I’m so glad to see someone from the guitar world is giving Mark Speer the credit he deserves. Dude shreds.
Many people are on this already for years now. Check his rig rundown c. 2018
@@blakedoingthings yeah that’s the only guitar world vid I’ve seen til this one.
Ill never feel like im alone in this world after being in this comment section!
So much emotion with his playing, but he often looks like he's only breating.
He does not shred. At all. He grooves.
What’s so crazy to me about them is it’s essentially a tight drummer playing simple lines (in very, very good time), a tight bassist doing a mellow but groovy line, and a guitarist with a ton of reverb playing melodic lines combined with triads and leaving space in his playing. It’s so simple on paper but so fresh.
Goes to show when you think everything in music has been done someone comes along and can have a simple yet great musical concept you’d never thought of before them. Awesome band.
You know, she's actually really good too; they all are, but I mean her bass lines are TASTY! Really great choices of melodies and riffs. I heard an interview with them and she was completely new to the instrument when they started, one of those "I went a bought a bass because a wanted to learn to play..." types of things. Whole band has a GREAT sound!
@@ObsidianLife I didn’t know that she learned that quickly! She must be a natural. I had a friend that got a bass as well just so we could play and he was better than I ever was after a few months. Some people just have it. I love her playing too. She’s great at walking around interesting lines while still hitting the chord changes and she always makes it groovy and tight with the drummer.
@@curtisbrause9255 Indeed! They are a special band!
And you can dance to it , do anyone can dance to your music? 🤔 that’s why so famous, it’s not a self guitar masturbation on stage ego trip , it’s a band jamming for the grove of people , did you get it? Do your crowd enjoy at the level of moving or just a bunch of dudes staring at your fingers, who are the only having fun! Yep just that, now what you have ? Love to hear it ?!
Reminds me of all those great motown hits. All the parts are super simple but they all come together to make a great track
They are even better live. I saw them recently in London and it’s an experience. People sing along their solos
That Alexandra Palace show was so good
I love Mark because he doesn't need to rely on flashy technique to sound cool and unique, he's more focused on sound and melody.
But he's got the chops when he needs them.
I started idolizing Hendrix when he was still alive, going through page, zappa, beck and others, and now Mark is my favorite.
Thanks for giving them attention!
page is awful though.
@@vrombo page was never my favorite either, but a lot of people worshipped him. And he is responsible for what millions consider the greatest solo in rock history.
@@itsROMPERS... millions consider rap as music I tell you. The mentioned solo was good at the time. Zepp is marketing story in the first place.
The most amazing thing about Khruangbin is that they are essentially an instrumental group that have achieved a huge following. In the vocal-driven pop/rock genre, their success is phenomenal. Great musicians.
They no genre, that is the whole thing. They dont follow a set factory clone formula.
Their sound is both intoxicating and relaxing at the same time. Marks tone in particular is unique in all the right ways.
Mark is a massive inspiration to me, love his style. Khruangbin re-ignited my passion in music, cant praise them enough.
Khruangbin
Their minimalism, both in terms of gear and music, is inspiring. They really embody the old "it's the notes you don't play that matter" mantra. DJ and Leezy just lock in tighter than anybody in the business and Mark floats on top, it's fantastic. Mark's guitar is a basic MIM 70s reissue with upgraded pickups and Graphtec nut/saddles. Leezy's got an SX(!) with DiMarzio pickups. DJ plays a minimal four-piece kit. No crutches, no cheats. My absolute favorite thing about Speer's playing is that he really doesn't rely on blues or classic rock tropes. As you note, he's outlining the chords and exploring the whole scale, not merely wheedling away aimlessly on pentatonic scales, which a lot of rock guitarists never graduate from. He gets inside the song and walks around. Super rare to be simultaneously innovative and also just really nice to listen to.
Rhett you need to check out this guitarist called “modu moctar” his playing is like a Middle Eastern sounding jimi Hendrix. Would make a great video because not enough people know about how insane this guys playing is
Atlin Gün is another fantastic band with a similar (but also very different) feel. Psych rock band from Turkey
can't forget Tinariwen, Imarhan, Tamikrest, Bombino, Kel Assouf
Strong agree on Moctar. Dude is not only embodying the music of rock, but the ethos and spirit as well. Read up on how he has to sleep with one eye open because his government basically wants him dead.
Mdou muctar is from 🇳🇪, Africa. His a member of the touareg desert people. And yes he is amazing guitar player.
There’s a lot of great players from 1970’s Zambia, who were in bands now known as Zamrock.
