I'm back. I loved every review from you🥰. I loved seeing women who look like me and go through the same things I go through on tv. It was refreshing to witness a couple break up, become better people and reconnect again. That has literally happened to two my girlfriends and they are now happily married. This was the most realistic 'black girl doing normal s***' show and I enjoyed every bit of it. Hope to see more from ISSA!!!

I didn’t think I would like the finale but I actually loved it. It seems like they all got their happy ending. I love that the explored other people for Issa and Lawrence before they finally got together bc it shows that they really want to be with each other. The scene with Issa and Molly after the wedding had me crying. They are the true love story of the show and the broken pu**y reference at the end was the perfect way to end the series. Issa didn’t do anything wrong. Nathan and Issa aren’t married or engaged. She is free to talk to other men as long as it isn’t sexting. Why in the world would she ever tell Nathan that Lawrence was back in town? If their relationship was strong, it wouldn’t matter if one of their exes is back in town. At the wedding, Tiffany was pregnant. Kelly already would have had her kid because it was one year later.
Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention that there was no traffic when Issa was driving through, and Lawrence asked her how was traffic and she said 'the usual.'
Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention that her mirror self didn't come out at the end.
Also, Tiffany and Kelly relationship really shined to me in this episode. I liked how Tiffany asked the man 'so how did you two meet?' And when Kelly giggled ,she shuffled Issa away so Tiffany could investigate how serious the relationship really is.
Also, when Molly came out and Kelly told Issa 'she looks so happy, you did a great job.' I love the subtext there. Brilliant writing.
Issa calling Jah 'a man who knows what he wants' while the camera is on Lawrence. Brilliant writing/directing.
And Tiffany's reaction when Kelly announced her baby was exciting. Because now Tiffany and Kelly can relate about motherhood together and it was something Tiffany could never have any of the girls be empathetic about.

I really enjoy your reviews and that you point out things that are not necessarily obvious like the pole between Issa & Nathan representing Lawrence being the block between them that kept them from getting closer in their relationship and the clothing choices the characters wear. I felt like Issa’s speech about how things were all in her head & the only thing stopping her was her was also a metaphor for her relationship with Lawrence. I really enjoyed her heart to heart moment with Molly after her wedding. I wish they would’ve used the whole season to explore the finale’s storylines, but overall I was pleased with the final episode because I felt like a lot of what was touched on was very true to life and I can really relate to it. I also noticed in the final scene with Issa putting on her lipstick in the mirror there was no mirror Issa talking to her representing that she’s finally stopped over thinking things and has become “secure” in her insecurities.

  • @privacywanted434
    @privacywanted434 Před 2 lety +20

I was so disappointed in the finale. I love how everyone wrapped up except Issa, it felt like she settled. I felt like we don't really see any growth in the Issa/Lawrence love story. Prior to the wedding, we see Lawrence blurt out he loves Issa but then when Issa calls him on his birthday, he goes out to smash whatever girl he's with at the time, seemingly not caring about Issa's call. It just felt so disrespectful and the timing so off. Even in the end, Issa didn't seem happy to me, just stuck, like it made sense to go back to Lawrence because what else is there to do?
I loved your point about security never being a place where someone arrives but I do think one can be confident. One can make a choice and pursue that choice with all their might... I don't feel like I saw that ending for Issa/Lawrence. I wish they kept Issa and Lawrence single or had Issa with a new man at the wedding and a scene that show Lawrence and Issa truly support each other's life but have moved on from each other.
Maybe the ending would've been sold if it wasn't rushed but I find it so hard to believe.

Congratulations Shawnda on great and spot on reviews throughout the seasons.
You really spot on details that we easily miss. I didn't even remember the painting. Also, I've heard that red means power/victory in television, and Issa was dressed all in red in her last work scene episode and when she came home to Lawrence as a victory over everything 🙌🏾. She had the same hairstyle as in the dream of the end of season two when she said goodbye to Lawrence. I love love the way the episode came in full circle even if it was rushed. Also, As you said, the ending made more sense with Issa and Lawrence ending up together. Although, this season was what it was, I loved the theme of "not everything happens the way we want them to and in the time we wish them too" but if we can just give ourselves chances and try to work it out, we are able to find ourself happy in them. People that are not happy with Issa ending up with Achy Lawry are immature in my opinion and didn't really peeped the lesson the show gave. Love and growth conquers all, we create our own happiness. I don't think Issa with Lawrence is a struggle love because not all healthy relationships goes smoothly at first, sometimes there are real issues before getting there because of our own selfish ways. That's a great depiction of life. The best moment was Issa leaving the episode with no mirror her finally secured in her insecurities.
I think the season would have been best if each episode were an hour. I didn't like that some stuff were missing like Issa and Molly reconciliation from the end of season 4. This finale should have been at least the last three episodes. I'm mad we didn't get to see Molly's mom funeral. Another regret was not having a scene between Kelly and Chad, they were both so funny. However, I'm proud of every character growth. Insecure is my all time favorite show as a whole and was very well written and directed. I love it for the culture and I look forward to many more shows like this. Did y'all notice the blue couch in the documentary, Issa and Lawrence couch in season 1? 😂 So proud of Issa Rae. Why do you consider Lawrence and Issa struggle love? They had issues in their relationship when they both were stuck career wise. Lawrence was struggling with getting a job and Issa hated hers. From what I remember that was the only issue they had, and their lack of communication which is very common. They didn’t really get back together until season 4 and it was brief because of the baby. They never really got a chance to make it work until now. I think her relationships with Nathan and Daniel were more toxic than Lawerence actually.

