- Well, it only took me exactly one month, but I *finally did it*. 350+ images, full color, with the best of my current abilities...! I've always wanted to do animatics, but I figured I'd start out doing something completely ridiculous -- that being, might as well torment myself by over-complicating things. There's a lot about this I'm not 100% happy with, a few continuity issues or limitations with my slideshow software (or limitations with my current skill as an artist, psht), but I'm excited to finally get this out there for y'all. I love Hadestown and definitely plan to do more of these in the future... although... maybe the more typical animatics. With grayscale and sketchy linework.

Orpheus: la la la
Literally everyone in Hadestown: *I feel a disturbance.*
Orpheus, in Hadestown, is probably among the only portrayals of an Ancient Greek Demigod that *feels* like it's supposed to. He isn't a kid with a special destiny, or special powers, or just great connections. He is *hope* and music and the spark within every one of our souls. He hears the music of the spheres, and is so entranced by it he's barely even aware of the real world around him. He is *never* alone. When he speaks, the world listens, and when he sings it sings right back to him. And why shouldn't it? But the moment that goes away - the second the rocks and winds do not spontaneously harmonize with him - he's just a person again, maybe for the first time in his life, and doubt comes in.
IDK, I took that "Ancient Greek Hero" course with Harvard online a few years back and this *really* feels like the kind of feel the actual cults that worshipped him for centuries were often trying to go with. He's more otherworldly and like a force of nature than the actual gods.
You probably would too if a wall decided to start crying.

In theory, Hadestown has great potential to either be an animated or live-action movie. The plot is amazing and adaptable based off the story and songs.

ooh i like the way his magic almost seems to infect the worker's chorus when the walls crack open-that faint spark appearing in their eyes. it's interesting, and a little sinister.
This is great, how closely designs matching the broadway actors too
I definitely wanted to capture the actors pretty closely, since they're the most tangible designs on stage...! I'm glad that it worked out. :D
The graphic novel quality in this animatic is astonishing. I hope you can reach out to the creators on a collaboration. It would be fantastic to see a comic made on the musical for all ages.
P.S-I *love* the E N D choker on Atropos neck. Little details like that make my inner geek squeal!

I think there are two parts of this that I really love over all else (Because this is so much to love about this animatic oh my god its so pretty).
The "La la la la la la la" section where it flashes around to different perspectives and everyone just going "Whats going on???". You can really get the feel for just how close this simple music man is encroaching on the realm of the god's powers with his music.
And then oh my god the flashebacks of Orpheus and Eurydice being cute and in love is just *chefs kiss*. They're so cute and you can just feel the love. This animatic above all others ive seen for the song really hammer home how this is a man on his way to fight for his wife, and bring her home.
Other animatics for this song always seemed just slightly off to me, where it felt like he was chasing after her simply because he was left behind, but this one really nails the whole "I'm taking my wife back and nothing will stop me" vibe it should have.

Currently, my favorite thing in this animatic is Hermes' grin on 'Well...that's a start.' Such an intense "LET'S DO THIS" moment! :D

the amount of work you put into this is frankly _astonishing._ this deserves so, so much recognition. i love all the little details and every single frame has so much care and effort put into it even if only appears for a flash (hello @ eurydice wearing orpheus' clothes im heart eyes) and just... you're incredible!! amazing work - i simply cannot understate how much i admire this.

oh my god this is seriously amazing and next-level quality. How cool if the cast, especially Reeve and Eva, saw this? This is just amazing. I really felt Orpheus' desperation (i think I audibly said oh no! when the dogs bit him), the 'flashbacks' to life on top were seriously amazing (how cute is Eurydice wearing Orpheus' clothes at 4:20?), and the reaction of the workers to Orpheus' song were stunning. Damn, I really want a graphic novel now ...

this is absolutely STUNNING. the way you worked in the people in Hadestown responding to Orpheus singing his song was magical and gave me chills. I have not seen a Hadestown animatic this impactful in a long time - well done!!!

was brought here by an AO3 recommendation, whew! That's amazing, all of it, I love the composition and angle of your art. I'm especially fond of 3:10, when his song is literally represented with that golden light, and everyone takes notice of it. You really twinged at my heart with the flashback scenes of him and Eurydice, you made even a sexual moment seem so soft and innocent, it was amazing, Orpheus just wants her back! You should be proud of yourself, this is nothing less than brilliant.

