    Went in a hardware shop about 15 years ago and seen a gearwrench set of sockets on sale for $20 aud. I like when I have a protruding bolt, i can use the grearwrench set and makes time for me. It was definitely the best $20 I ever spent in 53 years. Be buying this tap now die set today!

    Outstanding job on your video. Those wannabe bloggers should take a look at your video before they make any kind of a review. Your script was fantastic, great articulation, short and to the point yet covers everything one needs to know about the product under review. Subscribed and liked and pressed the bell. Thanks for all of your time and work you put into this great video.

    Craftsman and Gearwrench both used the same company to manufacture these sets and many other tools. Even five years back they were the same. I have the craftsman version of this and it's all the same except the handsets are smooth shapes and my sets are not ratcheting and are very junky feeling. I knew I was getting Sterrett tap wrenches eventually anyway and bought the Craftsman set as a starting point. The Sterrett wrenches are a treat but pricy. I think those retching Gearwrench ones look very usable.

    Just got the 75 piece set for Christmas and have a question I hope someone can answer.
    The die adapter has a black ring that when twisted, makes 3 rods move in/out of the middle. I've been told this is to help center the piece you are threading. However, this mechanism comes _after_ the die. Meaning that to center something prior to cutting it, the piece would have to be inserted through the end opposite of where the die is inserted (the silver part that snaps into the wrench).
    The picture on the box, and a few video clips I've seen, show it being used the other way; the piece being threaded touches the die first, and _then_ passes through the centering mechanism. This looks like the correct way to use the tool and how I assume it should be.
    But my question is, if the tool is used "die end first" then what purpose does the centering mechanism serve? In other words, if the threads are already being cut slightly off axis, I don't see how the centering/guide rods would help.
    So what is really the correct way to use this die adapter? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm new to using these types of tools and I'm trying to learn! Thanks for any input!

      I know this question was posted four years ago but maybe this will help someone.
      I have always used the adjustable guide on a die stock:
      1. to align with threads that I have just cut to keep proper orientation as I proceed.
      2. if I am chasing smeared or dirty (existing) threads, I insert the bolt through the guide and into the die to keep it aligned and not over-cut the threads. Be sure to flip the die over for this.

      Had the same question. Wish there were clear instructions included.
      I used the 3/8-16 die today but couldn't go from the guide-end since the rod wasn't long enough to catch the die on the other end. Would make sense to go in through the guide-end first to get the alignment right and then catch the die.

    The only problem is that its ratcheting. You are going to be flicking that switch back and forth ALOT of times. It eventually wears out. Plus it throws off how many counts of a turn you are doing into the metal. You have to go so far in, but then you have back it so far out to break the chips.

    • @ranz9688
      @ranz9688 Před 7 lety

      Some people just do not get it. The key that making this set stand out with others is the ratcheting mechanism.

      lifetime warranty....been using ratcheting wrench's all my life (half a century) never wore out a ratchet. you only need to back out using bottom taps....see how helpful knowing what you are talking about can be...

    This was a great video. I have been leaning on this set and a 76 piece irwin set. I am just a bit worried about the quality of the taps and dies in this set. But you seem to be pretty content with what you have there it looks like. This set does have a LOT of dies and taps compared to the other brands sets. They can't be worse than harbor freight tap and dies right? Those handles are a big draw point to. I think I will go with this set when I get the funds for it. Again great video!

  • @RipRoaringGarage
    @RipRoaringGarage Před 3 lety

    I have a huge problem with the ratchets. They are pointless for softer metals, and will cause a LOT of frustration. There is no fixed position, which you would assume would be a thing for cutting threads. Not everything is steel. Aluminum will break if you dont alternate back and forth a lot, especially with crappy high impurity stuff you buy (not like I ordered good stuff but its 2021, its what we get).
    So now, Im let with a part that is too long, so either I run the risk of cutting to the right length, threading, and risking it break off completely, or leave the part be, non functional...ie, screw it method. Either choice is not appealing.

    Is it true the hex dies are for chasing only as the round die are for making threads?

      Incorrect. I have the husky version of this, 92 pieces I think? The hex dies work very well to create new threads.
