Hiking the Angles Way Long Distance Trail. Part 3 - Beccles to Flixton. Tarp and Bivvy Wild Camp.

- In this video, I am back on the trail again continuing with my hike along the Angles Way long distance footpath. Carrying everything I need, I am walking the 93 mile route from west to east, starting in Great Yarmouth and finishing in Thetford following the river Waveney on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
In this episode, I pick up from where I ended the last section in the market town of Beccles. Joined by my buddy Martin (vildmark.co.uk) for the first couple of miles, I head off along muddy and flooded footpaths and across wide open fields, passing through the beautiful Suffolk countryside and its pretty villages and finally into Bungay. The river loops here, almost encompassing the town and gave it its unusual name derived from the the French words Bon Isle - this section was particularly beautiful despite costing me my dry feet!
My day ended near Flixton where I found a quiet isolated woodland to call home for the night, my tarp and bivvy giving me shelter from the heavy rain that filled the night.
In part 4, I continue along the Waveney valley heading ever closer to the source of the river, soaking up the sights and sounds and the pouring rain.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.
Credits to Vildmark.co.uk for the drone footage - thanks mate!

In a world of madness Simon keeping it real! Cheers
Well that's true .
Why would I want following?
Cheers Dave 👍👍
I do enjoy a nice Beccles Cake
Congratulations Simon for reaching the 200K+ subs! 👋👋👋👋👋
Thank you mate!
Hi! Simon...Such a nice country you live in. Every little detail has been captured to perfection in your content. Starting from the small gates to the cows. I wish I could camp with you someday. Keep posting such mind calming videos. Good night from India.
You mean Countryside, not Country.
I'm glad you think so. I do too but so many of my fellow countrymen talk it down.
Ditto, from East Tennessee
@@mark.e.pboth are correct, snooty ness sucks 👎
@user-fd2rk7ug5y because our Country's rudderless at the moment - hence Countryside, and that's why it's great to escape and enjoy all the things it has to offer us, and Simon is a top bloke to show us how to enrich our lives in the wild.
Absolutely love a Wednesday when I get this notification 🔔 👌😊
Indeed.
Thanks simon i needed cheering up with one of your videos😊
Loved the comment " good afternoon " to the cows - could not stop laughing.
Have missed seeing you here - I hope you are keeping well and that soon you will return.
It looked like this could just as well have been a CANOEING adventure. Thank you for covering another public foot trail.
😂😂 I could have done with a boat on a couple of occasions! 💦💦
You know you are in a bad spot when it says 'danger, flying golf balls' 😂
I really enjoyed the video thanks Simon. So nice to see Beccles where I went to school and especially Geldeston Locks the village I was born in and spent my entire childhood. The Waveney valley holds a special place in my heart.
Cheers Dave! It’s a lovely part of the region isn’t it 👍👍
@@simonablokeinthewoodscertainly is Simon 👍
Woohoo looking forward to watching this when I get home from work. 😊
So beautiful and peaceful an
area. But hiking in the wet and cold makes me happy to be inside just watching you do it .
Though there are _many_ enjoyable things about your videos, the bits of history you share continue to be my favorite bits. Just fascinating to think of all the past humans, including most of my ancient ancestors, being part of that land and history. Your journeys open a lovely window into my ancestral past.
Thanks Kimberly!
wet feet, rain, flooded trails, and a missed turn. YET the beautiful smile of a man who loves his adventures and explorations no matter the conditions or outcome. Here's to you Mate for another awesome leg of the Angles Way and much looking forward to the next and love being invited along on your trips.
Thank you mate! 😁
The best healthy mediational exercise in the world, thanks for sharing.
Brilliant, shocking flooding... we love getting a notification from you.
Keep them coming fella 😀
My only complaint is that you don't upload frequently enough. 👍
Beauty ❣️🤗 Thanks 🥃🏋️
Great to see other parts of our country, many thanks for sharing your adventures.
Ah, the joy of Martin's little dog splashing through the wet! Wonderful. I enjoyed watching the rest of the journey, too.
Hey Simon. I live in Beccles!!!! It's a beautiful place! Love your kids xxxx
Nice one, Simon.
Congratulations on passing 200,000 subscribers!
I see that Range Rover owners still can't park the damn things. 😁
All the best.
Thanks mate! I think I can genuinely agree with you with this particular driver - the Range Rover belongs to my boss! 😂
@@simonablokeinthewoods I trust a good ragging ensued. 😁
Best notification of the day, just as I finish work.
So cool that you are walking near/through Bungay. It's where my grandmother is from. Married a soldier and moved to the US. Getting to see it vicariously through your video.
Oh wow! That’s a nice link! Was he stationed nearby? 👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods Hardwick airfield was his post.
It's very enjoyable to see your countries landscape. Fun to tag along with these videos as well. Great work, good editing as always! Here's wishing you the best on your next video!
Did the Bungay loop a couple of months ago with my parents, and just so happened to stumble across a great and quite impressive motorbike meet at the pub in Earsham, much to my dad's delight; so much so that he went back to the meet the following month on his BMW tourer!