So happy to see you talking about Khruangbin. They're a truly unique and phenomenal band.
I'm so happy that someone took a second to spell out the name of the band in print !!! I never would have figured it out on my own so THANK YOU.
H o w
Love Khruangbin. Mark Speer's Rig Rundown is excellent, and aside from using flat wounds, he doesn't change his strings for long periods of time - like the whole tour. They are going for a very warm sound, so he's not worried about loss of high end from old strings.
Mark and Laura Lee have said their inspiration is Thai funk. They've integrated Cambodian, Vietnamese and other genres into their music. The name Khruangbin is Thai for "Engine Fly" or the equivalent English word "Airplane".
Came here to say this. Defs not middle eastern lol.
Having been bored with guitar and guitar-based music for over a decade, Khruangbin were a revelation to me back in 2018. Made me actually want to pick up my guitars again and explore forgotten music especially stuff from South America/Africa/South East Asia/Middle-East.
Mark Spiers is criminally underrated.
Maria También (Live on KEXP) is a pretty wicked tune. Speer is very fluid, DJ is just solid, and Laura, well, she got that hypnotic hip groove thing going on.
That entire performance on KEXP is amazing. That was my introduction to Khruangbin. I immediately bought two of their CDs and have them on constant rotation.
@@CarrotDugTooDeep ya, I was introduced to them off that KEXP show as well. Their "Austin City Limits" sets are excellent too --catch it you haven't already seen it.
If yall like those, check out the Pitchfork session. Best one IMO, but to each host own.
Pelota is better you’re welcome
@@joelhague5515 Evan finds the third room on that pitchfork set is amazing
So psyched to hear you give Khruangbin some love. I'm from Houston and have been following them since the early days, so it brings me so much joy to see how big they have gotten. Back in the GreenRoom days, I shared this Khruangbin with some of the other members. It didn't go over as well...haha...so I'm glad you are the one giving them the love now!
Agreed - Mark Speer is really just an amazing guitar player. He has such great control. I really love how he incorporates trills, hammer ons, chords and leads. Just an amazing player.
Bravo for noticing and acknowledging this band!! they are fantastic.. my personal "discovery ' about 7 weeks Into lockdown in 2020..I literally became obsessed ..for 2 years!!..Only in the last 2mo have I stopped playing any and everything they have put out constantly lol...my neighbors are all KB fans and have no idea wtf they have been hearing all this time..
Waited impatiently for two years for a chance to see them live, then when they came, I saw them 2x in 3 days here in LA at the Greek ...
They fucking killed it.
All the fan videos of this tour posted here have been just awesome.. seemed like every other week some one was posting their entire set from the lastest shows.. watching how their set list has evolved thru the tour and how EVERY freekin show is sold out makes me sooo happy for them. This is the first new music in 10-15 years I have lost my shit over, and I'm proud to say it.
Long Live KhruangBin 💗💗👍
Pronounced .: Krung- Bin
I got to see Khraungbin on Jam Cruise in 2019 and it was magical! They played the coveted sunset set on the pool deck stage. Khraungbin, at sunset, in the middle of the ocean. I will forever cherish that show. Thanks for doing this video!
Glad you’re into these guys. Seeing them for the 2nd time later this summer. Even their cover of “Christmas time is here” is rad. Thanks for highlighting them! Mark Speer and Julian Lage are my two favorite modern guitar players.
Mark Speer is an amazing guitarist. He sort of plays the rythm and lead guitar at the same time while also leaving enough space. As a guitarist it's very easy to do too much playing just one of them. That hammer-on and trill-heavy style also adds to his uniqueness.
Check out Andre Fludd's channel, which is dedicated to the concept of "rhythm lead".
Been into Khruangbin for a few months ans can't get enough of Mark Speer's playing .
He really understands the guitar and is becoming one of my faves along with Zappa +Hendrix + Keneally+ Macachek+Mclaughlin +Page .
He adds something to the world of guitar i haven't heard elsewhere .
Mucho respect to Mark Speer , he get's it .
Part of what makes his guitar so good, at least for me, is the bed that the drums and bass provide. I mean that 90’s tight drum sound - esp the snare - is just fantastic. Love this band.
Thank you for this. Hope you get to ser them live soon. I love the medleys they do live. Great band, great guitar playing an killer bass lines!