5) The whole lalalala sequence i am at a loss for words
6) The lamps from the musical!!
7) The whole end sequence with Orpheus avoiding the workers

Holy crap this is amazing! Most animatics for this don't seem to do the full song much less in full color and detail the entire way 😍 It looked so cool when Orpheus sung the wall open and the flashbacks to his time with Eurydice. Plus I loved the last scene where they follow the blood. Great job!

I don't think the English language has an adjective to describe how amazing this is. Like, goddamn, I want you to get hired to do a full-length movie of Hadestown, or anything else for that matter. Just...the colors, the detail, the creativity...you created an amazing piece of art that perfectly builds off of and compliments the song. Looking forward to whatever you do next :)

The animation took the song to the next level for me...as if it wasn't powerful enough already.
this animatic brings a theatrical feel to this already moving song & it goes so well with this individual song & overall musical; everything looks so well thought out & done. the part before Orpheus goes into Hadestown... 👏 l found myself cheering him on like “heck yes!” when he started singing & his song is the light for those in Hadestown. & i can really feel how connected he is to Eurydice & how much he loves her from the flashbacks scenes. Not to mention the art looks amazing in itself. the expressions r really well drawn, for one. altogether, this is ✨ absolutely brilliant ✨ 👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏💗💗 I could watch this over & over; I love all of the detail & the end is so cute too ☺️

Holy shit... Your work made me feel things. You know that feeling you get when you're reading or listening to or watching something that grips your heart and doesn't let go? And all you can do is tear up and grab your chest and know you're going on a rollercoaster ride that's going to make you feel so much awe, and joy, and heartbreak? This is one of them. You're so talented and this is incredible... Especially those flashback scenes? God, the rising in tension you can hear in the music was made so much more impactful with your visuals. I literally said, "Oh my God" at that part. Suscribed!
EDIT: Specific Details I love
1. That silence and tesion in the beginning with Orpheus looking around.
*The golden lines surrounding Orpheus when he sings and the gold highlights in his eyes
2. Hermes being concerned surrogate dad and booping Orpheus with the carnation.
3. That snake cave entrance, damn
4. That first "Wait for me" line sequence was so fluid and I loved the determination in his eyes
5. Basically all the facial expressions! *chefs kiss
6. Taming the hounds with his voice because ofcourse
7. That injury continuing to have impact and callbacks
8. All the costumes showing the Broadway cast costumes. The fates were basically the OBC actresses animated and its amazing!
9. Orpheus's voice having such an impact on the inhabitants of the Underworld and it opening the wall
10. Hadestown people with those dead deeply disturbing eyes
11. the brick tattoos on hades' arm
12. God everything that's visualized in Orpheus's refrain.

first i was shocked you made a FIVE MINUTE long FULLY COLOURED animatic. then i was shocked at how unique this one is compared to other depictions i've seen! truly amazing work. i hope youre proud of yourself!
I'm in complete awe. When the video started and I saw the full coloring and amount of detail presented within the opening shots I knew I was in for a treat. AND GOSH DID YOU DELIVER!! This goes far beyond what I would consider a simple animatic. I'm floored that you managed to accomplish such an admirable feat in a mere month's timeframe and to a high quality! The sequence of events displayed especially in regards to the memory flashes with Eurydice really emphasizes how deeply she meant to Orpheus for him to keep pushing on the journey, which was not easy by ANY means! I could probably gush on about every crucial moment down to the frame but the point is, this was an incredibly ambitious project that you conquered and I'm shocked that it hasn't gotten more attention! Not only is your art style absolutely gorgeous and captivating, I also loved every single little thing you came up with to enrich this beyond all imagination. Poor Orpheus getting chomped by the dogs but fighting through, all those beautiful flashbacks with Eurydice, those lamps showing up towards the end - god it would take too long to name it all, but this is utter perfection.

Just saw the stage version in Detroit you really did a good job capturing the drama and striking imagery of the song. And the swinging headlights and heavenly light the emanates when Orpheus sings was also a nice nod to the theater interpretation

I like so much of what you've done here. While I'm sure some of it is based on the original cast, I still like your depictions of Hermes, the Fates, Eurydice, and Hades. No knocks against Orpheus either, I just imagined he thinner when I listened to the songs. Beyond that. Your depiction of Hadestown is also great. I somehow didn't imagine a sprawling town but considering the narrative and the allusions they were making with it, that totally makes sense. It can only be something like that. I also like how you filled in the blanks of time passing. It's clear that it does but you don't quite get that from listening to the songs alone. You did a good job emphasizing the bond Orpheus and Eurydice must have forged.
Frankly, it made their fate stiiiing more.
But short version? Amazing work.
