If you watched this whole thing thank you! I know this is pretty niche, but it's legit been one of the biggest purchase decisions I've made and wanted to have a video out for anyone who doesn't know much about lawn mowers and is thinking of getting an electric one.
Also, we're currently working on a Google I/O travel vlog that should be out hopefully soon (lots of footage) so stay tuned for more regularly scheduled content!

I once saw this concept for a riding lawn mower that had a glass ball around the person that was air conditioned so any debris, bugs, etc wouldn’t hit your face and you’d stay cool. Wish that would happen

The tech inside of the power tool industry will probably surprise anyone who hasn't looked that much into it. The companies are putting more resources (employees) into their firmware than the mechanical design itself. I love the review POV from someone who actually owns the tool, and doesn't do tool reviews as main content focus. I'll watch ever single tool review the The Studio makes if they are all like this one!

Used mowers on marketplace were another reason why I took so long debating this. Ultimately I didn't go that route because I know very little about the workings of an engine so being able to tell if it's a good deal, and then having to do the maintenance afterwards just felt like deal breakers to me personally.

I bought a push battery powered lawn mower from ryobi a few years ago and it is still my favorite lawn maintenance tool I have. The push button start is worth the cost of entry alone. Starts up right away every single time, no more pulling a string 20 times or having old gas you have to drain. Definitely recommend a battery mower.

Getting the mower from Lowes was an absolute challenge. They are not allowed to deliver it in NJ due to the batteries for some reason. I had to get a friend of a friend with a trailer to pick it up with me and Lowes was an absolute nightmare to deal with. They did try to give me the floor model first, but I eventually did get a new one from the back.

I spent 40% more to buy an EGO snow blower. My good experience with an EGO string trimmer and chainsaw gave me confidence to spend that much for it. I value trouble-free quality. It has performed quite well through 2 snowy winters in the mountains. I would like to have a 2nd set of batteries, but the cost has put this off so far. They last about an hour with light snow, and I get the job done, but sometimes I need more. It takes a couple hours to fully charge them. I can use the batteries out of the other tools for a short while. No gas cans or oil changes. I like!

We use Ego products and have been really satisfied with them (hedge trimmer, blower, walk-behind lawnmower), so this review is great to see. We don't have a lawn large enough to for a riding mower, and we bought our walk-behind long enough ago that it's part of the generation that doesn't share batteries with the hedge trimmer and blower...but it's also lasted a *really* long time, so we can't justify buying a new lawnmower quite yet. Rest assured that when the time comes, though, we'll be sticking with Ego.

I have a Cub Cadet XT1 LT42E that I've had for about a year and a half now. I use it all summer to mow my 1.2 acres in Michigan once a week, and finish the yard with about 40% battery left. While driving it's super quiet, but of course the blades are as noisy as expected. Still much quieter than the old John Deere that the neighbor mows with.
In the winter, I actually use it to plow my driveway. I will say, it doesn't plow as well as something like an ATV, just due to the lack of four wheel drive and better traction, but it still beats shoveling by hand. I use the same plow Cub Cadet sells on their site for their gas mowers, and some tire chains.
When not in use it stays in my garage, plugged into the charger.
There's a lot of negative reviews I've seen for the XT1 LT42E mentioning it lasting only a few months, or only a year, but mine has been great so far. I do kind of wish I had sprung for a zero turn mower, but this one still works great for me.

got a snow blower, lawn mower and string trimmer all seem to be working well. agreed batteries are very smart, have had issues with the mower and a lower powered battery in wet conditions, but snow blower has plenty of battery to do multiple driveways works just okay with really heavy snow, but the two stage snow blower would probably take care of that no problem. I'm mostly on these because I have solar with backup batteries so I over produce the amount of electricity I actually use for my electric car so no emissions here 🙂

Im so glad you posted this. I also have a little over an acre with sharp turns, hills etc. ATM i have a gas powered rider that gives me problems every spring (i live in NY BTW). I have to winterize it, get it ready in the spring, charge the battery and hope it starts. Every other piece of yard equipment i have is battery powered and i put the battery in and doing yard work. This is the exact mower you reviewed i was looking at. I have this summer covered, but def selling my gas powered Husqvarna rider next spring and pulling the trigger on this electric rider (i already have a battery powered push mower for small and weird areas). For anyone that is stubborn about gas powered yard equipment, borrow or use someones battery powered equipment and you'll see little to no difference. Your ears will thank me too.