I have always loved watching Khurangbin on you tube and listening to their records, and then I saw them live…. And it blew me away, the bass combined with haunting melodies at volume is very difficult to describe, it hit me in the heart that I wasn’t expecting and I realised that this band was more than just music, it was true art. Wonderful
Mark is one of the best on the electric guitar I have ever heard and I'm over 50. With the reverb he sounds like two guitarists playing at the same time
Just saw them on Tuesday in Missoula, MT. They are amazing and I’ve been geeking out to them for quite a few years now. Each of three are musically brilliant.
Wow, so smooth and flowing. Emotions showing and growing! Great band!
Fantastic video! Really thoughtful explanations, and beautiful playing examples. Also, just great to see another spotlight on Khruangbin!
Love the feel of each member of the group. Marks work playing rythym and lead guitar at the same time. Magic!
I got to know them since I work for the airline that recently lost their instruments, luckily they have recovered them now. Sad that I met their music this way but it is certainly unique and amazing!
Thanks Rhett! Great video and love hearing what you are into. Thanks again!
Been listening to them since the tiny desk came out, such a refreshing take on electric guitar. And couldn’t agree more on the rhythm section, just simple and tight, perfect groove.
I absolutely love this band and saw them on their current tour (actually wearing their tour shirt as I type this). Mark is such an awesome guitar player, and is a big inspiration for me when it comes to leveling up my playing. He seems to excel at filling in the gaps with tasteful transitions between lead melodies and chordal work, which is something I've never even bothered to practice; I'm either riffing or playing lead. Amazing video Rhett!
Triads are your friend, get to know them well. And once you've found a triad- say you find an Em7th you like- now find the position of the E minor scale that's close enough to where that chord is you can devise a line which ends on the same note that's defining that triad. For instance- if it's a minor triad, find the flat third and end the phrase on that note- if it's a 7th then find that note, a major- find the perfect 5th and 3rd- etc. It sounds very melodic because you're outlining the chords with your lead line.
@@stoneysdead689 totally. This is something I need to work on personally (actually learning the neck, and subsequently identifying those notes to outline chords). One of my steps towards improving as a guitarist is to complete the Cory Wong academy. Different style, but I love him too, haha.
Their music makes me feel all kinds of emotions. I listen to them all the time, and I really enjoy their collaboration with Leon Bridges.
Thanks Rhett! Already have them pulled up to check out as soon as your segment is done...👋😎🤙
ThnX, Rhett!!! Always cool to help discover a nice band like Khruangbin‼️💛‼️‼️💛‼️Never heard about them, but I like their sound‼️🎶😃🎵‼️
I'm digging the bass. Love the interplay between the guitar and bass. Great bass tone and killer groove.
Even before I watch this video, Khruangbin stand alone in their brilliance…
Thanks for giving them props, Rhett!
I really need to get out more! I've lived in Houston all my life and I've spent a little bit of time gigging in the scene but I've never heard of this band. Thanks for featuring on your channel. I'm a fan for sure!
fell in love instantly. Dripping with groove and vibe. Great video Rhett! Your love of Derek Trucks and Khruangbin is heart warming
Ohhh this made my day! Mark Spear is amazing. Khurangbin make amazing music with such a simple (but not simplistic) approach. His switching through lead and chords sounds so seamless that I showed it to a friend and he didn’t believed it was just one guitar. That’s truly magic. Thanks for paying tribute to this band, loved it.
Meee too!!!!!❤️❤️
I dig these guys. A while ago I heard his explanation of their creative process that sounded really interesting in a very minimalist way -- the drummer records a beat and sends it to the bass player. She focuses on the I note. Since he knows the I will always be there, doesn't have to focus on playing it.
He said he plays flatwound strings so he never has to change them -- which means they always sound the same. That, and using the same pick for months at a time. It's pretty amazing.
Such a great method for minimalist grooves!
Really appreciated this episode, I came across this band a couple of years ago, and instantly fell in love with their style of music, they deserve more wide spread recognition. Nice one!
I am so glad that you covered them, love his playing.
I'm a member of a weekly solo challenge group and was introduced to this band by learning the opening sections of Cómo Me Quieres one week. It was certainly a different experience to most of the more 'normal' solos I have learned.
The first Khruangbin record i heard that got me hooked was 'The Universe Smiles Upon You'. Different vibe and inspiration than many of the others. Don't miss it.
Great video Rhett! Love that Khruangbin is getting so much attention now. They aren't the only group doing a 70's throwback style, of course, but they're doing really interesting things with the aesthetic.
Great job highlighting some really cool contemporary guitar playing!
