Hi Tony, first-time viewer, but THANK you so much.
    Obviously, I'm a NuBe.
I'm trying to get ready for the delivery of my first RippleD Node.
I have been a Server Admin for 12 years, but my last interaction with Linux was 11 years ago... :)
    Anyway, thanks again!

Happy New Year Tony! Thanks a lot for this great video. I am trying to install the desktop Display Manager after entering the command: sudo tasksel.
However, I got a list of options different from what you have on your screen on minute 2:46 and I see that I do not have on my list the options: Ubuntu Cloud Image and neither Ubuntu Desktop. Here below the options that I have:
    1. Debian desktop environnement
    2. GNOME
    3. Xfce
    4. GNOME Flashback
    5. KDE Plasma
    6. Cinnamon
    7. MATE
    8. LXDE
    9. LXQt
    10. web server
    11. ssh server
    12. laptop
Which one do you recommend me to install?
Thanks a lot for your precious help man! Very helpful your video

Can you instead of a GUI on the server, use RDP? Keep the server headsless but run the GUI apps on the remote client?
I know how to use RDP with a GUI server, just wondering if the host actually needs a GUI?

    • @baetz2
      @baetz2 Před 8 měsíci

The vnc he used IS a kind of RDP. RDP doesn't run apps, it just streams the UI from the remote server to your computer and streams your input back. If he didn't install the GUI, RPD would show him console.

I don't see any reason to not install a GUI on a server for maintenance purpose, so long as you shut it down after you're done setting things up. If you're able to switch between running and not running a desktop environment, then avoiding to install a light weight one makes absolutely zero sense to me. It just seems like a stupid, purist mentality.
