How to test a CAN network with a scope.

  • The best way to test a CAN bus network is using an oscilloscope. You can scope the bus network and determine if the network is active or Shorted. Depending on the waveform you get, you can determine what type of short the network has.

      What if your scan tool will not com with modules other than the PCM? My Autel will not com with any Chrysler modules except the PCM so I'm kinda stuck

    I think this is a great video that is applicable to many cars on the road, however this principle will not work with newer cars with gateways between the DLC and network

    I deal with CAN issues a lot and I can pretty much get by with just a multimeter but one of my coworker has a scope and it seems to be more efficient in diagnosing. May have to get one myself.

    Good information. Currently have a no communication on the D Bus but am able to still pull codes with a pocket scanner, but not the ICOM for ISTA ( BMW & Mini. ) Appreciate the information brotha.

    GM have individual can networks. For example you have can three can for can five and so on. So when you scope it out which network are you looking at?

      Now days vehicles have multiple CAN networks A,B,C and so on. You would test the one you have communication issues with. If you can't communicate with several modules, refer to the BUS network diagram and see which one you would test.

      The high side of the CAN bus is pin 6 and the low side is pin 14. Connect each channel to one of them and a ground on pins 4 and 5.

    how do you go about tracing down suspected shorted can wiring? can you do it like we do with any short by switching meter to ohms and placing one lead to ground and other to shorted can then go and wiggle harness till we see the meter change and disconnecting parts of harness to isolate it?

    all we are doing is seeing voltage. why cant we just use DMM? it get a voltage reading. if we short Hi or Lo to ground you will get the voltage change. im just trying to understand why we really need Oscilloscope?

      Communication lines switch at such a fast rate that a dmm can’t interpret what is actually happening, it will just give you an average voltage….. you need to SEE what the waveforms are actually doing in order to diagnose accurately

      A short finder will help if one of the lines are either shorted to ground or power.