Glad you are promoting them! I discovered them listening to NPR a couple years back and had the pleasure of seeing them live recently. As much as it is about Mark's drippy melodies, the rhythm section is KILLER and key to their groove. It's not often these days that a group comes up with such a signature sound.
I'm so glad he's finally getting recognized as the modern guitar hero he truly is. His live sound was hands down the most perfect and beautiful guitar tone I heard in my life. His improvisation is where the genius really is. It's never the same thing twice and it's always super well executed and tasty.
A guitarist who can restrain themselves to pick in the middle of their dynamic range has the room to breathe with their dynamics. Great example of that here.
Good video. Rhett does a great job of covering this band, Mark's approach, and fostering interest in them. The Premier Guitar Rig Rundown is definitely something to check out.
I've been playing guitar since 1987. I am a trained classical guitarist and consider myself a reasonably advanced player in pretty much any musical genre. Take my word for it: Mark Speer is a genius. One of the very best electric guitarists I've ever heard. Like Hank Marvin, Speer is principally a melodic player who focuses on tone; he gives the guitar a proper voice and makes the guitar sing. Extraordinary and brilliant. Just beautiful.
Found out about Khruangbin from a youtube video suggestion for "Khruangbin Pitchfork Live" several years ago. That is still my favorite recording of theirs. Great band and a great appreciation video!
Me too. CZcams had been suggesting that concert for months before it popped up on autoplay. They've been my favorite band ever since. Well, them plus King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard which is a very different sort of band than Khruanghbin.
Brother from another. I remember I kept seeing a thumbnail labelled "KhruangBin" in the suggested videos column here in YT I ignore it for almost a month before I finally clicked it was either the KEXP (Seattle?) performance.. OR and. Most likely it was the Boilerroom gig...
The Pitchfork video is absolutely KILLER. I remember finding Khruangbin on YT like 5 years ago. The first listen I thought it was boring. The second time they came up I listened with more attention and I was hooked. Been a big fan ever since, its been nice to see them get so much love in the past year or so.
I agree man, they’re one of the bands I can listen to everyday and all day. Marks playing is so refreshing to hear.
I love this band!! I'm loving the deep dive on this! Thanks Rhett!
Amazing video as usual Rhett love this band
Their pitchfork performance is amazing. I've watched probably 10 times.
I picked up an electric guitar again after many years after hearing them... Definitely inspiring for me.
Is an updated guitar collection video in the works???
I am always looking for new music so Thank You!
I love that they're getting a bunch of recognition and are kinda blowing up at the moment. Love em so much and hope they keep going for many more years!
Rhett, It's fantastic that you are aware of Khruangbin and took the time to give them props and turn people on to their music. I have been listening to this funky little Texas trio for years now and am an avid follower of their live and studio performances. The drummer though... 🤯 Thank you Rhett!
Saw them live. Absolutely incredible. Mark is such an underrated guitar player.
i just want to say Thank your Rhett because I love this band in your video is the first time I've heard them, I'm a bass player always looking to challenge myself locking for the most complicated music but this band blew my mind I saw the tiny desk complete whit out looking at the time has passed a long time since that happens to me so Thanks, man.
I hadn't heard of this band until watching this so thanks so much for sharing. Been listening to them the last few days constantly and love their sound. The guitar sounds are so good. Thanks
Every one of their songs sounds like it could be the opening credits music for Narcos and I'm here for it 👏🏼
I saw him in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall. A great group of musicians with a minimum of technology, no tons of distortion, and very high creativity. A must-see live. My favourite new live band.
I hope they return soon. Just discovered them and I can't wait to see them live!
Thanks for this video. I was unaware of Khruangbin but have been listening to them a lot since you posted this. I am really enjoying their music and he is an amazing guitarist.
Love Khruangbin! Thank you so much for helping me understand Mark's playing!
I love their sound. I love their music. I don't like what are they doing with prominent vocals and lyrics, lately. I adored them being almost exclusively instrumental band. I hope they get to their roots some day.
Love this band. I discovered them while walking through a festival several years ago and their sound stopped me in my tracks and made me listen. Little did I know they would blow up within a couple years, work with Jay Z, etc. I would love if they did an album with more vocals, but the guitar player is a very melodic player so that's certainly not necessary.
I've been trying to figure out August 10 by ear and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite tunes just to whip out when I want to just play something.
Check out their collaboration with Leon Bridges.
Ya, Texas Sun and Texas Moon with Leon Bridges.
