    Welcome to Season 4 of FTB Film Study! Former Indiana head coach Tom Allen was hired as Penn State's defensive coordinator in late December following the departure of Manny Diaz to Duke. While both men believe in a proactive approach to generating turnovers and negative plays, they go about it in completely different ways. In this video, Coach Codutti highlights tendencies in Allen's scheme and philosophy depending on the down and distance.

    I like Tom Allen, but he will bring some unique blitz schemes from the D like Manny Diaz's approach. I think Coach Franklin wants to implement some of Diaz's schemes dependent on the situation. Great pick up by Penn State football and Coach Franklin!

    Personally, I'd rather be more aggressive up front, like Manny was, since pressure is so important and games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. However, everyone seems to love the Tom Allen hire and apparently he has a great reputation as one of the better DCs in the game. I hope some of Manny's scheme translates to Allen's so the players pick up Allens D easily.

    Tom Allen is a GUY. But I miss Manny Diaz already.

    Blitz design. Blitz design is Allen’s special skill.

    After the beating that the PSU secondary took against Ol' Miss and the addition of 4 PAC-12 teams to the conference, Tom Allen's schemes are a welcome addition. Allen has been known for his innovative blitz designs, and any hybrid edition of Allen/Diaz blitz designs should improve the pass defense overall. Allen's defenses may not appear to be as flashy as Manny's during a game, but a look at the statistics after the games will prove Tom Allen's worth.

    I think T. Allen will do fine, because he has a ton of talent and depth to work with, but replacing Manny is hard, because I don't care what anyone in the nation says, Manny was the best damn defensive coordinator in the nation, fact!!!! I am confident Tom will do fine, if the new OC can get the offense fixed, we are going to be very good 👍!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled

    I like Tom Allen but these plays you just broke down a running QB would be unstoppable against this defense

      He showed you mostly passing plays... Tom Allen isn't an idiot lol he won't have deep coverage on a run play.

    Great breakdown -- I was looking forward to this one. Gonna rip the scab off, though, and just ask: to what do you attribute the abysmal downturn in Allen's defenses since in the last three year? A lot of the film here is from IU's banner 2020 season, which was definitely impressive. But statistically they have been horrendous--even accounting for the Jimmies and Joes--ever since then. Obviously part of it is the transfer portal and NIL pulling Allen further and further from actual coordinating responsibilities. But was he also running stuff that his players' level of talent just couldn't achieve?

      That is Joe Milton at QB and you see now why he transferred to Tennessee. He started there and was benched after the Pitt game in favor of Hendon Hooker. Milton started this year for Tennessee and was mediocre at best. Dude has a rifle arm but inaccurate as hell.

    The two coordinator hires still feel like rushed hires. While they may be competent, it seems like PSU will be headed for several seasons of 7-4 football. The 2023 team may have been the high point for PSU.

    • @kevinchandler179
      @kevinchandler179 Před 4 měsíci +1

      First of all, it's absolutely impossible to go 7-4, when we play 12 games!!!! Also, we are not in trouble of anything less than 9-3, but I think 11-1 is definitely possible, 10-2 at worst!!! WE ARE

    • @teekay_1
      @teekay_1 Před 4 měsíci

      @@kevinchandler179 Okay, then 7-5. They've lost a lot of talent, and they have to play some very tough football teams, with a coaching staff that is at best _unproven_ and a head coach with a bad record in big games (which isn't an opinion, it's a fact).

      @@CFBPSU It is sometimes tough to overcome that Penn State pessimism, some of which James Franklin has brought upon himself. Franklin is warming up to the transfer portal of late, and I hope that Pat Kraft will take on many of the NIL duties so that he can concentrate more on recruiting (his strength) and game day decision making (not so much a strength).
