Raccoons, bobcats and foxes are your best bet for egg eaters. You have a beautiful yard and should feel proud of what you’ve accomplished. Where there is life there is also death no matter how hard you try. 💝

I was thinking skunk or crow. It's odd that it left exactly one egg. Raccoon definitely a possibility - It would be interesting to put a game camera up and see if it comes back for the last egg.

I have a hummingbird who made 2 nests under our awning (1 on the large wooden dream chaser) near our sliding door. We keep her and her eggs/chics protected. She has a special calling when there's an intruder like a squirrel or cat. She is on her 3rd brood.

Awww! Must be so cute!! I have a Robin friend who comes back every year, except for last year when all that smoke came down from Canada wild fires. He/she? Takes baths in the bird bath just 10 feet away from me and listens when I talk, even sometimes it gets closer than that. It had been a fledgling in our yard and grew comfortable with me, they say birds remember faces and people.

The circle of life. Hope the duck can still set another nest this year. I felt the same way a few years ago when the squirrels got into a robin’s nest in our tree. 😢
Your garden looks amazing again this year. Our city is on level 4 (highest) water restrictions this week so I’m saving whatever grey water I can to hopefully get them through until the problem is fixed. The neighborhood squirrel keeps digging up some of the plants. Mischievous little so and so. Oh well covering them up wherever I can and hoping for the best.

Thing is a neighbor feeds them in her garage and lets her cats roam all night!

The neighbor's adopted cats have been sleeping in 100 degree heat in another partly shady, uncovered raised bed and I've started leaving water out for them. We have tomatoes in quantity there for the first time ever, probably in great part due to them relieving pest (i.e. others who eat what we eat lol) pressure and tulle over the fruits. It's rough out there and what comes around goes around. I do my best to be kind. After all, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

The diversity in your garden is amazing. I love how you call them "a form of life"- I was originally from Jersey too and called them something else. Probably a raccoon got at the eggs. The garden seems pretty intact, so the fencing must be keeping out deer and ground hogs- its really difficult to keep out a determined raccoon- probably more than one. I love your optimism and perspective- it can be really frustrating dealing with these tragedies, but it's all part of the gardening discipline. Move forward, concentrate on your successes, learn from your mistakes and don't take nature too personally.

I had a robin build a nest in one of my espaliered apple trees. It broke my heart one morning to come out and see her nest all ripped to shreds and the broken egg shells on the ground. I suspect a raccoon was the culprit. On a happy note, we have another robin's nest on a blade of our outdoor ceiling fan with hungry babies and a nest of barn swallows in our alpaca barn. We usually get those every year. It is so wonderful to watch them grow so fast and then fly off to start their own life in the garden.

I work in a walled garden and it seems that once ducks lay eggs they will come back ever year to try again, mallard ducks seem to be set in their ways and could potentially try again. If you see the males hanging around it probably means they want to try again. I note these wildlife events in the sowing record as its a nice addition to look back on, including first butterfly spotted, house martins, stoats etc etc. If you have a wildlife pond in your garden its an excellent way to entice ducks and its super cool to see the baby ducks follow mama when they hatch.

I grew the best Bak Choi, Napa cabbage-one at 7lbs, broccoli and now cauliflower this spring. I started mid April under a low tunnel. I have two beds with heavy clay soil that brassicas love. It was a lot of work covering, ect. but great turnout. We harvested broc already. Our season in WI is too short to succession sow and once the hot day hit the Bak Choy was ready to bolt.

My dad calls Tuck "that vegetarian dog" when we watch your videos. No way young boss would do that. Sorry you had that happen its kind of a bummer but remember, your garden does a lot to restore some balance to nature

Aw geez, sorry about the duck nest. We had a similar thing happen a few years ago where the ducks made a nest in our front garden and one day our dog spied it and chased the duck away and when she jumped out of the nest she broke the eggs with her feet. We felt so bad about it. :(

Great video. No grapes for dogs, folks! They can cause renal failure even in small quantities. ❤️

I wonder how old you are. Your skin and energy says below 30 for sure man. I found you years ago on a gardening kick, let it go for the last two years. You were the FIRST person I looked up when I got started again. Bless

Aw poor ducks. Circle of life I suppose. I have been finding dead squirrels in my yard lately- I think one of my neighbors is setting out poison or something.
    Love Tuck

If you have several gray squirrels, they will go after bird nest. Once I got rid of the squirrels, I finally had birds.
