      I've watched a few of your dire Straits reaction videos. Seems like you guys love solid guitar work. If you want to hear some awesome stuff check out kfir ocheon (apologies if I spelt his surname wrong.) Kfir would almost work I think. No singing. He plays guitar over is own guitar as a the vocal melody. And does some covers that sound better than the originals with his twist on them..

      The drummer is actually better than Mark Knopfler on that performance, albeit on a different instrument, but you focus so much on MK, you don't notice the drummer which is sad.

    • @pedroafonso73

      Terry Williams, the drummer at the time (1983) really takes this song to another level, and makes any others version of it boring.

    The solo's weren't acoustic. they were Mark's beloved Red Stratocaster, finger picked.

  • @jrepka01
    @jrepka01 Před 3 měsíci +1

    The song is a tribute to working class bands that play just for the fun of it. Knopfler walked into a place off the street and there was a jazz band playing and he stayed to listen. He requested the song Creole, which they played for him. But the place was practically empty, just a few groups of friends sitting away from the stage and ignoring the band altogether. It struck him that they clearly enjoyed playing music for the love of it, even though most of the bar wasn't paying any attention. A bit later his recollection of that band and that night came back to him as he wrote the song.
    I also love watching the Alchemy Live version, but I reserve a lot of love for this studio version that feels less aware of its greatness as it is carried along by his brilliance on that Stratocaster.

  • @tedhorton6315
    @tedhorton6315 Před 3 lety +1

    @BroAction Mark Knopfler often wrote songs about everyday life and his experiences. He walked into a pub in south London and saw a band playing. He is describing the pub patrons (they don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band) and he is describing the band members (he's got a daytime job, he's doing all right). He is describing the band's love of music without any desire for fame.

    Yes, they're playing in the corner of the room at the local pub. And the singer explains that it doesn't matter whatever else is going on in their lives, when they got on stage at the local pub on a friday night they become the Sultans of Swing - the Kings of Swing; the rest of the. narrative. deals with the 'punters' - the customers who come and go, their reasons why they stay or don't, and how that doesn't matter to the band because. when they play they are musically 'in their zone', kings of the moment as they play.

    I have listened this amazing solo a million times I think. Correct me if I am wrong but I find possible that the first 32 bars got some Spanish influence. Don not understand me wrongly, it is astounding and, in a way of saying, haunting. Positively meaning, of course. I remember that I was 13 when I listened Dire Straits for the first time in my life, ”Lady Writer”, on a pirated casette... let us not forget that we were in 80s communist Romania. I listened it again 15 years later and I was so full of joy... like a child on Christmas Day. Great job, guys, enjoying every view.

    @BroAction - When you listen to Sultans of Swing again, listen to a version that shows the lyrics as all of Dire Straits songs have great lyrics. You more or less got the lyrics. It is about a dude in London who gets caught in the rain and he hears a jazz band playing in a bar
    so he goes inside to get out of the rain. There were not very many people in the bar except for " A crowd of young boys fooling around in the corner, drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and platform soles. They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band. It ain't what they call rock and roll. And the Sultans played Creole. Way on down south in London town". After listening to a version with lyrics, then listen to the most exceptional Alchemy version of the song.

    I just want to share something I learned in 2020 because it’s just too good to keep to myself 😩
    Mark Knopfler did the entire soundtrack for The Princess Bride 😭✨✨

    Yes. It’s about a band in a bar who just loves playing good music, whether the crowd likes the genre or not.
    Oh, there are no acoustic guitars. The little riffs you like are Mark Knopfler finger picking on his electric Fender Stratocaster.

    If you want to hear Knopfler on a long solo, try Telegraph Road. Great review, thank you.

    Mark Knopfler wrote this after seeing a lousy band playing in a pub in Ipswich. At the end of their gig the singer said; "Thanks very much, we are the sultans of swing." Knopfler thought it was funny and wrote the song.
    Everybody seems to request this song, which is fine, but any Dire Straits fan will tell you Telegraph Road has an awesome guitar solo and is regarded as one of his finest works. It's also got a great story to it. You should check it out. Be warned though, it's 14 min long. Studio version first, from the Love Over Gold album, and then the live version from The Alchemy tour to watch a genius at work. Trust me, it's finger picking good.

    Mark Knopfler has some GREAT videos to watch on yt, more so even his interviews about playing, telling his history of music, along with his instruments for demonstration.
