Atif once said in an interview that once they were shifting to a new house, the house was empty. He sang a bit loud (his voice echoed in an empty house) and he got scared of his own voice. He freaked out because even he couldn't believe how good it was.

You can not say that he is not trained . He is a self trained singer . When you have the passion and love for singing with a bit of God gifted voice and the hard working nature that's when you find legends like Atif .
Exactly, he didnt train in "classical music" specifically, but he trained by practising in his own way probably singing other songs. You cant be good without any practise aka rihaz.
In his early singing days he was self trained.. later he got training .....

In music language formal vocal training means that you from an early age or even later age, regularly classically train yourself with a help of a vocal coach.So he is right that Atif Aslam didn't acquired formal vocal training.There is no relation of passion and formal training.
