    It is a bit of an urban myth that we don't have hot weather and we are not used to it. 2020 was like it from April to August pretty much daily. Temps in the 90s happen almost yearly. THe river in Bristol is a tidal estuaury so goes high and low with the tides, like the Thames in London. You also missed the 100's of balloons in the air which (obviously) happens during daylight. You got there for the closing

    The river was at low tide, Bristol has one of the strongest tidal currents in the world

      The Uk has a number of these, you need experienced pilots to navigate the waters.

    No mention of the world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol designed in 1831, a turning point in the history of engineering, or of the SS Great Britain once the largest passenger ship in the world, both designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Bath is a beautiful city.

    Bad luck on the balloon fiesta, they normally have a mass ascent, though the Thursday is the night glow so is always a smaller one. However the heatwave made the thermals too dangerous for the balloons to lift off this year except in the mornings. So you would have to have been there for 7 am!

    • @HSLR
      @HSLR  Před rokem +1

      That explains it! Yeah we went on Friday since we heard there was no mass ascent on Thursday and we were surprised when they also didn’t lift off on Friday! But that makes sense about the heat. We were lucky to actually see them in the distance the next morning when our flight was taking off 😅

    Charming video, so glad you are enjoying some of the most beautiful towns in the UK. I live 10 miles from Winchester ( where Jane Austen wrote, revised, and had published all six of her treasured novels) and just 4 miles from Chawton the 17th-century house in which she spent the last eight years of her life. It is now a great museum - and across the road is Chawton House owned by her brother - it now houses the research library of The Centre for the Study of Early Women's Writing, 1600-1830 . So Hampshire and of course Bath, great for Austen fans

    Fun video! We love the architecture in Bath, and actually really enjoyed the sally lunn buns!
    Bristol has some great architecture and food and my two favourite things are the cathedral and the Clifton suspension bridge 👍👍.
    Thanks for sharing your adventures. Sorry that the balloon festival didn’t turn out as you had hoped. . Cheers! Dara

    Heatwave - and drought. Hence the river is low, but the Avon is one of the UK’s biggest rivers and has a tidal bore that people use for mad surfing. Hence one minute there’s no water and then the tide comes in … nobody’s pulled a plug or turned a switch.

    They didn’t give you the demo of Roman cleansing by oil and strigil? Standards have fallen.
    I first went to the Roman Baths when I was 7. I wasn’t impressed by a visitor’s dog who peed in the water from a great height, but you weren’t allowed to drink the waters even then as it’s so full of sulphur.

      Any other cultural differences that make you mad? Apparently you are still sore about losing the colonies.
