I can see why Ramsey like Josh. He's a horrible chef but amazing cook. Just a ball of raw talent that goes against all logic.
this is so well said, i agree!
That's the most amazing way to describe Josh and I aspire to a similar level somehow
I disagree. A chef is fundamentally a managerial position, because they're the person in charge of the kitchen. In that sense, Josh is an excellent chef because he manages his kitchen very well (in that the videos get a lot of views).

"You would never want to cut a carrot like this"
*Cuts to Josh cutting a carrot like that*
Haha I lost it when they did that
Try guys moment
lol
the editing back and forth between the right way and the josh way is giving try guys without a recipe and i love it
Yes!!
I was going to comment this exact thing
Lily as a test proctor is terrifying. Keeping you on your toes by sprinkling in random nonsense ("Yes chef!" "That's chef to you"), but still absolutely knowing her stuff.
I love how she's opened up. I feel like she was almost confused why she was there in the beginning but now she's tossing jokes with the oldies
@@heavymetalbassist5 I say this with no irony, Lily is by now one of my favorites in the Mythical Kitchen
@@groofay same, she is my favorite. She's an amazing cook, she's sweet, but also she can make really good jokes.
Her knife skills are sketch, the way she wields the chef knife, swiping it through the potato instead of rocking back and forth, would lead to carpal tunnel in a month in a real working kitchen.
The cut to Trevor after Josh asks if the dough is supposed to be like pancakes and Trevor says you massively screwed up if it's like pancakes is perfect.
It's almost like they recorded that part after and knew what to say

"o-okay"
I love it when Trevor is in teaching mode. Just calm and patient.
pastry trevor: calm, cool, collected
content trevor: high on chaos emeralds
Legitimately wish they'd let him bake more! He knows his stuff!
You can tell he wanted to start into his gibberish, then snapped back into "oh, right, this is a real cooking bit".
@@stephennetuyeah, I know he bakes a lot but they don’t show it. They just say, “Trevor made this [insert pastry/bread here]” and I wish they’d show him making it. Plus that would make videos longer which I would love.
@@stephennetu He knows his stuff because yes he's talented and good but also went to school to become a pastry chef!

@@osqtinPardon the pun! 🤭
Hey-o!!! 😂 @@osqtin
that’s chef to you
but she pronounced brunoise incorrectly
Seeing the crew actually showing off their legitimate skills without flubbing everything to be funny was actually pretty cool. They have a lot of skill and precision that they don't usually let shine like that.
It's interesting to see everybody snap into *academic mode*. The professionalism and confidence in what they know is awesome to see
in josh's defense on the cream puffs. he's said in the past he's not a baker and we know his personality by now to know he doesn't have the patience for baking. he's definitely got the heart and talent even if he never really learned the technical skill. with some prep, genuine effort, and not being goofy, I have no doubt he would pass
Culinary school tests you on baking things even if you aren’t planning on being a baker.
don't they also instruct you on how to do it properly in culinary school? We had the instructional videos, but maybe Josh didn't? @@pissum420
@@pissum420Yeah but I had a guy in my class who was just like Josh, the second we were in pastry class he just was NOT interested in it at all and it was a light switched off in his head. Meanwhile he was a great student in all the other classes. Still passed but just put in no effort, didn't retain anything..So I get what OP is saying.
Well also culinary school is just dumb, and like the teacher said they want them to do things "perfect, by the book", when cooking is more about flavor expression and experimentation. Josh already wins because he's a great chef and didn't have to waste money getting a culinary arts degree lol
@@TheOnlyGhxst Again, argue that both are valid. But in culinary school they are teaching you methods for fine dining...to work at places that may have or have the potential to have awards. And part of this is perfectly uniform knife cuts, clear soups and broths etc.
Now I agree, after school I went the other way and focused on building up flavors, expression and experimentation. Which arguably makes tastier food.
Nicole: “Basically just be careful and patient and you’ll do great.”
Josh: “IF I GO FAST I DO GOOD”
Josh not going to culinary school just makes me more in awe of his food and talent 👍
In the introduction to one of Gordon Ramsay's cookbooks, it says being a good cook requires confidence more than anything else. Josh has that in spades!
Not to mention he got Gordon's approval!!
