Very Nice Haul…Enjoy your channel and keep up the good works…👍🏻

  • @bookssongsandothermagic

Great set of books - you’ll love the Hitch Hikers books. I really enjoyed All my sins remembered by Joe Haldeman. I’m a fan of Scalzi too, and just reviewed his new own on my channel, ‘The Kaiju Preservation Society’. I have the Simak to read too. Ahhhh The Shrinking Man - one of my favourite books!!

Totally envious about your acquisition of those sweet hard covers of Perdido Street Station and The Scar. I think The Scar surpasses Perdido Street Station in inventiveness and weirdness. The Malarial Queendom haunts my dreams. Also, I had the same edition of Dark Is The Sun when I was a child. The story is good, in that old time science fiction style, long of plot and world building, less focused on character. I still remember the last lines, which, even now, I go back and forth whether it was cheesey or not. You mentioned John Varley, an author which seems largely forgotten on BookTube. Are you referring to the GaeaTrilogy? If so, that trilogy is among my personal top 10, most especially for the the 2nd and 3rd books: Wizard and Demon.

No argument here, The Scar didn't disappoint and was relentless with its weirdness! "The possible sword" that Uther Doul had is maybe the coolest weapon I've ever read about. However, I've only read it once and your comment instantly has me considering a re-read. I recently re-read Perdido Street Station so the timing is right.
And yes! I was referring to the Gaia trilogy, I hadn't thought about it but your right, I've rarely if ever heard Varley discussed on booktube. I really enjoyed those books (I love a book or series with great worldbuilding and exploration), but those are the only books of his I've read. If you have any recommendations of his other work let me know!

The cover for Berserker is by the great John Berkey. Once you become familiar with his art, you will recognize his stuff instantly.

I like how you read books that aren’t talked about that much. That one about the windy canyon sounds wild

The older less talked about stuff appeals to me much more, and while there's other booktubers that talk about the same stuff, there's not nearly enough! That was largely what motivated me to start a channel.

Tuf Voyaging was cool. I just ordered Perdido Street Station since it's your favorite novel, and we seem to have similar tastes. Love those PKD editions you scored.

I hope you enjoy Perdido Street Station. Its been my favorite book for years now despite not being Science fiction (although it has Sf elements). Great worldbuilding and complex characters.

@@sciencefictionreads honestly, i have not. Earth Abides is the one i sought out, so that is the one i have the most excitement about reading first, based on its reputation. The other 2 i picked up randomly in small hauls at random shops. All 3 seem to be worthy of a read though.

I have four thousand books. I buy more than I read. Like i've read 1066 accordingly to goodreads of the more than 4000. All paper. (Almost all, I've got like some audiobooks but not that many). Really enjoying your videos. I undestand what you say you keep stuff for years then you read and love. To me that makes perfect sense. I've got books that I've got really high expectations so I don't read them and keep delaying those gems and reading stuff that I don't know that much about. Don't know if that happens to you. Wish I could change this a bit. But enfin... really appreciate your videos. Moorcock novels, almost all of his novels are set on the eternal champion series. There are lists on the internet if you wish to read but be prepared to read like 120 novels. My advice, go with Elric of Melnibone. It's fantasy, sword and sorcery with a bit of philosophy.

You have an incredible collection! I was watching your videos lastnight. I saw a lot of books and authors on your shelves that i need to look up and try! But yeah, I have many books in my collection that I know I’m going to enjoy, I like to save them for a later time. Some I’ve probably saved too long, I need to change that habit as well before I have too many books and never get to the ones I’m saving lol. I’m really looking forward to the Moorcock/Elric books too!

Completely agree about the cover art of the UK HarperCollins editions of Mieville. My only complaint about those editions is that the paper used for the interior pages isn't completely acid-free, so they start tanning within a few years (to my chagrin).
Earth Abides and Alas, Babylon make great back-to-back reads. They feel surprisingly modern, despite being written in the 1940s and 1950s.
Tuf Voyaging is a connected collection of short stories, most of which are a lot of fun. Very different from ASOIAF.
All of the Moorcock books you displayed are part of his Eternal Champion saga. The Jerry Cornelius stories in the series are among the strangest and least representative of the various Eternal Champions, but they have avid fans. Jerry might have been an inspiration for Austin Powers.
I read Effinger's When Gravity Fails a few years ago, but was underwhelmed. It was okay, but not enough for me to continue the series.
I really like Richard Matheson, but The Shrinking Man isn't one of his best, IMO (although that cover art is quite striking!).

Have to say I think 'Shrinking Man' is one of RM's finest, but it's all personal opinion. As for Jerry Cornelius, they are less typical than the four major Sword & Sorcery strands in the Multiverse, but they're the purest and most interesting in highlighting the shifting reality of Moorcock's cosmology and the battle for balance between Law & Chaos. The two catastoprhe novels you mention feel modern because they're still being widely imitated.

If you guys think Mieville is weird wait until you read his primary influence - M John Harrison.

@@sciencefictionreads -I'd say try and read his stuff in publication order, as it gets VERY strange once you get to the end of the 90s. It's all amazing though. Glad you like Barrington J Bayley, he and M John pretty much created the New Radical Space Opera decades before it became a thing in the 90s.
