Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (REAL piano track - final version)

  • This is my third and final version that represents the real piano track of Bohemian Rhapsody. I believe I was finally able to create the complete “DNA match” with the original piano track that was played by Freddie when he recorded the song in the studio.
    The main reason that I created the final version and put a lot of effort into analyzing the original piano track is simply because I wanted to respect the original. This is what Freddie actually created, this is his actual work that is in the original song. I personally see his piano track as a work of art that represents the foundation of the song.
    It took me quite some time for the complete analysis of the piano track. I was listening to the track over and over again. On some parts where I had doubts I even used special software that allowed me to slow down the music, so I could hear the combination of the notes more clearly. This final version reflects also the smallest details that always make an accurate arrangement really difficult because they are hard to notice:
    Chord inversions: Freddie used different inversions of the same chords + mostly there are “normal” chords, sometimes there are “octave chords“.
    Omitted notes in triads: I could hear that sometimes Freddie used “normal” triads, sometimes he used only the root note and the third, sometimes only the third and the fifth etc.
    Omitted notes in the 7th chords: sometimes Freddie plays 7th chords with the 5th, sometimes without the 5th.
    Uneven loudness of the notes: sometimes it was difficult to determine if a specific note of a chord was played or not because there are parts where the bass is much more powerful compared to the specific note in the treble. This means that the bass sometimes overpowers the treble notes to the point that one specific note can become basically almost inaudible (overpowered by the louder note).
    Harmonic overtones: those overtones in Freddie's recording were also a problem. Freddie’s white Bechstein had quite a few overtones that were pretty noticeable and sometimes it was difficult to determinate if the note was actually played by Freddie or it was just an overtone (sympathetic resonance). You could actually hear “additional“ notes (especially the 5ths), but because they were of course much less audible (and often inconvenient) you could make the conclusion that those notes were not played by fingers and therefore are just result of sympathetic vibration.
    Here you can watch the documentary about Bohemian Rhapsody piano track (Inside The Rhapsody) where Dr. Brian May is talking about different sections of the piano track:

    DISCLAIMER: I don’t own anything. I am not the author of the song, it was written by Freddie Mercury. I have absolutely no economic/financial benefits from putting this video on youtube. The only purpose of the video is to share it with people who appreciate Freddie's work of art.

    This is probably one of, if not the most accurate piano track of Bohemian Rhapsody that wasn't played by Freddie. Like you, I searched for the most accurate version of the piano track for me to learn, since I also prefer the original over everything else. I considered taking the time to listen to the tracks and recreate the original piano track myself at some point, although I don't think I need to do that anymore thanks to this video (which was amazingly recommended to me by the CZcams algorithm. Would you mind making a tutorial video? Or a sheet music file download? And if you ever find any inaccuracies in this video, please don't hesitate to make another update, for a final, final version.
    Edit: Now that I've discovered your channel I have subscribed after watching your other Queen tracks. Could you please upload the sheet music for all of them, but if you can't, then please at least Love of My Life, We Are The Champions, and You Take My Breath away (and of course Bohemian Rhapsody)?

    • @siberiantiger344
      @siberiantiger344  Před 2 lety +7

      Hi, I'm really glad that you like the original piano part. Comments like yours make me feel that it was worth to do all the analyze. But you have to realise that people like you are in minority, most people always prefer sheet music covers that play vocals. That's why it always makes me feel happy if I see that there are also people who appreciate the actual piano part that is in the original song - what Freddie really played in the studio.
      I didn't write the sheet music, I am bad at writing/reading the music, but I believe that sheet music for Love of my Life, We Are the Champions and You Take My Breath Away is pretty OK (available on the internet).

The Ballad is the only part he plays that's actually backing, so if you'd like, you could use his video to work your way to the full song. I'd suggest looking up "Bohemian Rhapsody Backing Track" to see what the song sounds like without drums/bass/vocals/gutair, and what not.

    Btw: Did you also use the original "stereo" piano track, that has a left channel and and a right channel? Some notes might be easier to determine either on the left or the right side.

    • @siberiantiger344
      @siberiantiger344  Před 3 lety

      Hi, I believe it was the stereo but I really never thought about it. The problem in Freddie's track are harmonic overtones of his white Bechstein. Sometimes you can literally hear notes in his track that you can be pretty sure that Freddie didn't play them because they are inconvenient and not suitable with his style of playing.

      Sorry for the delayed response. You are right about the sheet music. There are two types of sheet music when it comes to the original scores: the ones that are bad and the ones that are very bad. If I will find more free time and if I will be motivated enough I might try to create it - I am not very good at writing/reading sheet music.

    • @siberiantiger344
      @siberiantiger344  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, thanks. I assume it mostly depends on your equipment (piano, software…). I tried many times to create recording without echo/reverb effect and in my cases the piano tone always sounded very thin, empty and without any resonance. Because of this I simply used the effect and it sounds much better now: better harmonic complexity, resonance and richness of the tone. I assume you have better equipment and this is probably the reason you can create very good recording without the effect.

But that being said there's a couple of cords if you listen to the isolated track especially on the Thunderbolt and lightning section...on Very Very part thats NOT a C/ G chord..try G7 flat 5 add 9...no 3rd pinkie on the streched nine... yes very weird chord but definitely Freddie Mercury's did it from what my ears hear on the isolated tracks of the piano

      @siberiantiger344  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, Don't Stop Me Now LIVE version would be probably more difficult to analyse because in the live version you also have the vocal, guitar, drums etc. which means that sometimes the piano notes are not clearly audible because they are completely overpowered by other instruments.

    • @siberiantiger344
      @siberiantiger344  Před 2 lety

      Hi, I learned it based on listening the song (over and over again). I believe the song was recorded on white Bechstein (though I could be wrong, this is what internet says). You can see white Bechstein if you check the concert "Hammersmith 1975". You can check the song Bohemian Rhapsody on this concert. But I'm not sure if this piano is the same piano he used for studio recording.

    • @siberiantiger344
      @siberiantiger344  Před 3 lety +1

      For me the crossover is an easier way. Some people play octaves (G-F, A-G and D-C) only with the right hand. It depends on what is more comfortable to you.

    • @ronb7674

      @@siberiantiger344 Doing the cross over smoothly is the trick. I’ve been practicing it this way and using my right hand little finger as the lower note in the resulting octaves. It does take practice so that the keys are struck perfectly together not only timing wise but also the weight given each note. It’s harder than you (and Freddie) made it look. To me, those particular recurring measures are the theme of the composition and they showcase the genius of Freddie Mercury.

    • @siberiantiger344
      @siberiantiger344  Před 3 lety +1

      @@ronb7674 Yes, at first it might be little tricky but when you get used to it you actually notice that it gives you more control over the "expression" (or whatever the right word is). I agree, those measures are the theme of the composition.
