I can definitely see the similarity in a couple of scenes from the first episode of the squid game. Regardless of the similarities, I think both do an excellent job at striking fear and shock in the audience.
The concept of squid game was developed way back in 2008, got rejected by 10 production houses. Then finally less than 3 years ago, netflix picked it.
I’d say Squid Game is more influenced by Battle Royale, because it’s somewhat similar concepts in some aspects just different in its own rite.

Just watched this yesterday. Absolutely insane! Kept me on the edge of my seat for two hours straight! I highly recommend it, but at this point, you'll need a Region 3 DVD player to watch. I hope there will be a US release soon.

+isaac cruz I'd love to read it, but haven't had the funds to check it out yet. If the difference between the film and manga are anything like the differences found in Takashi Miike's adaptation of "Ichi the Killer" then I'm sure this is probably substantially different from the manga in many ways.
+isaac cruz i've both read the manga and watch the film. they're really different, and the film is fine. really recommend both but watching the film first would be better since you would not set the expectation too high

I agree with this opinion. I am Japanese. The performances of the actors in the squid game were excellent. But to be honest, squid games didn't feel anything new because there were so many manga and anime like this in Japan for a long time. So the story was boring.

The movie is based on a manga and its a pretty standard genre, there are so so so many similar stories. Very hard to say that squid game is based on this rather than just another one in the genre.

lets be real this movie isnt that good, but it does the "child game but lethal" premise so much better than squid game, the characters are cliche but at least they are smart and proactive and dont just randomly get through the tests by sheer luck at the last second.
Just further proof that Japan doesn't know or care to cater to a wider audience. This is a textbook case of brilliant idea but flawed execution. Squid Game knew how to tell a story effectively.

The other was begging to be an anime, but got turned into a movie instead. But i do agree, Japan does not cater to a wider audience. But you can't belittle the execution of the other since it came first. Its like saying that Neil Tyson had better execution of a space show than Carl Sagan, which is BS considering that Carl Sagan was the first space science show host who was actually a scientist. I can't cite other examples, the one on top of my head is Chris Bumstead for some odd reason.

And liar game who has the exact premise with squid game (broke player willingly take part in the game to pay their debt and stupid protag) was made in 2005. The writer also cant proof that he really made it in 2008 since he didnt make it public by that time. I even read somewhere that they changed the script pretty recently. So yea squid game is not original at all. But i gotta give him some respect to make a survival game series very beginner friendly. The 'k-drama' feels make squid game very easy to watch for even a 40something colleague of mine who never aware that this genre exist before. This way many 'commoners' attracted to asian survival series/movies like alice and battle royale.

@@TheFlowerbeast I like Korean movies and shows (my favourite tv show of all time is Running Man) but just like other Asian countries quite a few of their ideas and/or look of movies and shows are 'copies' or 'westernised' versions of Japanese entertainment.

As an American, I love that "Go to hell" in Japanese sounds like SUCK IT!!
I saw this movie about a month ago because it was on a list of "Must-see Japanese Horror Movies" and loved it. I must admit at first I thought "What the hell is this?" But as I kept watching, it became more compelling and intriguing. It's a surreal, weird, and wild ride, but one worth taking. Also another Japanese movie to watch within the same vein as this one is TAG from 2015. That movie was insane!

KissAsian is kinda problematic because of a lot of pop up ads but if you have something on your computer to combat them or if you just clear them all out whenever they pop up, you should be able to watch the movie. They both have English subs too. Let me know how you like it after you have watched it. I'm curious to know what you thought about it.

Nah death/survival games are just a VERY popular trope in Asian media. X Games and Signal 100 are similar movies to the two that you mentioned as well.
the director of squid game actually faced financial issues and he wrote squid game from his experience of the length people would go for money. as well as that this genre of survival/death games is also a widely popular thing in the asian media.
im not %100 sure but i believe i saw somewhere that the script of squid game was written in 2008 but no one thought it was going to succeed of was a good enough idea at the time.
