The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred on April 26, 1986. It was the largest accident in the history of nuclear energy, which led to significant economic losses and serious environmental
consequences.
As a result of the accident, a large amount of radioactive substances was released, including isotopes of uranium, plutonium, iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137, as well as strontium-90. This led to contamination of the territories of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
Significant resources were mobilized to eliminate the consequences of the accident; more than 500 thousand people took part in this work. The population was evacuated from the 30-kilometer exclusion zone around the nuclear power plant, more than 115 thousand people.
The accident had a huge impact on public opinion and politics in the USSR. It became an event of great socio-political significance.