Another great video as always
Loved it absolutely Loved it👍
200k you deserve half a million. All the best and thank you.
Great video Simon. I loved the history of the area too. Cheers
Looked like a great section. Loved the cows!🍻
Great content simon, your walk looked lovely, if a bit soggy in parts..... great to watch though.
Nice to see the honey stove still going strong.
Ah, one of my favourite cycling stops from my home in Peasenhall. Sitting by the weir having a coffee from the Silo! Lovely clear water and a healthy river bed. Can't ignore the tradegy that happened there but its still a lovely place to just sit and clear the mind
I remember the tragedy that happened there - very sad. Lovely spot though 👍
As always Simon, enjoyed spending this 30 minutes along with you on your hike. Saty safe.
I wish the videos were longer. They are relaxing to watch.
You probably won’t see this message as I’m late to the ’party’. But I’ll comment anyway. Al ways love it when I see you in places I walked/camped too. I think we must have just missed each other. When I walked through to the Licks inn, it was just before it was forced and had to close. I do hope they are getting sorted again now. Such great people and a community run pub! They deserve all the support they can get. That’s often a dinner or lunch stop when we stay at the @threeriverscampsite Always enjoy your trips along the Waveney. Good luck with it all. Atb Paul.
Love the video. The country side is beautiful as always you get some amazing shots. Sorry to see England has had such major flooding. Tires me out just watching.
That’s all floodplain, been flooding for thousands of years.
@@a.y.t.a.s.494I was brought up on the edge of the Fens, they had to raise the land to build roads, the land is so low and flat...
Lovely to see East Anglia and fenland on Simon's videos 😊
11:07 I remember my dad telling me about Black Shuck, when I was little 😁
@@nicolab2075 yep, a lot of roads and rail lines are built up out of marsh, I think part of what Simon walked along in earsham was built up by the Romans, called “temple bar”. The black dog of Bungay can still be seen on dark and stormy nights if you know where to look 😄
Lovely, walking my local paths. You missed a treat with your detour, Bath hills. X
Hello brother.
I’ll head back sometime soon and walk along the proper route 😁👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods I’ll get the beers in, east Anglian bushcraft has a nice camping spot there too.
My, that was a wet one Simon! Really felt for you pulling on cold wet socks. Know that feeling, but usually it’s a cold wet swimming costume for me!
Simon mate I’d watch a front facing view of you walking around for hours . Jjst the sound of your feet and occasional words or none at all
That was a beautiful intro
Thank you for all bro
Great video, dry socks this time, love watching❤❤
Thank you Simon, so enjoy your videos. Looking forward to the next one. ❤
I think Simon enjoyed that chocolate with his rum!
Great video Simon !
I know how the wet boots feel I live Also in EA but on the border of the fens all my footpaths are under water but still enjoy getting the miles in
i have some fond memories of passing through Bungay as a kid on holidays up to Great Yarmouth. Stopped off at a cafe there that did the best homemade sausages. a couple of times my dad bought them in bulk from the cafe owner to take home and cook. and if i remember rightly there was always an impressive floral display as you enter the town. Also i ate my first ever red banana in Bungay. Funny how things bring back the oddest memories, cheers. :)
Love the Locks Inn, been a while since I was last out there...
An interesting walk, thanks. A couple of extra pairs of socks wouldn’t go amiss 🤔. Looking forward to the next episode.
It really is Big Sky Country. Thanks Simon.
In the Swedish army we were taught a neat trick on how to dry wet socks whilst on the trail. Hang the wet socks over your sholders (underneath all clothes so it contacts your bare skin) and during the march your body heat will effectively evaporate the water and dry your socks so that you can change to a dry pair every 2-3 hours depending on how hard your march is.
I really like your walks Simon. Walking is the primal means of human transportation and resonates down the ages. Although, my favourite is the canoe episodes. Looking forward to your next leg (seems like it could be an interesting one). /Karl
Thank you Karl! That is a top tip with the socks - I’ll give that a try next time 👍👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods It works surprisingly well. You'll just have to put up with your smelly socks around the neck. But it also means that you can wash a pair of muddy socks (or other under garments) and then dry them during the day's march.
Lovely to catch up with your video and will watch the next one tomorrow. Lots of flooded areas and glad you had some dry socks.
Great video Simon, as always! Thank you for sharing your adventures!
Brother just found your channel greetings from oregon usa i dont walk well my knees i ride adventure motorcycles trails forest roads camping exploring, there is alot of peace and quiet out in the bush really enjoyed your adventure thanks
Always such a nice surprise to find a Simon video upload. It's been a while, you have been missed. ❤
Always look forward to you .😘👍👍👍
I like your videos because I get to see the beautiful countryside and some villages. Do not have footpaths in USA. Also I like you and Kent. You mesh well with each other.
Love your videos, they always make me smile😊. Only one problem: I need more videos😅😂. Thank you for your hard work, it's highly appreciated that you manage to make me feel relaxed 🙏
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Yay!
Excellent Video Simon very nice walk that Shame you got wet boots HaHa. Well done. Take Care. B. K
I love EVERY video! They are always spot on. Keep em coming Simon
Great Camping Adventure Simon !! Congratulations.
