't fall. That's for watching and the support!!

      Thanks for watching and Subcribing. With this one, I decided to make the video after I made just about all the cuts and started to paint. Left out all cuts scenes of actually cutting boards. Still improving with each video. Getting feedback good or suggestions on improvements helps with next video.

      The faces you can find all over online and just print out the faces... I just went to my local library that had a laser machine and had them help laser cut them out of acrylic. So I had a template to trace on the wood. Then scroll saw the faces out...and as far as painting I kinda made it up...the generic faces became orange pumpkins, the frankenstein I painted that green tint, and painted hairline area black, to resemble the 60s or 70s frankenstein for the Monsters...minus the spark plug things on his neck...ghost face just left the front white and the rest of body black..to resemble like in scream movies...like black outfit Hoodia with just the white mask...and Jack Skellington face is white, and added the black angle in front, to kinda give affect him wearing a collar of some sort

    Running into cupping pickets...any suggestion on trying to combat that issue?

    • @MightySawdust
      @MightySawdust  Před 17 hodinami

      @joshsummerfield5893 Are they cupping after you cut them or from the store?...I usually let them dry for a couple days in shop or garage before cutting...if too early they still will shrink or cup. The pickets are typically still wet. They either sit outside "wrapped" or outside for sale exposed to weather so if it rains they are wet...even if a new pallet gets put out the top few might be dry, but all inner ones are still wet. Treat like regular wood make she it's dry enough before using. Outerwise flip the board and put weights down middle to help flatten those boards as they dry a bit hopefully get the cup out.

      @@MightySawdust Had purchased them wet....left them in the bed of the truck under the tonneau cover for several weeks prior to cutting.... Thanks for the response. I just need to keep telling myself....Its not a Piano :)

    Do you have a printable copy of the cut sheet?

    • @MightySawdust
      @MightySawdust  Před 9 měsíci

      No, I just Google and eventually I found a page that you could just download or copy and paste. Then since I was going to be producing a bunch each year, went to my local library that happens to have a maker space and used their laser to cut out the faces on acrylic, some where from previous, so no extra cost. And just sized them to be within a 5 1/2" area with space on each size. So I basically created myself a template. Then I just place over the front pieces, trace, and drill an access hole for scroll saw. This year that process went faster with an upgraded scroll saw....from that craftsman to a 20" Dewalt. So much better, don't have to drill such big holes to feel blade through. But anyway yes there is a bunch of faces, I happened to fine one that had a bunch and I download. Then in photoshop I would select a few faces I liked, besides the 3 main ones. Frankenstein, Ghostface and jack skellington, picked a couple faces for the standard pumpkin faces to laser out once I sized them

    I didn’t have a problem with your video at all. You skipped the parts where we can just use our common sense. I didn’t have to sit there and watch you glue and tape, etc. We know how to do that already and it saves some time. I think your video was just fine.

      Thank you, not sure if your referring to a previous comment. Someone had issue when I said let's use our imagination. As at the point of recording the clip I didn't need another lantern. So I just quickly showed the process without actually gluing and nailing them actually together. But thanks for watching. Been bust summer with Farmers Markets, but I will have more videos coming soon. Just need to finish editing them