Love love love Khruangbin. You perfectly encapsulated how I feel when I play along and listen to them :)
I’ve been preaching this band for years. They’re incredible. I was stoked to see you feature it. Thanks for this, I’m going to try the always on wah and study Spear’s stuff a little more. Love your stuff dude. Thanks.
Accidentally discovered them 5 years ago when they were touring with Leon Bridges. One of the beet live performances I’ve ever experienced, from a pure atmosphere perspective.
I was beginning to think I was the only one who appreciated his unique sound. It really is extremely creative ... and awesome! Thanks for this study. Great job, as usual!
Is this guy fake whose commenting on this?
@@azaraelhyzer3874 Yes he is. Do not react.
One of my favorite contemporary bands. Got to see them live this spring. They were fantastic.
Thanks for this video. Updating my playlist.
I love his playing. Gives me the feeling that guitar is still a relevant and fresh Instrument.
These channels made me a better guitar player and guitar-listener. Freaking value the hell out of you guys
Love these guys!!!
The Infamous Bill is such a killer groove track, and Evan Finds the Third Room is another that defies being labeled.
Thanks for shining the light their way.
Well done Rhett. Glad to see you do a vid on them.
Definitely one of the most unique bands to come out in quite a few years. Laura Lee's lines are so much fun to play.
Mark is an incredibly underrated guitar player and he should be our modern guitar hero
Hey Rhett, thanks for bringing this group forward. I have a new bass tone and feel to chase!
Great video, just what I was looking for. Subbed
You should have worn one of their wigs!
Being from the Middle East I can confirm the influence Of Mark Speer. One can hear similar melodies in Turkish, Egyptian, and Armenian music of the 70s. Thank you so much for this video and for drawing our attention to such a great band.
This also reminded me off one of my favorites from that part of the world. Kourosh Yaghmaei.
Yup. Great pick on this series. You'd have a hard time coming up with such an unusual profile for the next video on the series! You might as well come up with some of your personal favourite tunes/artist.
Very clever&very informative, and I had fun grabbing the guitar and trying to play along!
Awesome video on these guys!
Really discover how good Mark is when you try to play the parts he plays.
I found out about Khruangbin when they opened up for Leon Bridges back in 2018, they've also since become one of my favorite bands. Their success is all the more impressive being that they're a 3-piece instrumental group, totally deserved!
Great video!!! Love this band from my city!!!! I discovered them from my sister in Austin who would play Khruangbin for her daughter! Also I love their performance on KEXP !!!
Thanks for finding me a new favorite! Amazing music!
Their Pitchfork video blew my mind! Seeing them live is a must if they're near you.
Yes it's a perfectly recorded concert
I totally flipped over Khruangbin and binged on everything they had on youtube. Mark Speer captured my ears with his lush guitar playing. Laura Lee (Leezy) invented a new style of feminine campy stage outfits while playing infectious grooves. DJ (the clock) has a universe of nuances in his drumming. Then after a year of Khruangbin mania the pandemic lull sort of dulled my cult fascination. The shine left for me... and the sameness sunk in.
Agreed, after a while you want them to play more aggressive stuff. It’s too much of the same thing.
Yeah, you can’t listen to them over and over. It’s like some of the older jazz guys. Barney Kessel or Herb Ellis. I love their playing but every once in a while I’d think, “c’mon man, bend a string.” But I know it’s not them, it’s me.
@@nomadman123 you are so right because more often good jazz lays down a feel and tickles it slowly along making you beg for more action. Then when they let it rip you are so engrossed in the groove that you soar above it with them. Khruangbin leaves you dog paddling in the groove. It's a great groove but I can see in the comments here that I'm not alone wanting a little more rip. Maybe if I were younger and very stoned I wouldn't care.
I have never heard of them. HUGE THANKS!! Great music. Great guitar player. Thanks again 🙏🏻
They are fantastic!!!! I saw them live in VA. They played for two hours straight and sounded awesome. Thanks for your hard work!
One guy I really love is Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, his playing is that old school blues style.
Mark Speer is hands down the most interesting guitarist in the scene today. I saw K live a few months ago, they were absolutely phenomenal.
Thanks for shedding some light on these guys or different artists that many of us may like that we were never aware of. Styles of playing like this really help me have a freshness to guitar playing that’s needed if you have been exposed to so much playing that sounds of a similar type.
Glad you picked up on Khraungbin. I've learned many of their songs on guitar. A hint on the song August 10. It's 82 bpm and Mark bounces his triads off this reggae type groove. Also, after each lead line he bounces back to the A and D triad. I have a video here on CZcams showing if you want to watch.
Nice video.
