    Q. So what’s behind nursing shortages? A. Shortages equals higher profits with greed and profits above human lives. The only thing that remained non profit in health care when it went for a profit system in 1973 were the wages along with decreased benefits and junk insurance for health care workers. This system defeated its purpose years ago and it’s more dangerous now than ever to be a patient in a hospital. Hospital CEO’s are making dangerous cuts in housekeeping while firing senior nurse just to replace them with lower paid graduates who are usually full of themselves.

Thank you B.L. for saying that about younger nurses because it is so true. Also, for all of you who wonder what the other reasons might be: 1. terrible wages 2. workplace politics 3. ageism-where experience does not seem to matter anymore 4. patients and their families who are rude and disrespectful and on and on and on. For a profession that is mainly dominated by women we get paid horrible compared to men in the same profession. People don't respect women anymore, or did they ever really? So sorry folks but there will NOT be enough nurses to take care of you when you get older. I will never count on other people to take care of me and neither should you. The amount of people that are in their 80's and 90's that are full codes instead of DNR's is crazy. People want to live to be 100 whether that life is full of quality or not.

@@hannahbee3348 Narcissism has taken over nursing and the bar has been lowered so low, health care is attracting the worse of the worst in nursing with the cocky and arrogance narcissistic types who are a liability and take their workplace mobbing and bullying to include patients. Our overall state health report card in Illinois is 78%, comparable to the average state board passing rate. The nursing school I went to had a grading scale of an F for grades below 79.6%. It’s now 5 points lower and the students are sent to clinical nursing during their most critical semester when 2/3’s of the class fails. They’re being sent to ICU and neurology care for 12 hour shifts as clueless students. The way nurses are being treated today is a nightmare and a national disgrace. Senior nurses are targets for unjust firings to make room for the clueless underpaid graduates. Most grads today are not willing to learn and they have no clue regarding the state’s public health rules and regulations. More hospitals and nursing homes have reached the lowest the point, profits matter more than people and people are dying needlessly because of the greed along with the apathetic health care workers who replaced more experienced and knowledgeable workers. Doctors are performing procedures unwarranted in their patient’s care for profits. We had foreign doctors who have the nerve to tell their Medicaid patients, their lives aren’t worth the price of a test.

California is the absolute best state as far as staffing ratios and regulations employers are actually made to follow and not allowed to ignore unless authorities are investigating a site for a few days! Florida's ratios are horrible, and if there are any regulations about that, they are ignored most of the time. Won't allow unions here, not under DeSantis, as he is paid off by all the big business lobbies to keep our unions and keep business regulations and laws to a minimum, to keep profits high for the business owners, CEOs and shareholders. So pay is also very low here, while cost of rents and mortgages and all kinds of insurance and just cost of everyday living has skyrocketed. Stay in California and hopefully make it work by living in cheaper area, then commuting to higher paying area and work all 3, or 4, shifts in a row and maybe find another nurse or worker who can let you sleep at their house or apartment close by, for small fee, for those nights, to avoid long daily commute. Try everything to make it work where ratios are best!

Hospitals are pimping insurances for more money and making the $$$ but they keep refusing to pay nurses what they deserve.
I wonder if the so called unions for the nurses are really fighing for the RNs?
I thought with certainty that covid would have changed and made nursing better salary wise. I was wrong! Yes. It was temporarily.
Until nurses fight and speak up, nothing will change. Sadly, it has not in the past 28-30 years.