Simon, I cringed when I saw you walking through that water in your leather boots. Oh, Buddy, not good. I’m willing to bet they’ve seen water before though. Wet socks and boots in the morning is less than ideal. So, GoPro has a design problem and won’t help you. Good to know. Makes me rethink buying a GoPro for my Appalachian Trail hike. I’ll be sure to tell my hiking buddies. We get a lot of rain in East Tennessee mountains and fording creeks and rivers is kinda normal. Yep, we’d rather have dry socks and shoes in the morning, heh, heh, which is almost never. A brisk walk warms everything up though. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate! Leather boots are the best boots for wet conditions - as long as they are dried slowly afterwards and treated to a little pampering with leather balm 😁
The microphone cover is only on the media mod for the GoPro, so if you’re just interested in the standard GoPro, this won’t be an issue 😁👍
Hi Simon. Nice reflection shot at about 7 minutes 30 secs.! Deb from Oz
Just what I needed, a nice & calm video!
Hi Simon, a trick I use to do at the end of a canoe day with wet boots and socks was to put a pair of gore-tex socks on top of a pair of dry socks inside my wet boots - i.e. skin/dry socks/gore-tex socks/wet boots; it made the end of the day enjoyable and did not have to bring extra shoes/boots.
Hello Simon Just very pretty countryside you walk in. Those bridges, gates are well 👌 maintained. The drone footage was great. Sorry about your GoPro part went missing hope 😔 you can fix. CHEERS F.NZ.😊
Great video and it looks like the next one is going to be more epic and wet LOL
Looks a lovely walk. I’ve done bits and pieces of it. Know Bungay, Geldeston very well as until recently had family living in that area. I drove to Bungay a couple of weeks ago and the Waveney had turned the flood plains into a lake.
Great video as always. 😊👍👍👍
a couple of plastic bags and a bit of string in your pack bag could save you getting wet feet if you get caught out. i really enjoy coming on your outings with you.
Cracking video looking forward to the next instalment
Cheers Simon. Truly great. Stay with it man.
When I heard panting. I did make me think of lovely old Maggie. Do you plan on getting another travel companion?
The Lock Inn is a cracking pub. Been a few times, sadly not since it reopened after closing. Every time we have booked our campsite something has cropped up and a cancellation has stopped us. Could book Three Rivers but don’t want to pay their prices.
When did the Silo open as we walked our Collie down there from Bungay when we camped there during lockdown. Portaged there a few years back having set off from Rowan Craft to Bungay and back with my Youngest Daughter.
I was looking forward to this as we have walked part of the Angles Way. Didn’t disappoint and looking forward to the next part of the walk.
Hi Simon, thank you for a great channel, I really enjoy your videos, I've recently sumbled upon a couple where your cooking up a feast, one I think included your son? I too am a fan of the Opinel knives, they're amazing sharp, as a teenager I found out the hard way that the Opinel knives have that rotating locking ring at the base of the blade to stop it from folding back on you! I'm sure you know this but had noticed in several of your videos, that you hadn't utilised this feature, I would hate for you, your son or other patrons to come to grief as I did all thoughs years ago! keep up the great work!!
Simon dear
You’re doing a brilliant job. Your English is excellent and your accent is pleasing and amenable. Please try to use more sweet English terminologies when describing your activities or talking about whatever you see in your walks. I’ve subscribed to your channel and am following your work to improve my English. Keep all the good work up and God Bless. Thanks a heap.
Great video back to basics solo walking and camping nice
Nice video, if you put your socks into the sleeping bag with you next to your skin they should dry out for the next day as long as you wring them out. 🤞
a nice but wet epic. see you next time
Love it, love norfolk as well...from good old derbyshire.
Filming is great Simon, that is also a lot of work back and forth for the camera all day. Enjoyed it.
I always enjoy your walking videos, and the Angles Way looks amazing. Surprisingly, i dont think I've done any of it yet ! Your next episode looks exciting 😁
Thanks Heather! It’s a nice route, well worth it for the river sections 😁
Love this content. Many thanks, Simon. 🙂👍
2 pairs of spare socks Simon. Then you can dry a pair attached to your pack or person somewhere have a pair on and pair in the pack. Just rotate. 👍
Just a thank you for allowing us to enjoy your walks and camps. 🇨🇱
Add a couple of Tesco shopping bags to the pack. Put them over your boots when going through water. Nice dry feet.
I was with you bro.... Top quality cinematography and chat.... #outstanding😎👌👏👊
Always love your videos. No drama, just great, wholesome, relaxing content. ❤ Such beautiful countryside and you always just power through it, regardless of the conditions or weather. Sorry about your Go-Pro microphone cover. That's aggravating, especially when Go-Pro has to know it's an issue. At the very least, they should offer that part as a replacement for purchase. Certainly makes me pause about investing in anything Go-Pro. Looking forward to your next leg of this adventure! These videos get me through alot of stressful work days. 😊 I appreciate your efforts! Take care and be safe out there! 👍👍😊😊❤❤
Brilliant stuff, cant get enough of it. 👍
