  • Hey! I am a senior art education major and in this video I compare and contrast the difference between being a fine arts major vs an art education major. This is just my experience and it might be specific to my school, but I think it could still help anyone who’s having trouble deciding whether they should major in one vs the other. If you have any questions after watching this feel free to comment and I will try to answer your question as best as I can. Thanks!

I like your idea. Thank you for sharing! I'm doing researching on art Ed and illustration. It gives more freedom than fine art. What school do you study in if you do not mind? I am an asian kid. Will there be many open positions for Asian kids after graduating from art ed? What maybe concerns if you come across any thoughts? I'm 30 years old and feel worried about if my age is too much for starting an art Ed major too. The peer kids maybe very young. I'm afraid that I will be only one their and feel lonely in working. Do you see this is true? If it is true, what could do to pass this problem? lol. Sorry for asking you many questions at one time. I really adore your sharing and info so I do not want to miss out your insights. Very appreciated in advance.

Hey! I went to Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina in the US. I just graduated. There were only about 8-10 art education majors per “grade.” And out of those we were pretty much all straight out of high school. In the general fine arts department though we had several adults who had come back to school later in their life to get a fine arts degree. If you are very social and outgoing then your age should not be a problem when making friends. But if you are quiet or have trouble making friends then it might be hard to fit in socially. It just depends on your personality and how outgoing you can be. Academically though your age will not matter. Anyone can decide to come back to college at any time! Also there are always art teacher positions available in grades K-12.

I have my bachelors in Interdisciplinary studies (concentrations in psychology, studio art, and public health). I’m looking at the graduate level what it is that I have as potential career possibilities. Do you have any insight on what differences there would be in terms of the jobs in the two degrees? I’m still trying to decide if it makes sense to go forward into more education as long as it provides me a more stable foundation

hey, thanks for the comment! Education is always a stable and safe option, especially with the teacher shortage. I am in my second year now and LOVE my job. Plus, if you’re in a public school (like me) you will get set up well with benefits, retirement, etc. I don’t really know what the career possibilities are with the bachelors you described, but if you are interested in being an art teacher then you can probably just add on a 1-2 year education masters since you have studio art as part of your bachelors. I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher and feel secure that this can be my career-it will not suddenly disappear… if that makes sense.
