Lip sync animation magic in Scratch

- Bring your sprites to life by giving them moving lip animations and synchronizing the action to a song or spoken audio. In this short Scratch Hacks tutorial, Mr. T rolls out his lip sync toolkit, a Scratch project that includes all the lip poses you need to accurately simulate speech and a special custom block you can use to fine-tune the timing of your animation.

We've created a Lip Sync Toolkit with all the costumes and software you need to create fun lip sync animations in your own projects. Just visit our project page at scratch.mit.edu/projects/8449... and drag the lip sprite into your backpack. Deploy it in any project by removing your sprite's mouth and replacing it with the animated mouth.
There's a different costume for every mouth position, and if you want you can customize the toolkit with your own drawings to create your own unique lip designs. Try googling "mouth animation" to see all kinds of example images online.
To use the custom block, just type the sounds you want to speak into the white input bubble and edit the text by adding the number 5 to add a 0.5-second delay or a 1 to add a 0.1-second delay. See the video for a full tutorial.

Back in the day there was this scratch animator named Dhilly, and his projects have insane lip sync. Huge recommendation to anyone willing to study this through scratch projects.

This is a really interesting trick!! What I like to do as an animator is create a ref sheet for all the possible mouth shapes, and use it as a basis to draw the lip sync straight on the character, and it’ll also sync to the audio!! It’s a bit easier than the method you used but it’s not very good for beginners lol
I'm sure your custom animations look amazing, but we were trying to create a simple system that kids could use in their own projects.

Yeah, we were shooting for a mouth that would work well if transplanted on a lot of different characters. After sweating over this design for a long time, we realize now thta a more cartoonish, less realistic mouth would probably have looked better. Thanks for the feedback!

Lip sync is easy just time consuming
We haven't seen many examples of it being done well in Scratch, and we think more people will be willing to try it if we give them a fast, simple way to execute it.

Wow you have a sharp ear! The background track is only 2 minutes long, so there are spots where we need to weld it together to make the music continuous.

No no no! this is not how you make lip sync you should always make each mouth frame unique and special for example if you add 5 frames for one letter it gives it a smoother and better approach of lip sync but if its 3 or 2 frames then the talking is more faster There are principles of animating and squash and stretch with slow in and slow out is the best way to make mouth movement!
Wow, you sound really passionate about this! Our goal here wasn't to create the best lip sync technique, but rather the easiest. As we explain in the video, young scratchers often struggle with lip sync, and end up just using a simple open/closed technique that's not very impressive. Our technique will give them a good starting point and a better sense of what proper lip positions should look like. I'm sure a lot of the kids who go on to become serious Scratch animators will eventually embrace your way of doing things. In the meantime, spare a little sympathy for the noobs!
