In another manga/anime called Kono Oto Tomare! there's a similar character named Tetsuki Takaoka, but even witht him it's just like you said, not much exposure but one of the best side characters.

Ryu is the most manliest of men in that manga. He knows what he wants and and the confession scene is so good. I have to say I got more invested in their relationship that Sawako's and the other guy. Personally I thought Sawako was too good for him. She has much higher specs.
The other guy? Really? Kazehaya and Sawako's relationship is perfect. Saying she is too good for him shows that you either didn't watch the series properly or you are just hating a character and their role in the story for no apparent reason.

For anyone wanting the episode ref, this scene is actually S1E7. Post the friction caused between Ayane, Chizu, and Kuronma. I spent several minutes just now skimming through S2 (at least 3x per episode) to make sure I hadn't overlooked it befor zeroing in on the reference to, "the 3 of them [the girls] no longer fighting getting along better than ever"

He confesses eventually, she goes through a whole crisis of identity there are two chapters that go DEEP into their childhood lore and how trauma has shaped ryu (he lost his mom due to a car accident when picking HIM up from school) and the only who notices he (8 years old) has changed and even though looks ok because he’s stoic she realizes he never smiles anymore so she starts making onigiri every night to him but he keeps thinking it’s for his brother and a lot Of his insicurities show up, eventually he tells her to give up on holding on to seeing him as a brother and whenever possible makes sure she sees him as man (very physical) and she eventually does but is conflicted because everyone around them but her knows she has always loved him above everyone else she eventually confesses back he immediately kisses her but she is now conflicted cause if she cheers him on for baseball he will move on to college and she’ll stay but as soon as he loses the semifinals and wants to give up she does the thing he does often of offering to cheer him up and tells him she will always be there no matter where he goes so he can go back to him forever she just want him to follow his dream. They cry, he proposes, they decide to have 9 children and run his dads restaurant together as soon as he comes back and it’s HEAVILY implied they’re doing it also you don’t understand how onigiris are RIDICULOUSLY EMOTIONAL AND ROMANTIC FOR THESE TWO I strongly suggest reading the manga because just the version we get of ryu after she finally starts liking him is emotional and open and smiley and amazing - a super well developed couple

Buys Chizu a pink preserved flower (pink rose) for no reason and when she asks why he bought it he says he doesn’t understand why he just know it looks like how he sees her 2. He explains why he likes her by PUTTING HER HAND ON HIS NECK so she can tell that while he always looks calm his heartbeat around her is always crazy 3. Kid ryu has always known she wanted tohru and you see kid him being miserable about it but still protecting her always 4. He makes a point countless times to let her know that just MENTIONING that she liked tohru makes him angry and she thinks it’s cute 5. Whenever she says something like “I like u” or calls him cute and he does something romantic she freaks out (even tho they’re together and he goes bubbly face and goes “chizuru is cruel”) 6. The “it’s implied they’re doing it” it’s a hilarious pin:ryu scene where pin tries to call Yoshida a tomboy weirdo with no sensuality and ryu corrects him making him freak out and start screaming YOU DID SOMETHING DIDNT U TELL MEEEE and unlike kazehaya ryu just goes “:) bye” srsly the manga is soooo slow but soooo respectful of everyone’s growth
