This wouldn't have been possible without modder Roy Batty and most significantly, modder Ludo, who was the first to document the most esoteric information included in this video. He also looked through the 9000+ word script and gave me some much needed advice, so thank you so much dude! Also thank you guys for supporting my channel! Honestly the project purity scene hit home for me. He made up a task just so dr. Lee could live. I also really appreciate that they gave Liam Neeson more 'notes' than whoever voiced Lee. I wonder if that's the case for all of his dialogue? He's pretty high-profile, so I wouldnt be surprised that they were more careful with direction and scripts

      This is a habit of Bethesda's I've really disliked since they started with Patrick Stewart in Oblivion.
      Celebrity voice actors are a pox, and maybe they could have hired more than six VAs if they weren't constantly hiring celebrities who probably cost more than the rest of the voice acting put together.

      @@passingrando6457 The opening lines of Oblivion are memorable and epic. The issues with Va seemed to improve with each game. Skyrim had a lot more of them and I had no more issues with VA in Fallout 4.

    • @passingrando6457
      @passingrando6457 Před 2 lety +80

      @@KonniBel yes, and I'd have sacrificed that epic opening for a higher quality of voicing in the _rest of the game._ It's like getting an expensive appetizer and then leaving the restaurant to go eat fast food.
      As for the rest, Skyrim still had only about 10 non-unique voice actors, after getting _multiple_ celebrities (Vlad Kullich was great as Ulfric, Max Von Sydow is great but was wasted as Esbern), and Fallout 4 karked up the entire dynamic dialogue system in favor of bootleg Mass Effect dialogue with a female main MC performing way below her normal skill and a male VA whose performance ranges from "bored" to "smoked enough weed to kill Seth Rogan".
      Also, I forgot Sean Bean in Oblivion, who also did well, but not nearly enough to justify what his likely share of the voice budget was. At least Patrick Stewart knocked it out of the park, Bean was just "good".

      I agree, it does sound more interesting--but I could also see a story-related dilemma involved, too. Namely what TriangleCity noted: without the sense of urgency, it wouldn't feel like there's as much of a reason to actually leave the Vault. Going off-topic a bit, but it's kind of the problem I had with New Vegas with the whole Platinum Chip/hunt Benny plot of the first part, in that it felt like it required me to have a frothing-at-the-mouth revenge motive for advancing the story when I just survived by such a freak series of coincidences that it could only be called a miracle! Even the terms of the Mojave Express requiring their Couriers to retrieve lost and/or stolen property felt flimsy and tacked-on as a means of filling the plot hole. Still feel it's a good game, even it does get over-hyped.

      That has to be the answer, especially given his description of the way things "tweak" the ending (e.g. slides for Agatha's Song and Head of State). He's definitely telling a half-truth in that there are around 110 total slides (separated into several segments) in the base game's ending slideshow, so accounting for all the combinations of slides could lead to over 200 discrete 'endings', even if in reality it's just 3 versions of the same ending.

    • @zekun4741
      @zekun4741 Před 2 lety +14

      i think so too. remember, if you outright wipe out a bunch of settlements and their population, then the ending slides will depict those acts with the protagonist walking through the settlements surrounded by corpses. so there's definitely very many different combination of slides that can come up, it's just that as a whole they don't really mean much.

    I wonder if the "240 endings" thing refers to the total number of combinations of ending slides and voiced descriptions of the player? That still seems like a lot but when he said the part about "if you do this or not this, you'd get this other tweak to the ending," it seems to suggest something like that might be the case. Plus it would make sense that they had 60 total combinations before deciding to add an entire other slide with 4 variations to multiply it to 240.
    Regardless, it still seems like a ton and I don't even know that it's possible that there are 240 different end slide/VA combinations currently, but lean towards there not being that many.

