Oh and the story of Rocky Horror is it started out on the West End in London as a play, Then it was on Broadway in 1975 and THEN was made into a movie. It became the cult classic because of all the cue cards that made the audience part of the show. Then people started dressing as the cast and not only did the scenes but sang the roles onstage directly under the movie onscreen.
Eddie was the singer Meatloaf and his part of the show was part of his brain was placed in Rocky. All of the references in the play are from classic old time movies.
Oh one more thing, Frank N Furter/ Tim Curry was a singer in England but went on to do the movie Clue. (in case you haven't seen it, that would be a perfect reaction movie).

Holy Cow!! that was fun, great reaction guys!! I was 18 when this came out in 76 and started hearing about these midnight showings with audience participation and people dressing like characters from the film. I never participated when I was young, they played the movie at midnight, and I usually had to work the next day. I think your analysis is spot on as usual. The movie was thought of as just a fun unique thing to do , when you were young. I would never have guessed it would still be culturally relevant almost 50 years later. In 2005, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Congrats on your growing channel, I have been there almost from the start!!

'your analysis is spot on as usual.' Agree
      Well done!
I was one of those that went to Midnight Showings in a large old fashioned theater & every seat filled with fans like you two in addition to live action fans actually playing out the the movie line by line on stage in front of us below the screen with many, if not most, in costume. Hell 3/4 of the theater was 'in costume' in one way or another. It was a riot. Absolutly unbelievable. The whole theater screaming. Because it's midnight showing you can bet a large percentage of the participants were high as hell, or drank before going. & Those are the 300 people screaming & throwing things.
You weren't going to a movie, you were going to an event...
Wish you two were there, you would have loved it!🤣&You're so right about the mess.
The mess left behind was one of the major reasons they stopped most Midnight shows. The mess angered theater management. & Damage to theater screens, sealed the deal.

Now a history lesson. Back in the late 70's and 80's, the US was seeing the rise of the multiplex, with theaters being built with 4, 6, 10 screens. This led to the demise of many older single screen theaters. These theaters started showing more obscure films, this one included. The interactive part evolved over time, with many viewers dressing in character and performing songs in front of the screen. If you lived in a city of 100,000 or more, it was likely there was a theater that was showing this 7 days a week, usually at midnight. It became a cult phenomenon with many die hard fans seeing it 100's of times. If you financially adjust the revenues for inflation, this may be the single most successful movie of all time.

As I understand it, Richard O'Brien wrote this to accomplish a few things. One was that being an up-and-coming theater actor in London was not working well for him, because he was having trouble finding acting jobs. Another was that he was working through gender issues, and this story allowed him full rein to explore those issues. He brought into it a love of rock music and a love of old 1950s/60s sci-fi B movies. The result was this cult classic.
It was originally a stage production in London for a few years, then someone tried to take it to Los Angeles, where it closed after a short run. But a Big Name music producer liked the kooky story and LOVED the music, so talked a studio into making it into a film. They filmed in the UK with a small budget, but the real problem was trying to figure out how to market the movie. Again, luck: about then a fella in New York City started doing midnight features at low admission prices at his ratty little theater. He actually was a connoisseur of weird art films and independent foreign movies. When he brought in "Rocky Horror", it took off. It was there that the fans would return again and again, eventually developing the audience interaction activities over time.
For some, the gender fluidity of some of the characters helped them work through issues of their own, mirroring Richard O'Brien's original personal intent. For others, the story appealed to their creativity or their sense of absurdity.
There was something Zay said, about the clash between the culture of conservatism and a culture of no boundaries or barriers ("polar opposite worlds). That analogy reminded me of the title of yet another sci-fi B-movie: "When Worlds Collide". Just to remind you that the lyrics of the opening song sung by the disembodied red lips are referencing cult classic sci-fi B-movies.
"The Day the Earth Stood Still"
    "The Invisible Man"
    "King Kong"
    "It Came from Outer Space"
    "Forbidden Planet"
    "Tarantula"
    "The Day of the Triffids"
You guys asked if there was any 'deeper meaning' behind the story or any of its elements. I think the mixture of gender-fluidity, ignoring cultural traditions, and having difficulty in finding one's place in the world is about feeling like an alien in a world blind to one's own perceptions and reason.
Consider, "Rocky Horror" the original stage musical was created and performed in the early 1970s
Contemporary to it was the glam rock era of David Bowie (as Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars, 1971-73), the New York Dolls, Alice Cooper, Roxy Music and the like.
Music of the time was the Kinks' "Lola" (1970), Traffic's "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" (1971), Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" (1972), Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" (1972), and Roxy Music's "Editions of You" (1973).

Before Arnold Schwarzenegger popularized weight lifting (and Nautilus made it possible in fitness centers), only odd people lifted weights or even worked out. (By today's standards, the first Superman, George Reeves, is pudgy with a slight potbelly, not the cut man we think of as the character should be.)
Charles Atlas however, had an ad in just about every comic book and blue-collar magazine for decades in the first part of the 20th century, promoting "In just 7 days I can make you a man." It featured, in cartoon panels, a 97-lb. man at a beach having the sand kicked in his face as the beach jocks steal his girlfriend. And if you were to buy the Atlas program, a week later you could compete on equal terms on the beach. (Today we call that false advertising.)

