I recognized Ray Stevenson by his voice from his role as Titus Pullo. What I really enjoyed about this series was the mixing of real Pirates (Blackbeard) with fictional ones (Long John Silver).
The make-up artists really did a solid job in changing Ray Stevenson into the intimidating monstrosity that was Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach for this show. Exactly as you would imagine him: 6ft4 tall, bíg strong dude, with a black beard, bright-blue eyes that could stare right through your soul...and armed like a platoon! He got a pérfect introduction to the series in that awesome 'Three Lies'-scene? It's a statement to the actor Stevenson to play a scary, calculatingly intelligent and serious person like thát, compared to the jolly/nonchalant berserking 'stormtrooper of Rome', Titus Pullo? He was amusing in The Three Musketeers, as well, as Porthos. But in Black Sails, they gave Stevenson the chance to really portray one of thé most notorious pirates in history, as a humane being, and Stevenson náiled it imho! I think Stevenson's portrayal of Blackbeard is perhaps the most realistic in current TV-production? Of all documentairies, historical facts and 'wild stories', this sorta puts a fár more believable story to the man?

So many ships during the age of sails overtaken by this innovative and cunning scheme. They were faster than olympic swimmers, but still chose a carreer as pirates!
The ships were anchored, so likely not moving. It's also unclear that the dived most of the way - they didn't really show much of the swim, so there's no reason to believe they didn't come up for air at regular, reasonable intervals.
Gets a little far fetched at times but overall an outstanding series with plenty of action on all fronts from a cast that wasn't high profile but nonetheless did a fantastic job
I mean the entire thing is totally implausible, from the discipline of pirate gunnery to the 3km swim they did in boots and coats to the fact the Royal Marines just apparently didn't exist during the boarding fight. The Royal Navy tactics of ANCHORING to fight the enemy is just historically wrong. But its a fun clip with many shooty boats so yknow...
@@dynamo1796 The typical engagement distance during naval battles at this time was a few hundred meters, not 3km. Humans can swim a few hundred meters. Also, the marines were not on the ship because they were on shore besieging the pirate encampment on the island. Would they have kept more marines on the ships in real life? Maybe - I'm not super familiar with British naval practices. But it's not "totally implausible" like you suggest. Maybe not super realistic, but there certainly is a plausible and obvious explanation in the show as to why there weren't marines on the ship. You'd have to be a huge history buff to know otherwise. I think that almost every complaint I've seen about this clip are because people are forgetting (or don't know) the context of the clip, or because they're nitpicking relatively small details like the ships being anchored. Sure, it's not like this is the most realistic scene. But it's not so ridiculously unrealistic that you can't enjoy it if you suspend your disbelief a little.