    The original idea of escaping vault 101 seemed so much more RPG like, why force a linear brute force sequence in a RPG? "because it's cool boom boom..." Bethesda have really lost touch with what RPG are supposed to be.
    Could have had cool options like provoking the radroach infestation for an easy escape with bad karma.
    Do various tasks for the technicians if you have science and repair or find some materials and escape through a forgotten hidden access. Get good karma for preventing the radroach infestation by doing dangerous maintenance repair
    Just forcing your way by killing the security officer that has the card and then fight your way out, if you befriend the tunnel snakes they would give you the baseball bat and some armour. Bad karma for being an ass
    Just use sneak to steal the card and bypass everyone, you get some extra valuables that you steal.
    Use speech to convince the security officer to give you the card and fight the last part, or even better, find some dark secrets of the overseer and then use speech to blackmail him and get out of the vault without any fight.

    If there was anything I could keep. It'd be the Fawkes logs. At the very least. I know it's small. But It'd do a lot. The other one I'd go for is super mutant dad.

    Hey in the last version of TTW (which is 3.3.1) restored the dialogue in "Waters of life" but it looks kind of janky because they're in there default positions with the rotunda closed and Doctor Li beside the panel (or could be a mod I installed if someone can confirm this I would appreciated)
    Edit: And they also added the holotapes of vault 87. When I did find one I was like "Wait a minute... this wasn't in the original FO 3..." and this video confirmed my suspicions

    I’m glad you talked about the “200 Endings” claim because that has driven me crazy for years! There are barely three endings in the game and apparently those few were late additions, so where does that number come from? Since we know for certain there were only 1-3 narrative endings planned during development, I think he meant something else by “endings.”
    If I had to guess, I think Todd Howard may have been talking about what images were shown during the ending narration. Maybe they were trying to implement a system to show the places you’ve been with a variety of possibilities based off of what you did, accounting for the 200 endings as combinations of images. I’m not saying anything for certain but I think it’s possible and that it was either cut, scaled back, or is just too nondescript to notice.

  • @Kaelruen
    @Kaelruen Před 2 lety +2

    Posting all my thoughts on the topics as I go through to help the algorithm (excellent work as always my dude)
    Though I understand cutting down the intro for pacing reasons (the reactor objective seemed particularly unnecessary), the ability to have tangible gameplay choices in how you leave the vault would have done a lot to alleviate the biggest problem with the game in my opinion. That problem being the lack of multiple resolutions or avenues for player expression through choices and gameplay.
    The dialogue between dad and Li in the purifier was genuinely fantastic. My theory for why it was cut involves the door being open for the scene to play out, meaning a player could have theoretically soft locked themselves in the room. That and the room was reasonably crowded and gamebryo pathing around multiple NPCs looks silly at best.
    The battle for Rivet City would have been amazing as a fully fleshed out concept but considering how many sacrifices to make NVs Hoover dam even function or the number of bugs still littered around the liberty prime sequence it definitely was a smart choice to axe.
    Stacey would have gone a long way in humanizing the citizens of Lamplight. As it is it feels a bit too jokey for me and having that bit of grounding would have made that levity feel earned, as well as helping justify to the player why these children act like assholes to grown-ups.
    The voice acting for the audio director is genuinely quite good and having those logs would have put the vault on the level of vault 92 for me, a little additional context makes a series of murder tunnels far more engaging.
    While the idea of having dad be transformed and fight you is definitely a little cliche the whole story is full of them and with proper execution it could have been harrowing. It also could have given the player a personal motivation to accept the FEV from the Enclave beyond just being evil for its own sake.
    Again, fantastic stuff, this historical archiving is so important for video games and I look forward to seeing what you cover next

    Maybe oasis was meant to be explored as a means to figure out how they made a lush green forest magically appear in an irradiated wasteland.
    I could theorize that oasis was meant to have a G.E.C.K. instead of harold as its source for why it grows so well (since canonically the geck can do that)
    It couodve beena callback to fallout 1 where you can find a geck in multiple areas to bring back to vault 13
    But who knows. All of that is theory and left on the "cutting room floor"

    i'm pretty sure the 240 endings came from those small segments in the ending that apear depending on quests completed and choices, There's a total of 29 segments. Now all the different combinations of ending slides that could come up are what he refered to an "ending" in that interview. So one ending is when you do the main quest, sacrifing yourself, have blown up megaton, have returned the violin to Agatha. Haven't done the maths myself, but it's the kind of exponential grow that can give very big numbers from what are essentially slightly different versions of what is mostly the same ending.
