Jeff Manguson idk man. They hired him for a specific skill. Maybe it’s just extra-noticeable when the sketches are hyper-sexual? Cecily writes about gay culture a lot, same with Julio Torres. They are all very talented and SNL has never had a high batting average. It’s not built to.

One of my favorite skits. It's so bizarre because I think it's well loved by almost everyone but the original airing of it - it seems like people just hardly reacted except for the last 20 seconds.
My cynical side wonders if Larry, being the pro that he is, realized people were not into the sketch so he purposely broke character to get the audience interested. Laughter is contagious. I mean I wouldn't hate on 'im for that, I'd be impressed.
Maybe because it isn't funny. The worst reaction you can get from comedy is no reaction.