In defense of the tactic, a historical sword of the type they were using weighs about 600 grams, with scabbard, another few hundred depending on what it's made from. every man could comfortably swim over with a sword of twice the weight even if relatively unskilled at swimming. The main problem is overcomming the several hundred men on the ship once you got there, could have been made much more epic as gunners turned to grab whatever weapon was near by and repelled boarders. Its not a movie, its a show, Black Sails. 4 seasons. All developing in and around the seas of Nassau on New Providence Island. i think the only fictional character is captain James Flint, hinting to the movie Treasure Island; the search for the famous treasure of captain Flint. Other figures like Charles Vane, Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold and Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach, did actually exist and were notorious pirates. Ofcourse the story is mostly fiction, there's dots of history in it, and it is a véry spectacular and entertaining show. If you like Pirates, you're gonna love this!
Seeing Star Trek may be more similar to reality than this, the pirates actually avoided confrontation with a warship at all costs, their ships were not sufficiently artillery, and obviously they were looking for simpler prey, such as merchants or populations poorly defended coastline. On a large number of occasions, the Spanish evicted these murderers from the islands and areas where they settled without the possibility of resistance, and later after the English settlement in the area, the same thing, if the navy came, the pirates could not face them. . In the end, a romantic myth of these people is generated, who did not stop being murderers, and criminals.
True they were the terrorists and mafia of there day but give them a little credit for a time they were consistent thorn in the side of spanish and english empires before they were shut down. When they were shut down completely it took the navies of multiple nations to do it.
I don't know about a British ship but Bartholomew Roberts is reputed to have taken both a French and a Portuguese man of war during his career. Naturally he took them both by surprise and gave them no chance to use their armaments that would have torn his ship to pieces.
True but if one captured a French, Spanish, or Dutch Man-o-War and loaded it up with a few extra guns/surprises (as they did irl) then it's possible to do. Though from a pirates perspective not profitable enough to do so.
The fact that they swam nearly that entire way coming up every once in a while, with their weapons and wearing boots, is possibly the most asinine thing i’ve ever seen. That’s just so badly out of the realm of possible that i can’y take any of this serious.
it is farfecthed to swim that much without some floating aids. specially if they carried weapons. maybe some flotsam or barrels could help. but sneaking by using the dense gunsmoke to cover the swimmers does sound plausible. however taking a royal navy ship does seem unplausible since they were supposed to have marines detachments and sharpshooters in the fighting tops, any boarding would take a bit more to happen unless they ran for the chasers.
@@ernstschmidt4725 not to mention the fact that the ships were over a THOUSAND feet apart so first of all, they would be *exhausted* after that swim, if it was a small boarding party, i can see how they would have avoided detection, but in order to take over a fully manned brig, they would need so many men, there's no way they wouldn't have seen them coming
And usually on deck are way more people than this 10 or so in these scene. And even if you take the upper deck. Guess what? The lower decks are filled with men too.
I Love Black Beard Jack and Anne, Charles! I love all 4 for them! I love how the redcoats didn't know what black beard was up to!? Then the fear grip the captain as he saw Blac Beard ship coming at him out of the smoke, like a monster about to destroy him!
Black Beard was actually killed by Lt. Maynard. Maynard, in an unarmed ship, outsmarted Black Beard by hiding his men below decks and luring Black Beard into boarding him. They then sprang from hiding, taking Black Beard and his men completely by surprised. Maynard then basically out dueled Black Beard one on one, with a Highlander decapitating Black Beard from behind.
Maynard had 2 armed ships, Ranger and Jane, they said that ship Jane even damaged the pirate ship Advanture with either lucky shot or the crew's skill, Blackbeard's ship took out Ranger's captain and 5 of his men, but Maynard and his men hide inside the other ship Jane to deceive Blackbeard when he entered their ship, they basically sacrificed a lot of men and needed an ambush to took out Blackbeard. Also Maynard didn't beat Blackbeard in 1 v 1, his sword was broken by Blackbeard then Maynard shot him with a pistol but it didn't stop Blackbeard, then Maynard's men attacked him from behind so thats how they beat him not 1 v 1. Maynard says they shot him 5 times and landed 20 sword cuts, Blackbeard was outnumbered heavily by them.
Teach was repeatedly keelhauled in real life, one part they actually got right about his death. he was decapitated afterwards, and his body was said to circle the ship 3 or 4 times before it sank, and the sailors took that as a sign of doom
''During the battle, Maynard and Blackbeard ended up in hand-to-hand combat. Both pointed pistols at each other. Maynard shot his adversary at point-blank range, while Blackbeard missed. However the shot failed to stop his opponent and barely slowed him down. Both drew their cutlasses and a melee ensued between the two. After a short period, Blackbeard managed to break Maynard's cutlass. When Blackbeard was about to deliver a killing blow to Maynard, another sailor, a Highlander, jumped on Blackbeard's back and inflicted a deep wound. With the intervention of another sailor, this redirected Blackbeard’s cutlass and struck Maynard’s knuckles instead of killing him. Maynard and his crew were then able to kill Blackbeard'' Maynard was losing 1 v 1.
@@jancello yeah, most of those would probably be sub-10 pound guns, not likely to quite THAT much damage unless the Royal Navy took to putting a 32 pounder or larger as their chase guns, which I doubt.

