Nothing, I repeat, nothing will make a VR6 / R32 turbo durable enough for sustained racing. Just too much heat generation concentrated on too little volume.
Tuned cars with a power focus are fine on the street, track use isn't your standard use case for these cars and this is why

@RhysJ03 I think car had issue which caused overheating. The temps didn't go down despite slow driving, so that's one red flag.
I track my tuned car and this year with just a tiny fix here and there made it sustain 2x 20min. track sessions without problem at just twice over the stock power N54 makes.
But I agree, track shows all the shortcomings build can have, road or 1/4mile racing is much more forgiving.

I drove 21 laps of the ring today after finally getting here from Australia. Mishas videos are fantastic but nothing can capture how intense this track is. I have a whole new level of respect for what he does and how well he does it. If you are thinking about making the trip just do it, there is nothing in the world like driving the Nurburgring.
I'm from Au too, whats the best way to get a drive around the track?

I cant seem to understand people here. Yes, it needs cooling, but again, it depends on driver and track. We saw bunch of videos on here cars overheating and owners themselves never having the same issues, and thats why ? Because not all people are gonna test the limits, and most of the people cant test the limits unless they want to end up in wall. And the fact its VR6, those things really like to heat up even with best cooling...

You guys are cute thinking the McLaren guy was pushing it. Just because someone owns a 200-300k supercar doesn't mean the owner can or wants to risk exploiting the car's limit on track. This tt is average fast (and definitely not even close to 620whp) and this mclaren would put bus lenghts on it if it had a driver like Misha behind its wheel. (Not just in corners also in straight line accel)
till it overheated on 1/3 of the lap and mclaren finishes on 60% power ahead still haha
@@Fizz-Pop The vr6 is very smooth and linear power engine. And this thing was going to go over 290km/h no problem.
Misha next time, before you hop in, ask these guys if they have upgraded cooling for these high powered machines!

Hilarious that Misha takes one look at the build and knows for certain it's going to heat soak.. It was a fucking wild ride for like 10 seconds.. but yeah.. cooling is the first part of the design, oil coolers spec'd properly for the trans and diff, big intercooler for the track, and racing fluids. Plus the proper aero to get the heat out of the engine.. thermal wraps, maintain proper flow, especially on a new engine swap. That build looks almost thrown together, but the potential is realized.. now making it trackable is next. Awesome.

MAJOR heatsoaking going on, even if its fast you can tell the owner has never pushed it properly (not flaming here), the temps dont drop because all the heat exchangers are surrounded with super hot air, and the airflow even while moving isnt enough, also could be tuned for colder weather and is not adjusting fuel properly
Yeah, in addition to at least doubling the cooling capacity he needs to add vents in the hood to allow hot air to escape. Heat wrapping the exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe would help. This would help alleviate some of the heatsoaking. Finally, a massive oil cooler would supplement the cooling system capacity and help keep the temps down.
@@bane2 if his engine bay is stock, he needs to pull out the hot mantle that is under the hood (all Audis have this mantle), and he will not probably able to reposition those coolers because the car has this sump protector that is integral part of the car rigidity, so removing it or making holes is a no-no situation.
Adding vents on the hood may help, but I would say that adding those vents on the bumper, removing the hot mantle and investing in the radiators from the R8 is the way to go.

They shook hands at the end, but you gotta remember Misha is probably a fairly busy guy & has done very many laps here -- babying an overheating car around under 4k rpm is something I assume he tries to avoid generally. For all we know, there was another guy with a fun car (without overheating heating issues) waiting to give it to Misha for a lap that day that got passed up for this one. But also lol all these comments about it can't be bad for the algorithm ;)

This was a really promising machine, the car was able to deliver what was promised, too bad that only for a short amount of time.

Nice car 👍. The VR6 is so compact I'm surprised it doesn't have more cooling issues (naturally).
It does lol.. you have to run 15-40 or 20-50 oil in VR6 because of this.
@@dmanm85 Ah, that makes complete sense. It's funny when people finally understand the layout of a VR6. It's great because it's compact but that makes cooling horrible. Either Inline or a Traditional V will have better cooling (around each cylinder) by default.
For sure, that is it's biggest drawback, and when it gets heat soaked it becomes noticeable on the power.. such a cool engine but has its flaws.
@@dmanm85 💯. I mean it's obviously a great engine and VW has been able to take that layout a long way, with the VR4, VR6, W8, W12 and W16 (and we got a lot of cool cars because of it).

But like you said the heat soak is real (due to it being one large slab of iron)... Mischa seemed pretty shocked by the time it took to cool down lol

Remember to scale the cooling area with the amount of power added. 3 times the HP requires 3 times the cooling.

Beautiful car and a real shame with the heat issues. The VR6 is a very durable block, great for turbo - but it's size means it also hold a lot of heat - I'm in the process of building a similar car and it already has multiple auxilary oil coolers. I hope I'll make it to the ring one day
Just take the front bumper support out from behind number plate and raise the bonnet hinges or take the rubber seal from under the windscreen
Bruh! My favorite ring video of you is still the red big Turbo fiesta ST. That thing was set up big Turbo big intercooler and big Radiator big brakes. And bracing all around. Your smile in that thing was fantastic.

@@Dabril809Only a k24 swapped one. That doesn't really count. He can drive mine if he wants. Stock drivetrain, Recaros, BBK, AR1's, suspension mods and some aero.

