  • Both male and female managers say it's hard to give tough feedback to women. Perhaps they should learn from legendary coach Geno Auriemma, who in 30 years of leading UConn's women's basketball team has won a record 11 national titles. He speaks to WSJ's Shelby Holliday about how good leaders can find success by dishing tough-love feedback.

Same attitude can be applied to mentoring guys. Nobody is an idiot. You may have done something stupid, but you can learn from your mistakes. Tough but never denigrating.

We used to say, "Tough on performance, soft on people." People issues (bereavement, dissolution of a long-term relationship, illness, etc.) require a gentle touch from a manager regardless of what gender is involved. Similarly, performance issues require a firm hand regardless of what gender is involved. I had instances where 70% of my employees in high compensation white collar jobs were women, and I never minded it one bit, because they are often much BETTER at separating people and performance issues. They rarely think you're being unfair if you call them out on performance even if their personal lives are in a tough spot, whereas men often think you should cut them tons of slack when their lives are going rough. A manager can be sympathetic while an employee works through some issues for a while, but in the long term performance always has to come out on top.

Spot on. Many male managers have shared, in private, their concern that women will cry if managers give them tough feedback.

Female managers have told me it's a pain to give tough feedback to women in the workplace because often they cry. "Don't send me back out into the office with my mascara all smeared".

Women want to be treated like equals while at the same time be treated special like a little spoiled princess.