Its so awesome watching u guys do all the participation stuff, that's the best part of this film :D In terms of the decisions behind RHPS, it's literally all in that song that bookmarks the beginning and end of the film - it's all parodying and paying homage to all those 50s and 60s science fiction films. You can hear the lyrics mention the famous movies in that time like Forbidden Planet, King Kong, etc. The fact that this movie even got made and approved of in the time it came out baffles me 'cause it's so ahead of its time. They had originally planned to cast well known actors (Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry weren't well known yet) but i'm so glad they went for unknowns, except for Meatloaf, of course. Richard O'Brien who plays Riff Raff was the MASTER behind the music, he's so underrated.
If you guys have cinemas who do interactive screenings with shadow casts and everything, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEAAAAASE GO IT'S AMAZING XD I went with a mate of mine just before Halloween (I live in Australia) and it was so crazy, everyone was dressed up and i so did not expect to see so many superfans with all the stuff to throw in the cinema lol. A drag queen came up to us before we went in and asked if we had been to a RHPS screening before. I hadn't and my friend hadn't seen the film yet and then out of nowhere, she drew a 'V' on our foreheads with lipstick to indicate that we were virgins hahaha. Half the crowd were virgins and they had us do some hilarious shit before the movie started like making goose orgasm sounds, seriously u gotta go to one of these screenings one day you'll love it XD

Me and my friends dressed up and went to see this at the theatre (stage not film) every year when we were young. The stage version is the best way to experience this as the cast interact right back at you with the call outs. We went so often we got to once see Richard O'Brien (the writer/author and guy who played Riff Raff) perform, and also went for the 25th Anniversary showing at the Royal Albert Hall and met a lot of the original cast from the film.
Once you've immersed yourself in this madness, you can never go back!

I've seen it 3 times in theaters. Each time the audience had different responses to the dialog. The 3rd time my date enjoyed the show so much she married me (eventaully). We're still together 30 years later! Your joke about being who you really are was the theme Obrien was trying to get across.

I was WAY too young when I first saw this movie. It was very dark and confusing to me, but I loved it for some reason. I think most of the credit goes to Tim Curry and the rockin' songs! I'm glad you guys enjoyed it and I commend you for doing the audience participation parts (and no, the movie was not written with that in mind-it was a stage play first though).

My poor daughter was raised on Rocky! Her father played Eddie and I played Magenta in the local shadowcast. My girl had no choice but "BE IT"! I continued doing shadowcast as Janet until I was about ready to POP! We got a kick out of a VERY preggo Janet!!! 31 years later, may daughter is still a fan and can't help but do the Time Warp when she hears it in a store...LOL!!

Oh gods this was such fun! Thank you for going all in, made for a fantastic video! If you ever are able to go to a live event, together or on your own, you definitely should, it is so much fun and the atmosphere in the room is insane!
If you want to see a live version they recorded a very unique show for the 40th anniversary back in 2015 from London's West End, where there are a cast of different narrators, and Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff and the creator of Rocky Horror) comes on stage as well. Of course a reaction to it would be fantastic, even if it was a Patreon exclusive, but I would for sure recommend you watch it either way, just too good not to! Ok, best reaction to Rocky Horror I've ever seen. I don't think anyone's ever done a proper participatory version of this until now. There were still some canted responses that could have been added, but it would have given too much of the story away. You guys killed it though!

I don't know about today, but in the past it seems like the "live" shows were done at midnight. Many times there would be people leading who would stand up at the front. I'm supposing those people were old hats doing this for long time.

  • @johnnehrich9601

It is hard to think just how strait-laced American society was, half-a-century ago. This movie was so counter-culture and shocking to most people that I think what initially drove the audience participation was the sense of belonging to the small community of people in the theater.
If you told me back then that Pride events would bring out mass crowds of people in every metropolitan centers all across the county and not just New York, that acceptance of LGBT would grow to where many politicians go out of their way to attend these events, instead of hide from them, that marriage equality would be (at least so far) the law of the land, I would . . . I would . . well, I don't know what I would do.
Guess the movie was truly showing a time warp.

I took my wonderful Cuban boyfriend to see the rocky horror picture show at a midnight showing in the movie theater in coconut grove, Florida in 1981ish. I had seen it once before but didn’t know viewers acted it out.
He hadn’t been in the USA very long (Mariel boatlift).
We sat in the back of the packed theatre and when people started spraying water he was terrified and climbed over the seats to get out. He thought Americans were bonkers!
I reassured him that it was all in fun and he settled down and enjoyed the movie.
He probably tells his grandson and great grandkids about it now. 😂💕

When I was going to see this, we sat in the balcony. Just before the Time Warp started, we all ran as fast as we could to get down to the stage for it. When it was over, we got up and ran as fast as we could to get back to our seats before Frankie showed. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen him in the elevator, lol.

    Guy's great job ...
As a viewer who has seen this in the theater so many times over the years, i lost count. Couple things i recommend .. 1. There is an interactive sound track (audience participation) you can listen too to get a better idea what to say and things. It was recorded by the FAN CLUB in new york. Yes, there is a FAN CLUB. 2. Go see the movie in the theater, you will not regret it. Keep in mind there is a remake out, so be sure its the ORIGINAL 1975 showing. I believe the remake came out in 2006. It's good too, but you wanna check out the original (1975). 3. As for dressing up, usually those that do go up in front screen and act out scenes with the movie.... oh PS: Tim Curry also did a movie called "CLUE" with 3 different endings ... fun. Usually they only show 1 ending per theater (or used to) and you never know which ending you will get. It might be on the marquis as Clue 1, Clue 2, or Clue 3. I also heard they show all three endings in one movie. Still worth the viewing.
Again it was great fun watching your reaction as you never seen it before. Great job ... thanks ...