Its often baffled me that people romanticize pirates so much. Yes the tales are alluring being so fantastic and so remote but the real accounts are utterly gruesome. They were criminals and engaged in brutal acts of barbarism both at sea and on land. Yeah the navy was the good guys.
@@poling1990 I suspect people confuse pirates with privateers. Privateers were commissioned by people like Queen Elizabeth I and received money and knighthoods from the crown (e.g. Sir Francis Drake, Sir Henry Morgan). That does sound glamourous, but I doubt it fits into today's political climate (e.g. 'colonialism') although it might be feel agreeable in the future since the UK are supporting the Ukraine more than most, and the Ukraine might triumph over Putin. (The Spanish behaved like Putin today and the privateers worked against the Spanish Armarda).
I'm a fan of Black Sails. That being said... while the visuals and general cinematography here is cinema worthy, the way the pirates win doesn't make sense. Swimming that far unnoticed (yes, they would have posted lookouts... maybe not expecting swimmers, but possibly expecting boats) is not believable. In terms of storytelling, I much preferred season 1: It was made clear that a single (unseen) British warship was something they were genuinely worried about and when they foolishly attempt a 2v1 against a heavy warship, they get their asses handed to them. In later seasons, it seems the warships were no more effective than Imperial Star Destroyers.

One of the best series out there with one of the best stories and no one knows about it
I recognized Ray Stevenson by his voice from his role as Titus Pullo.
Thank you. The second I looked at his smirk, even under that beard, I knew I recognized him.

Great series!! Acted superbly.
From what I recall, it was an RN sloop of war with a commander and a couple of lieutenants that were hired by New York to get him. They won an almost pyrrhic victory and then got stiffed for the promised reward. There were no women jumping around but the ones held captive as rape toys in Blackbeard's cabin and the men just died with their pay in arrears.
It was actually a mere lieutenant -- named Robert Maynard -- who bested Blackbeard with two small ships. The final battle was 14 against 12 men or so.

Gets a little far fetched at times but overall an outstanding series with plenty of action on all fronts from a cast that wasn't high profile but nonetheless did a fantastic job
Hey if something's not 'far fetched' these days what good is it....
But it's not so ridiculously unrealistic that you can't enjoy it if you suspend your disbelief a little.

yeah yeah.. you can swim that distance unnoticed while wearing clothes & carrying arms and board a towering ship and still be battle ready and overcome its crew. would be much more realistic if they were launched by using mangonels to board the ship.
Maybe consider documentaries then
In defense of the tactic, a historical sword of the type they were using weighs about 600 grams, with scabbard, another few hundred depending on what it's made from. every man could comfortably swim over with a sword of twice the weight even if relatively unskilled at swimming. The main problem is overcomming the several hundred men on the ship once you got there, could have been made much more epic as gunners turned to grab whatever weapon was near by and repelled boarders. I am SMH quite severely that the boarders seemed to be swimming over in boots though.
@@averagejo1626 Every man could. i think the only fictional character is captain James Flint, hinting to the movie Treasure Island; the search for the famous treasure of captain Flint.
Finally a Sailship Battle where the wind actually matters
Seeing Star Trek may be more similar to reality than this, the pirates actually avoided confrontation with a warship at all costs, their ships were not sufficiently artillery, and obviously they were looking for simpler prey, such as merchants or populations poorly defended coastline. On a large number of occasions, the Spanish evicted these murderers from the islands and areas where they settled without the possibility of resistance, and later after the English settlement in the area, the same thing, if the navy came, the pirates could not face them. . In the end, a romantic myth of these people is generated, who did not stop being murderers, and criminals.
Quite right!
It's also a show. And in this the pirates have a Spanish first rate which is larger than any of the English ships
It's not based on reality, it's a prequel to treasure island.
True they were the terrorists and mafia of there day but give them a little credit for a time they were consistent thorn in the side of spanish and english empires before they were shut down. When they were shut down completely it took the navies of multiple nations to do it.

I doubt there was ever an instance where a pirate ship ever took or even seriously damaged a British Man O War
I don't know about a British ship but Bartholomew Roberts is reputed to have taken both a French and a Portuguese man of war during his career. Naturally he took them both by surprise and gave them no chance to use their armaments that would have torn his ship to pieces.
Right, but it sure does make for some cool television! 😉
True but if one captured a French, Spanish, or Dutch Man-o-War and loaded it up with a few extra guns/surprises (as they did irl) then it's possible to do. Though from a pirates perspective not profitable enough to do so.

This series would have felt more realistic if the Royal Navy were portrayed as the good guys and the pirates were the baddies.
Season 1 will always be season 1 . They need to show new things to keep you more. The problem for is not enough naval battles and short duration
Well personally i found it uturly rewarding watching the effectiveness of that spanish man o war, at the end of season 2...