@@Dabril809 Why not? More hp doesn't mean better feel. I like the powerband on the F20c better. Also the sound is more refined and it is a better built motor in my opinion. I personally would never swap the f20 for a k20.

I had an old beater, doubled the radiator size, wheels, tires, suspension, bored out throttle body, ram air intake. Never overheated once, just good slow fun!😂

Perfect example of a street car not a track car. It doesn’t have to be the Nurburgring in order to overheat this setup. Any normal track 2 laps tops before this car would do the exact same thing. Cool car, but with this amount of power it needs to stick to the street unless he wants to do a ton more supporting mods.

Get the heaters on hot Full blast and live with the heat in the cabin. Helps massively bring temps down of engine.
I've never seen Misha look so bored behind the wheel 😂 obviously big frustration and largely a waste of a lap when the car can't handle the heat. The silence for two thirds of the lap was like you'd both had a massive argument 🤣🤣

@@WeirdBrick I wouldn't say he was acting like a sulky kid haha. I think it was just frustrating to not manage more than a third of a lap before the car surrendered. Then having to coast pretty much the rest of it when you're used to driving at speed, must be pretty dull when you've been round it thousands of times. He did call the overheating issue right at the start too with the car being modified, so it probably felt like a, FFS I knew this was going to happen, kind of situation.

I always wondered why people do so many modifications to the suspension brakes and chassis but leave the engine completely stock... Now i know exactly why 😜. Bigger radiator with some extra oil and trans coolers seem to be the recipe for success at the "Greatest Toll Road On Earth". People always overlook the supporting mods that come along with increased engine performance. I love the guys with 800whp civic hatchbacks with $3000 coilovers and enough stiffening bars to build another tube chassis civic. Then when you ask about the brakes there like..."Stock calipers and rotors with upgraded pads from amazon, back brakes dont matter as much so its the factory drums" 😲....WHAT!!!!...."Its a light car so bigger better brakes aren't needed"... There rasilization over important safety factors always blow my mind.

24v 3.2l VR6 (R32) I assume, which was offered in the TTs?
I think that the VR6 was not avaible in the TT 8J, the TT S from this generation had a 2.0l TFSI

The Mk2 Audi TT is available with the VR6 until 2010. TTS 2.0tfsi TT RS 2.5 5 cylinder
Sometimes a problem very obvious! They just put the air filter in the engine bay without cold box . So is always sucking the warmer and warmer air ,wich causeoverheating, but also very slowcooldown. I seen many times at this channel this "amateur" mistake.

Vr6 TT is my dream car. Get one, clean it up and keep forever.
Well, we all know that tuner's cars have the tendency to overheat.
Still, the owner saw what his car is capable of, and he got out of the ring with one final upgrade to do: Cooling.
Car got the sweet spot for the engine, the suspension setup is on point (even though Misha does not agree with me), aero is good, will be faster if tyres are grippier, it just needs better cooling.
And better cooling is not a huge headache, nor it is a money sink, so fixing it is doable, if he has the time and the money to do it.
and this is why our VR6 TT doesnt have forced induction.. also funny that they upgraded the brakes (which in the VR6 TT are the same ones you find on the TTS) but didnt do anything about the cooling.
the seat time misha gets in different cars is insane.
It can you have to hold it down for 5 seconds plus and it turns everything off. Also buy the rs grill and fog light inserts they are not blocked, better cooling.

Slam the heaters on full to bring it down quickly. It helps pulls some heat out of the cooling system from the heater core.
Not a car nerd but with some of the overheating cars I question if they would even survive 5 mins on the Autobahn at 9/10 of the limit. It makes sense for drag cars where cooling is not that important for a few seconds max power output but to bring it to a track idk.
The seat & chassis creaking from the geforces generated in the corners was a little funny.
Maybe I'm not hearing what you're hearing, but that's tire rub. Suspension was probably set up only with a driver in mind and also not such extreme g-force driving.

That is unfortunate but lesson learned, I just can't wait for this car redeem itself (You can see it's performance in the first part of the video and it's fixable). Definitely needs a comeback redemption. Can't wait 😁👌

I got close to 50kgs off the front of mine, via carbon hood, lighters fans, LiPo battery, etc., which improved understeer a lot, but it's still quite front heavy.

@@MrShadowofthewind hood difference 10 kg, battery 15kg, fans 5 kg, removing the metal frame around the cooler, keeping windshield wiper fluid at minimum, etc etc. I've accomplished at least close to 50 kgs. I still want to do more, like a carbon intake manifold, which would remove another ~5kg from the very top of the engine.

Overheated already in Adenauer Forst?! VR6 is the worst choice for the TT. Maximum weight on the front axle.

First few minutes where amazing, but am surpised front engine car has that much heat issues? Curious of the cause, be it; (a) radiator and plumping (b) airflow below and above (c) need for oil coolers or just all of the above?

My guess is the engine was deprived of oil, maybe oil levels were too low but because of the G's when turning left it sloshed the oil to the right, temps went through the roof and there is your problem.
What kind of inspection(s) do you do on the car before you drive it?

Oiler cooler and radiators will fix the power loss problem. Honestly this is the whole reason I got away from boosted cars and went to N/A for my sports cars. All the power potential is great, maintenance and heat issues? Not so much.

Misha, if you were going to get an off the shelf coilover for say a 1760 kg m4, what would you say is a preferable spring rate for the ring?