I bought an EGO Electric Mower (not a riding model) a couple of years ago. I used all summer the first year. I then stored it in my work shed. The next spring when I needed to do the first mow for the season, I discovered that not only did the charger die over the winter but the battery did as well! I had to order replacements before I could mow the lawn again. Granted it was colder than normal that winter, but I would have thought it would have lasted longer than it did. I'd still highly recommend the EGO mowers if you need a new mower. Not having to maintain a gas mower any more is well worth the investment.

we got an ego push mower about 3 years ago now to replace an old Toyota mower that we’d had for as long as i remember. it is substantially easier to use for our lawn, especially if you’re ok with your kids mowing. the ego mower is light enough that a 13 year old can handle it easily and the mower has great pull so you barely need to push it around. it’s got just one battery but usually lasts the whole yard if you use the push capability smartly and we’ve not had any issues with it breaking down so far. Conclusion: it won’t make a lazy teen love mowing, but the teen will definitely have less to complain about

Being in the ecosystem is huge cause you can buy all the tools without the battery at a significantly lower price as you mentioned. We have the chainsaw (which is actually a beast, we've felled trees with a 20" diameter no issues plus if you have 2 batteries they charge as fast as they discharge so virtually no downtime other than filling up your chain oil), the push mower, the leaf blower and the 1-stage snow blower (that thing throws slush a good 20 feet, I've never had a snow blower that doesn't just clog up with slush before). I have friends in the Ryobi ecosystem and they love their tools too so you can just pick the brand you want and go from there, quite a few brands even have mitre saws that run off those batteries

love my little ego-system i've built up, honestly completely worth it just for equipment that's relatively so much quieter and doesn't smell like gas --it becomes -*-SO-*- much more noticeable when you've stopped using gas tools-- but they also work great, and haven't had any complaints yet. currently have 2 leaf blowers, a trimmer, a push mower and a snow blower, and for batteries, 3 5A, 2 2.5A and 2 10A (for the snow blower), most of which came with the products.

My biggest issue with something like this is the battery longevity. Having used dozens of different electric batteries for electric snow blowers, weedeaters, drills, vacuums, etc On top of knowing current battery tech and battery trends for regular tech I use too. I just know they're going to need replaced within a short amount of time. So it's tough spending that much on the mower alone with 4 batteries. Then every 2-3 years having to spend another 2000-3000 on more batteries alone if they're even available anymore at all. Especially when I know I can buy a high quality zero turn like a Bad Boy, Husqvarna, Scag, John Deere, Ariens, etc. All for roughly half the price of this and yes I will have gas cost buy I also can guarantee it'll last me 10-15 years no question.

When you said it stops the blades whenever it gets to 5% battery and said you would use it until it turned off. Literally my dad had a DJI drone and used it until it turned off and it landed in a water pond. Whenever it tells you it needs to get back you should because it got so ruined that we had to buy a new one because the repair was as expensive as a new drone.

My Ego snow blower really surprised me. Couple years ago we got snowed in with a 36" blizzard and I forgot to get gas decided on the Ego. Got 30" this winter and that Ego blower had no problem.

As someone whose parents bought a zero-turn mower and used it for nearly a decade on a similar-sized lawn, a lot of the features you discussed about this electric zero-turn are very similar. It's really cool seeing that this electric mower is intuitive for someone who used a similar gas-powered, mechanical version before!

Great review! I learned a lot and loved all the pros and cons you gave. Could you maybe do a durability review in 1 or 2 years to see how it held up over time. Did you research and/or consider an automated self driving robot lawn mower? Thanks and have a great day ☺

I ave the auto-feed trimmer/weedeater, it's awesome. I've had it like 2-3 years now though and haven't had to repalce the string yet (which blows my mind, I've never had string last the entire summer let alone multiple years, but I live on a 1/4 acre not a whole. All that to say, the auto feed was awesome when I used it the first time but other than that I haven't got a lot of use out of it lol. But I think it's gonna need changing this summer.

Very interesting video! I do part time commercial mowing / landscaping with professional husqvarna ride on mowers (petrol) and other handheld tools, some of which are electric. I havnt used a electric ride on mower, simply because petrol is more productive in a commercial environment, could be quite good for certain homeowners though. About having only 4 battery's, i honestly think for 5,000 is reasonable (from commercial point of view), as petrol counterparts are just as expensive, however the batterys being 500 each is crazy, 5 year warranty is really good though. Seems super simple to use for people who dont know about engines transmission ls etc which is good. Anyway, cool Vid would watch all of these cause its interesting seeing a different side of my job.

EGO has been awesome for me as well. I have the snow blower as well as the string trimmer and blower and it’s wild how much quieter all of them are. The noise pollution reduction alone is worth spending the extra money. Additionally, not smelling like gas or oil when you come in is great, too. I’ve watched the promo video for the Z6 tons of times, but my yard is slightly smaller and really gives me pause to spend that much at this time. For now, my mower is the only thing that is left as a gas mower and I can’t wait to get rid of it. Great video, Sir!
Suggestion though - from a tech perspective though, I’d be intrigued at looking at the tech more. Talk to an EGO rep, explore what’s in the Firmware updates and more.

Damn quality control in need. As a 15 year landscaper. It sounds like a home type of mower not commercial. But its a stem into the right directions cant wait for those back pack blowers to be stronger and better than the gas ones but will have to see