It makes me feel better about not going to culinary school yet seeking out a high proficiency in cooking
@@benamisai-kham5892 as we're continuing to learn. You can become a topb level skilled individual in any path long as you put in the work
as someone who did the pastry side of culinary school, josh's cream puffs are pretty in line with what we saw coming out of the savory side of the class
I can do both if I put in effort, but I never did seem to quite excel either way. Looking back on it, I was... adequate. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home about either. Every once in awhile, I did put something really solid out there, but my classmates could kick my ass up and down in the kitchen. I went when I was older and didn't work in the industry, so I was in classes with people who already had restaurant experience. It was eye opening in a way.
Prior to culinary school, I'd spent 17 years in call centers, mostly tech related. During team potlucks, I'd put real effort into the food I was bringing, and I was repeatedly asked by my co-workers why I wasn't a chef. So when time came, I was your better than average home cook now pitted against people who already knew what they were doing. I did fantasic when it came to the academic side of things because my brain is wired that way. Culinary math, yields, recipe conversions, menu planning, food safety and sanitation, no problem at all. Practical use was another matter.
I don't regret it though. I learned a hell of a lot. I just ran into a time/money issue and didn't get to finish my baking classes, so I'm a few credit hours short of finishing my culinary degree. Maybe someday.
I enjoy the way Nicole explains her process so tenderly.
Forreal the only time she's been tolerable in the recent past. The always-on-ness from most of the crew has become annoying, but she might be the worst offender.
Yeah Im sure she youtubed the process right before shooting lol. Such a phony.
All bits aside, submitting yourself to be judged by someone as amazing as Alan Kang is terrifying. Not to mention Lily who's even scarier. Props to Josh and kudos to the team.
this is honestly why I love Josh so much he's the everyman chef, impatient, and doesn't always use the proper techniques but makes some great tasting food
the best type of chef, go get blasted with him then when getting back to the crib he asks "you hungry?" then proceeds to make a masterpiece with the shambles that was your pantry
Loved the part where Josh was struggling with the dough and there's just a cut to Trevor quietly doing his thing as if it's no big deal!
Josh is giving me the vibes of the type of person that wasn't prepared for an exam, makes one mistake and goes "f it all" and goes rouge
The artistic pans between the chefs teaching the correct method and Josh doing the EXACT opposite are *chef's kiss*
Josh absolutely failing at the baking portion of this shows the talent and smarts of Trevor
Trevor also previously worked at a pretty well-known pastry place if I remember correctly
My SAHM made choux pastry so easily. It's actually not hard. I did a Baking and Pastry Arts degree but I could make it as a child.
@@chaosic08 He worked for the guy who invented the cronut if I remember properly from previous episodes!
There's a reason culinary and pastry are two separate branches in culinary school!
Cooking is an art, baking is a science. Baking is SO HARD to get right. I envy people who can bake anything well.
I know Trev is normally silly goofy boy, but I enjoy seeing him genuinely bake. I'd love to see more
"Slow and steady wins the race"
Josh: "Now we gotta go! Now we gotta go!"
Aannnddddd its broken!
I feel like if Josh prepped beforehand and didn't basically just give up halfway through, he would've done very well.
i was very disappointed that Josh decided to just make a joke out of the whole thing rather than actually try. He even joked about defending his ego in the video "if i reject something before it rejects me im safe" -- as he is actively doing that thing by joking through the whole thing.
Not really
@@dakineprotoss yes, but its honest. Like, Josh is a fairly (outwardly) confident person, and he succeeds at things much more often than he fails (on camera at least) but I am sure that for a minute there, he was in full panic mode, and not just for the purpose of a bit. He went into his comedy act as a coping mechanism.
@@dakineprotoss”very disappointed” lol what are you, his mom? This was just a light hearted bit of entertainment, it’s not a real test. Lighten up.
@@redeye1016 I was disappointed in how entertaining it was. I would found it more entertaining if he tried more.

"Would a wolf peel a carrot?"
No, it would eat the rabbit that ate the carrot.
Trevor: "This is very temperature sensitive"
Josh: *regularly lights things on fire, turns the heat to high, literally just exploded Canadian bacon in the microwave*: "This is fine"
Seeing Josh infiltrate the Try Guys has been an awesome combination of chaos to watch. And I'm here for it.
French cooking just seems like "Perfection no matter the cost" because there has to be a decent amount of waste when you're cutting exact shapes
Goes into the broth.
