@@EnnuiOn 100% agree but it’s funny that you call Japan creatively-restricting, as I see them as one of the most innovative and creative new-wave bands of the late 70’s/80’s…but seeing as how experimental he got on much of his solo work, I could understand how being in a huge bc pop band would be restrictive on an artist as creative as Sylvian, especially having to cooperate with musicians as equally genius and creative as Karn, Jansen and Barbieri
Its 2 bad he couldn't keep his dick in his pants, when he stole mick's girl, he also couldn't handle everyone else were so talented, whereas all he had was his looks
They should have got this cat on guitar for the studio versions....love what they did live guitar wise. Insane talent on all fronts. Micks bass lines and sound in general non stop deep rubbery bass licks. David's emotive vocals and those wild synths...Japan was too damn sick.
My friend and I were still at school in October of 82 and couldn't afford tickets for both Depeche Mode and Japan at Newcastle in the same week. For some unknown reason we chose to see Depeche Mode. Japan broke up just weeks later. We were gutted. I still am. To make matters worse I later worked with a guy who was there and said it was the best concert he'd ever seen☹
Peter, You just highlighted my two fav bands of all time ! I saw DM twice & their ' Blasphemous Rumours ' gig, is probably the single greatest large scale indoors venue, I have experienced!!! But, I have never been able to witness 'Japan' live - oohhh what an incredible loss !!!
"For some unknown reason we chose to see Depeche Mode". did you hear the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"? that was me! :D sorry, mate. i feel your pain!
Every time I see this gig it seems more and more that Japan were at their absolute pinnacle in terms of live playing; highly technical arrangements performed with faultless musicianship, and still enough spare to create a hell of a visual spectacle.
I remember buying 'Oil on Canvas' vinyl as a kid and playing it constantly. Note Mick Karn literally gliding across the stage at 0.46. I met Mick K when he stored some of his artwork in a North London storage facility in 1999. Decent fella.
2:24 Mick Karn's clapping even outdoes the rest of the band! Kidding ;) Love this tune - repeatedly come back to play it and savour every epic component. Ohhhh to hear Micks bass track solo'd from this.
I can't even walk and chew gum simultaneously, how Mick manages to play fretless bass, do his gliding moves, look as cool as all get out, *and* clap is beyond me. You are missed, Mick.
I thought that was funny. I don’t know if you noticed during their Swing video that Mick rolls his eyes after the line “I’m someone you’ll neither know nor care”.
Wow what fantastic memories. I did two nights in a row of this concert at Hammersmith Odeon. Make me smile to see it again. Japan will always be my favourite group.
Mick's floating about the stage due to the brilliance of his bass 2:23, and the epic drum playing of Steve, wish I could of seen them, to be 20 & in 1980 would be great.
The influence of Talking Heads 'Remain In Light' is quite evident here. Certainly when they recorded this they were moving away from the obvious Roxy/Bowie influences. Very funky, rhythm-driven and minimal chord structure.
Just fished out a ticket for Japan at Leeds city hall . It doesn't give a year but it was £4.50 ! I remember Blamange were their support . Great times.
Ye gods,Its still a lesson in how to be ridiculously funky without ever mentioning the blues. Mick Karn and Steve Jansen came at it from somewhere else, and Richard Barbieri`s keys are just Musique Concrete- never a note, its all about the texture of the sound. Tsuchiya just went at it live...Only Andy Gill from the Gang of Four played distorted guitar in that way-Hard as nails on glass.
I wonder if Japan was influenced by Talking Heads REMAIN IN LIGHT album or if Talking Heads were influenced by Japan for Remain In Light? I know both bands were influenced by Roxy Music. I loved the 77-82 time in music. Very innovative
I wonder what today’s kids would think of this? Would they appreciate the originality of Japan’s unique sound and great musicianship? After the crap they’ve been spoon fed their entire life, I doubt it.
been listening to japan since i was 16, im 18 now. japan has its fans amongst people my age but barely mentioned even amongst those into more "alternative" music. the individual and collective talent of the group is something simply just not seen today- and regardless most people my age would focus solely on the aesthetics !

I could watch Mick Karn dance across that stage forever💕💕💕
If you listen to all there albums from beginning to end then your know how good they were
Mick Karn one of the best bassists that ever existed.
Jesus that bass. Absolutely brilliant track. I could listen to this on a loop all feckin night ❤️
You wouldn't be the first...
The Great Mick Khan, R.I.P
Karn has the otherworldly presence and charisma here. Even when he just clapped 2:25, he definitely stole the show.
I wholeheartedly agree❤❤❤
Jaw dropping drumming from Jansen.
Quite
This band is a beast!!! The vocals, the drums, the guitarist, the bass, the keyboards!
初めて聴いた時はオリジナリティに圧倒されました、今聴いても最高です。
It’s too bad David doesn’t have a bigger appreciation of the music Japan did. It’s incredible! The fact that they inspired others is a compliment.

Masami Tsuchiya, i believe his name is. Jansen, Barbieri and Karn all collaborated with hum throughout the 90’s, he’s crazy good.

Steve Jansen is an absolute legend on the drums.
It's a shame there isn't a lot of bands around like them these days
Isn’t a lot?! There isn’t any. 😂
I love that shuffling that Mick Karn does with his feet. He almost looks like he's on a conveyor belt or wearing skates.
thats why they call him mr tippy toes. LOL> JK> I love M Karn. God save his soul.
Rip Mick Karn
Definitely agree. The way he glides across the floor..effortless & I've seen him do it live on the Tin Drum tour 1981.
@Arena Grenade Yeah, that's a good way of describing it.
It is a well know fact that Mick Karn invented the motorised Heelys shoe.
I absolutely adore Mick Karn but can we all appreciate Masami's little jump at 4:06 👏
I love it!
Great guitarist way ahead of his time
Only recently discovered Japan. Mick Karn is absolutely incredible as a bass player.

How can a tune so funky be played so casually? Too cool :)

MASAMI TSUCHIYA😊

What talent
Japan were the best band of my generation
Still aew
Surely there must be some genius who can isolate Micks bass.
I've heard tracks by the Who with John Entwistles bass isolated.
Masami Tsuchiya out doing David Rhodes on the guitar distortion from the album version. Awesome.
Amazing guitarist sounds a bit like Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp when he's playing solo in this song !
Good looking young Japanese guy.
Did Rhodes also play solo on Still Life in Mobile Homes?
Sylvian played guitar on the lp version. Rhodes only play on Still Life if they played it live when he was their guest guitarist.

Probably one of the best ever bands to be ignored
Only the greatest bands sound the same live as they do on vinyl or disc - I still love David xxxx
The only live part was Steve's drums, everything else was studio overdubs
TOTAL AWESOME !!!
The guitar playing reminds me of guitar on "Scary Monsters" by Bowie. Love it.
David is a beauty form
one heaven
I never fancied him when I was a teenager. He wore too much make up...yet, I liked duran duran.
Looking at him now, I think he is gorgeous.
I love the makeup! To me it shows that they are unique and creative. They are not “average Joe’s” you could meet anywhere.
Watch that Mick Karn go! and Masami shredding!

Masami Tsuchida learnt to play guitar in Jupiter, just like Hendrix.
I agree with you, but actually, he had a practice of playing the guitar on the roof of his house to avoid punishment by his father.
