Bo Burnham | “Eighth Grade” | Q&A + Screening

- I attended the screening of “Eighth Grade” at the Montclair Film Festival and took this footage.
The footage from this video is from the 2018 Montclair Film Festival in Montclair, New Jersey. Bo Burnham’s first directorial film, Eighth Grade, was being screened, with viewing being opened to the public. The first portion of the footage is when Bo came out to apologize to the people in the standby line who wouldn’t be able see with film due to the theatre running out of seating. A dozen or so people at the front of the line were able to see the movie due to empty seating (luckily I was able to attend).
Having been in the standby line, I was one of the last to enter the theatre (which was awesome because I ran into Bo and asked him which door to go in). Anyway, I ended up getting a seat in the last row (there was one reserved seat right behind my row). Before the film began Bo Burnham was brought out to giving a little opening dialogue about Eighth Grade (which you can see in the second clip). Once the movie began Bo sat in the reserved seat right behind my row.

After the film, Bo went to the front of the room and answered several questions from the audience. Lead role Elsie Fisher could not attend the screening at Montclair.

I was able to see the screening of “Eighth Grade”. Hope the footage I got wasn’t too bad! Here’s my short review of the film:
In this review I’m going to try and give you a good overview of the film without revealing any spoilers. (Be cautious as there may be minor spoilers from the Q&A).
Eighth Grade is a very well written film about an eighth grade girl’s last week of middle school, in which we get to see a glimpse of her struggles in middle school. Elsie Fisher, who plays the lead role of Kayla, does a great job of bringing to life the awkwardness of middle school, with the situations she is apart of being believable and even relatable, straying from many of the cliches other similar genre films have. The funny bits of the film definitely had a Bo Burnham touch to them, and the deep, unsettling aspects were portrayed well.
I definitely recommend seeing the film once it comes out, as it is entertaining and also an eye opener to the new world in which we live, with social media at the center of our lives (not just limited to middle schoolers). Whether you are a fan of the director Bo Burnham’s previous work or not, Eighth Grade is definitely a great watch!

This made me cry, and I have no clue why. I'm 13 and the last friends I had decided that I was too nerdy, but have no trouble asking me for help with homework whenever they need it, and sadly I have absolutely no problem giving it. I realized that I have always been the one to pick on, and I think that is because I don't let them see that it bothers me. It does of course, but I am much more worried about not being mean than being treated nicely.
A lot of people think that I'm stuck up, because I'm really shy and don't like talking to people I have never met. For example, sometimes, for the strangest of reasons I'll get a sudden burst of social anxiety, I was using a computer for science research, but my class was all out, so I had to go next door. At the end of the period I went to give the teacher the computer back, and to say thank you, when he asked me where the grade 7 class went, and, thinking he meant my grade 7 class, said math, and-keep in mind this teacher was perfectly nice- Said that he meant the other grade 7 class. And I still have no clue why, but that scared the crap out of me
So I barreled out of the classroom sitcom styled (complete with jumping over a chair) out of the room and into the hallway. I don't really know what is wrong with me, or why so many people who barely know me hate me so much, but I guess that is the way it is. That's why I love Bo so much, when I first heard his song Nerds I thought 'Hey! One for us' and now whenever I feel ostracized by my peers (or just am ostracized by my peers) I listen to that.
And to anyone reading this in a similar situation, just remember, you probably didn't do anything to warrant this treatment, maybe you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I wouldn't change a thing about the way people treat me, because I know that it has made more empathetic, and I know now that while maybe I cannot stop people from being bullied, I can provide comfort. I hope that if you are unhappy, or just numb that you find happiness.

I'm in 8th grade and just turned 14 last Monday. I relate to a lot of what you have said.
For me, I get very anxious when talking about very personal things, especially when talking about anxiety, depression, or my family life. (Yes, I get anxious when talking about my anxiety. It's great.)
Today in Social Studies, we had a fishbowl discussion. (I can't really explain it, so you can look it up if you want.) It was about TOPS in Louisiana and how we should deal with that because the changes will occur when my age group graduates in 2020.
The last question was "What is the biggest issue that your generation deals with?" The people in the middle started with technology, then my friend Bethany started talking.
She brought up the topic of anxiety and depression from school and your homelife. Then she brought up that you could see a councilor, but most people don't. I wanted to add my 2 cents before someone said something dumb about mental illnesses, so I started standing up while she was talking. However, I was told to sit down so she didnt think I was rushing her.
Then lo and behold, the next person said something very ignorant. He said that most teachers at our school don't give out homework, so it is really dumb to be stressing out over school when you get home. Then, get this, he said that if someome says something that upsets you, people run to councilors saying that they're being bullied. (It is actually very ironic that he said that bc he is one of the people in my first block that makes me not want to go to school.)
What is worse about that is that some people (other people that make me not want to go to school) *started clapping.* They started clapping for a very ignorant comment.
While he was assuming things and not thinking about what he was saying, I starting having a panic attack, but no one noticed. And thank god this time I didnt start full on crying. (My panic attacks include me having shakey breathing and breaking down and starting to cry. Not even a little bit. I mean full on streams down my face.)
Thank god for my teacher bc he told everyone that they shouldn't be clapping for that crap and he gave them examples of what anxiety would be like.
Things like this happen a lot more than you would think. Hopefully less people act like they do at my school when I go to highschool in August. If you are reading this, thank you for listening to my dumb story of me freaking out.

The right people will make you an even better person. Coming from someone who was in 8th grade 10 years ago. Stay true to yourself and you won’t go wrong.