You save the waste bits to make stock or broth, so nothing is ever truly wasted.
@@shadypalmtree2989 in a perfect world yes. But in the actual world there's tons of waste by only doing things perfectly.
The baking part at the end had major without a recipe vibes 😅
Especially when it cut from Josh doing something, to Trevor saying “if you do this, you’re screwed” 🤣
@@minimomominnie yess haha
Is anyone gonna talk about the fact that Josh tried to play off a 64% as a 'B'? 🤣
They are grading on a Kim Kardashian style curve. 😄
I LOVE this- it’s always great when they showcase Lily, Nicole, Trevor, (and V!)’s talent and technical skills.
This video is a testament to the validity of different forms of learning- yes culinary school teaches important technical skills, but it’s not a requirement to make good food.
The stark contrast between Josh's chaos and Trevor's calmness is sending me
" If I reject something before it rejects me... then that keeps me safe" Preach Josh.
Josh's pasty cream being "pretty good" considering he just dumped the egg mix into the milk is awesome since there is so much pressure to not scramble the eggs yet, "just go for it" also worked.
it was a very risky move though
I love how chaotic and silly Lily has become. Looking back on when she first started appearing on MK is such a wild contrast, and I'm here for it.
Comparing and contrasting Trevor in his happy peaceful place baking to Josh's chaos demon panic mode is just *muah*
Consistency is the key to being a good chef, and Josh is consistently screwing up. Thus, Josh is technically a good chef.
I love the cuts from the professionals saying what not to do, to Josh doing exactly that
Very Without A Recipe
I feel like a really under appreciated skill in the kitchen, or anywhere really, is to hire really good people. There’s where Josh really shines. He doesn’ have to be able to do everything by himself, because he knows how to hire the people who do. And he knows how to keep them motivated to stay on!
"I'm in fight or flight" cut to trevor being serene was, dare I say, chefs kiss
The sassy, skeptical look that the instructor gave Josh when he said "Perfect profiteroles" at 28:16 is everything 😂
The fact is Josh isn’t the serious chef kind he’s a guy with way too much talent in cooking and he loves to cook for fun and that’s why we all love him he makes cooking look fun and his energy is perfect.
And I love the fact that when the judge said “I think with enough help around you.” The helpers came in xD
I'm in love with "They don't give you stYLe PoINtS in culinary school but they SHoUlD!"
Mythical Kitchen has just been absolutely killing it. I'm so glad Mythical invested in this project.
Lilly's knifework was so satisfying to look at. Weirdly magical
Chef Kang was my chef instructor during my time at ICE. A awesome chef and the best instructor. Cheers!
"Thems is ham coins, chef!"
I trust this man with food.
The way most for these tests require some sort of patience and Josh (like most people) just simply didn’t not have any is so funny
As someone who went to culinary school, this is both satisfying and so frustrating all at once
It's okay Josh, you'll always look like a chef next to Emily.
Josh is a real chef in the same way that Bill Nye is a real science guy and everybody loves Bill Nye
"My ham coins exploded." 😂🤣😂🤣
Gonna need a behind the scenes video to this of the real time reactions of Nicole, Lily, and Trevor while Josh is working.
College is collecting the most and best knowledge into 1 location and then providing to students. What Josh has done is searched for his knowledge on his own. It's not saying that his route is better than college but he did what he would in class...focusing primarily on what he wanted for his career. College adds a lot of forced electives and 1 yr classes that is general knowledge (what SHOULD have been covered in high school), so effectively saving money and focusing time on specifics.
"Providing to students" is such a gentle respectful way to put it compared to the actual experience.
“If I reject something before it rejects me it keeps me safe”
Josh speaking for all us messed up folks right there
This has the same energy as try guys WAR but expert mode. Love the different culinary skills being tested and would love to see more
I love that Marcel, one of the craziest Top Chef alumni, was an inspiration for Josh.
Josh will always be my favorite chef even if he isn't a chef
"My ham coins exploded" - out of context I cannot imagine another profession where... huh... maybe urologist?
the cut from "I'm gonna use my paring knife here" to Josh palm striking a clove of garlic is just chef's kiss
The chef is generous in his scoring hahaha
the bit where Josh' dough looked like pancake batter and it cut to Trevor saying that if your dough looks like batter you screwed up gave me without a recipe vibes so much it made me lose it laughing
All purpose potatoes are very elusive, and hard to catch 😂😂😂😂
When Josh puts the bowl on the ham coins tho. "Warm my ham coins with the bowl". This killed me.
