    I have torn off literally thousands of roofs of every kind and replaced them with almost every kind of roof. Never once did i come upon a situation where a house was leaking due to nail placement . You need to experience that yourself

      OK...Ever seen a nail pop? Same thing. Put 3 foot of snow on the roof with the warm from the home turning it into slush and the nail directly below it. Most times leaks happen 3 to 5 years after the install.

    Finally somebody that talks about this! I literally pull my hair out watching dozens of CZcams videos with people bragging about their speed and they are all nailing in the keyways or (butt ends). I'm a roofer in Seattle Washington and I promise you anything like that is not going to fly over here with the amount of rain we get lol. Thank you for showing these idiots on CZcams the mindset of a professional 👍👍

  • @MadMetalShop

    Owen corning says nails to be places 2 inches from ends of shingles. 4 to 6? That's too fat from the edge. If each full shingle requires requires at least 4 nails according to Owen corning on their shingles then you'll have to stack all those nails on one end. And hope you don't have a steep pitch requiring 6 nails min. 2 inches from the edge is what most manufactures recommend and that's how you get their warrantee to back them.

    • @KNowakSr
      @KNowakSr  Před 3 lety +1

      You're missing the point. The nails do have to be 1" from ends . The other 2 nais spaced evenly. The problem is they put 5 6 or sometimes 7 nais a shingle then the next course of shingles has their but joints over these nails. If you look at some of my old videos I show some nails completely rotted and a hole through the lower course and Ice shield.

      And, if I may, the recommendation for extra nails in windy areas is to place them very near the previous middle nails for the same reason.

    Incorrect nailing patterns in between the 2 butt nails on a shingle creates nails that are to close to the offset patterns butt joints.

    Just making a mess of that roof. Bending all the shingles. I’ve been roofing for 40 years never seen a nail leak.
    Does this roof have a proper underlayment. It should have a felt underlayment. If there having problems with snow ridgevents and those low vents they replaced the ridge vents with are not the answer. They should of installed Duraflo Turbo vents which are higher and stick out of the snow.

      Ive been roofing for 33 years. All types of roofs from hot tar to shingles. Nails rarely leak on a steeper pitched roof and when they do they are easy to spot. They get rusty first, the shank of the nail gets rusty and grows in diameter, then the nail will raise up a bit a push the shingle up some.

      You could nail it like 101111 where the butt joint is at the 0. The first and last nails should be about an inch from the edge of the shingle you are nailing into. Of course this is just a tip. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the bag.

      Instead of redoing a new roof I would have told them to get the Insulation looked at at you should not have that much ice on a roof and and as per installation instructions your nails are to be evenly spaced on the shingle witch puts a nail about 1-3 inches from every joint

    I’m a little confused I’ve been licensed contractor with a 2 million dollar insurance policy and when I install every new Roof I follow manufactures instructions on the proper nailing patter and placement of nails I use owning co. Shingle architecture timberline all types u name it . I just finished 2 roofs these 2 past week instruction s say one inch from end . . Each bundle 30 square all say the same . Or if done wrong void warranty. Is this a insurance job ? Kidding but really I’m confused your saying your saying the nail should be 4 six inches from the end not 1 inch what gonna hold the end of shingle . On the butt joint . I don’t know to believe what your saying or void all my customers warranty on the instructions on each bundle of shingle. They clear state 1 inch from each end . But anyway thanks for sharing your vid

    • @MoneyManHolmes
      @MoneyManHolmes Před 5 lety +3

      They can be an inch from the end, but the next course of shingles should cover that nail by 4 inches. I think there’s a lot of confusion in the comment section.

    • @rotaxrider
      @rotaxrider Před 4 lety

      MoneyManHolmes
      Your right.
      It’s the incorrect nailing pattern of the shingle.
      You can nail the shingle 1 inch from both but ends but the nailing pattern in between these 2 butt nails needs to nailed at a certain measurement or placement so the offset pattern you use or what the manufacturer suggest keeps the butt joints away from the nails.