I’m glad Issa and Nathan came to an end he was emotionally unavailable from jump he disappeared on earlier seasons, when she cried on his chest he just walked out on her and when they had disagreements he wouldn’t speak so good riddance but Lawrence was toxic too lol I’m conflicted with the ending it felt rushed but ultimately I’m sad it’s come to an end 😩🤷🏽‍♀️….

Love the show but I can't say season 5 was my favorite. They gave us a season worth of content in an episode. 30 minute episodes or not they had time to tell each of these stories better. Show us Kelli meeting her new boo. Show is Taurean and Lawrence propose. Show us Molly's mom's funeral. They rushed it and there was no reason to.

I was satisfied with the ending. I wish we could have seen a proposal or even better, Issa in a wedding dress walking down the aisle towards Lawrence as the final scene. That would have been icing on the cake. I'm glad they deaded that whole Nathan narrative, it was boo boo from the beginning (no real chemistry). I agree that they did a great job wrapping up everyone's story, even Tiffany's fake happy story lol. Looking forward to another high quality black love series to come. 🥰🥰

I believe for Issa Dee and Nathan to could have had a real chance if he at the least verbalized what was going on with him when Issa realized he disappeared at Tiffany's baby shower. No matter why he left she was unable to reestablish the feelings that developed when they first met. Their relationship was more natural and fluid, but once reunited she was unable to connect with with to the same extent when they first met. Once Lawrence was able to forgive Issa it was just too late for Nathan

Nathan should have left, he needed it. We could all tell that she did not like Nathan like that and her heart still belonged to Lawrence. Getting into a physical altercation over someone who isn't feeling you like that isn't good for your mental health. I kind of wanted Issa to get over it with all of the time that has passed, but I'm happy that she's happy. We all have to live in our truth and do what's best for us in the end. I am happy to have experienced this show and this was a game-changer for Black entertainment. The end of an era.

It’s annoying that issa still seemed to be sad and not completely happy with how things ended up but honestly that’a life sometimes and I appreciate how realistic the show is. Low key I was happier to see Molly at her wedding than Issa and Lawrence making up. I guess their on and off relationship just wore me out. Omg I loved the ending! I was not a part of the Lawrence hive at all lol but I'm glad they ended up together the way they ended up. They were both mature, successful in their careers, and open for love. They were honest finally with themselves and made it work.
I agree that the last season could have been filled with more of what happened in the finale. That would be my only critique too.
I loved Nathan until the last episode. I don't like that he still was ignoring Issa and ghosted her again then tried to come back again. He doesn't seem to have grown too much. He did take his mental health into account but didn't handle the relationship the right way. I'm glad they broke up once and for all. I never thought I would say that lol.
I agree with you about Lawrence fitting the relationships in Issa's life better than Nathan. I noticed at Tiffany's party last week everyone was dressed so nicely and then there was Nathan. Everyone's career seemed to be upwardly mobile. And then there was Nathan. He stuck out like a sore thumb. He might have felt that way as well. He wasn't a good fit. He was sweet but looking back on everything, it definitely wasn't going to work in the long run.
I definitely wanted to see more of Kelli's story with her new love and baby. They didn't even show her as pregnant really. I wanted to know if Tiffany was ever happy in Denver. I wanted to see both Taurean and Lawrence propose (Issa had a big ring on when she was putting lipgloss on with her left hand lol) I wanted more but I'm still happy with the overall result of the last episode. 😊
I will truly miss this show. It was so awesome seeing two dark skin black women thrive in their careers and love lives. They got it all in the end and that is something we rarely see happen for dark skin women on tv. That made me so happy. I love this show and will miss it so much. I wonder if they have merch. 🤔 I want one of those sweat suits the crew was wearing in the documentary.

Was this series a culturally and geographically-centered provincial setting or an economic class setting. I could rationalize its coherence as an amalgam of attitudes into this quilt of a series. As an amalgam quilt, it provides a survey of different aspects as an exhibition. Whether my view reflects me more than this series' narrative which I find as a niche reality, at best.
I see and appreciate the individual angst but not a depiction that's representative of that age cohort's black experience, in general, beyond its niche presumptions and assumptions for our engaged credibility for that cultural milieu presented.