This video has told me nothing I didn't already know. Josh is a valuable member of the team. And we all know the roll he plays.
Nicole is so deliberate contrasted with Josh’s frenetic “sink water”
Josh made it onto the Tonight Show!!!! I'm so proud of him! Keep up the good work Josh!!!
josh has never claimed to be a pastry chef. in fact he always claims the opposite.
Strong Without a Recipe vibes where they explain what to do or not do and immediately cut to Josh doing the what not to do thing.
19:50 Josh talking to himself "temper the milk into the egg yolks , dO iT gEntLy jOSh" is giving strong Bruce McClane energy 😂
I think one of my fav moments from this video is when Chef Alan Kang handed Josh one of the diced Onion pieces that was irregular to look at and he quite literally eats his mistake.
Woah did not know Trevor went to culinary school! :o
He worked at one of the top French bakeries in LA
Absolutely love the chaos in chef josh's cooking 😂😂❤ i like to think he cooks like this off camera too, just seems like a fun chaotic free spirit and im here for it. Also love how he has the whole "not doing the proper way but getting the right answer" (except the baking)
Josh trying to figure out the choux was really funny and i bet Trevor really wanted to jump in and just do it
It was beautiful seeing Nicole, lili, and Trevor serious and composed in their element. Josh (or whoever's idea this was) really shined the light on them.
Lily: Don’t do this
Nicole: Don’t do this
Trevor: Definitely don’t do this
Josh: Does that
i love all those moments of them saying exacty what not to do to and then the cut to josh doing that exact thing 😂😂
More of this! I love learning and also enjoy watching Josh frantically keep up 😂
"would a wolf peel a carrot if he found it in the wild" is the most Marcel thing I've ever heard lmao he's always on brand
You never claimed to be a trained chef and for normal people, a carrot tastes the same no matter how you slice it. A bit of patience with the shoux and it would have been a home run as far as I'm concerned. Excellent chaos. And Lily... Terrifying. Chef's kiss!
Whenever I make a hollandaise I cool the clarified butter to room temp so that it melts into the sauce, it definitely takes longer but I've never had it break or scramble
*everyone else going about things as normal*
16:01 Trevor: “wHy HeEwLoH tHeIr mAgGot” 😂
this just proves that josh is a perfect op culinary anime protag or someone based shokugeki no soma on josh
Josh definitely went for entertainment instead of trying to do anything right and it was worth it
I think it would be incredible to have Josh actually go to culinary school and do a series - honestly, I think he would have so much fun and gain an even heightened sense of confidence. I don't think he needs it, but I think it would be incredibly enriching for him and would make really awesome content.
What Josh might lack in the technical skills, he would make up for the sheer balls he has to come up with the most interesting ways to use ingredients and I say that accounts for something.
I love how Alan is encouraging while he's critiquing. Lol
"Sperm tails"
I feel like I was watching Josh do a technical in The Great British Baking Show. I would love to see Trevor do the same. Give him ingredients and tell him what the outcome is. Good luck!
Josh absolutely snapped on this one. Sick with it.
refreshing content, loved seeing you guys roleplaying as chefs
It wouldn't be Josh if he didn't palm heel strike, for the perfect minced garlic! Paring knife, never heard of ya
If Josh wasn't an agent of chaos, he could have done so well.
Also, I always forget Trevor went to culinary school.
The image of all the mythical chefs together in a classroom in culinary school is highly amusing.
Nicole made fun of Josh sifting his paprika onto the eggs benedict, but it looked better than Nicole's presentation.
But props to Josh as the boss for making a video that basically showcases his employees' technical skills to the detriment of his own. Despite all the chaos and bravado on camera, it really speaks to his humility underneath it all.
Why do I feel like Lily would be really good at performing an autopsy
In the most complimentary way possible
I keep replaying the start with Lily. Dead. She is terrifying yet hilarious. 😂❤
This is an awesome episode! Some flashbacks (PTSD) to my line cooking days but it was fun!
Also Lily...damn perfection with the knife cuts ❤
This is wonderful and I hope there's more in this series! I love learning from the "real" chefs!!
This episode is brilliant haha, you guys kind of summon all of your content in one single episode and it is awesome to watch it and funny AF.
