What a fucking amazing band they talk about Joe Strummer The Ruts and Malcolm Owen were way ahead of the time they should've been huge straight from the heart

Malcolm lived around the corner from me so it just adds to the regret that i never got to see them live. They should have been huge.

It was unfortunate for all the bands I went on to see that The Ruts were my first ever gig. They were so loud and so good that they just blew my mind. Everyone else got compared to that gig and few came close. If you haven’t heard The Crack album give it a go. One of the all time greatest rock/reggae bands. Up there with The Clash in my opinion. Still wonder how much more they could have done if Malcolm hadn’t died. Malcolm spoke to me for a moment during the gig. I was getting crushed at the front and he asked if I was ok and for every one to stop pushing. He seemed like a really nice guy and just a brilliant frontman. Can remember hearing about his passing listening to John Peel .

Saw this group at Leicester University in 1979 . I was devastated by the news of Malcolm Owen's death in 1980. A tragic loss of a raw talent due to Heroin Addiction. RIP Malcolm x

This is fantastic thanks for sharing. No footage of them performing live in the UK it took the sharp precocious musical tastes of the french to realise the greatness of the Ruts. I have been a fan of the Ruts for over 40 yrs now was too young and living outside the UK to get to see them perform with Malcom , everything about this band is perfect, Vocals, lyrics, bass lines, guitar riffs/sound drums sound energy etc etc. If I had a time machine I would just set the controls for every gig they ever played.

IMHO their lone LP should be required listening at school ;)

It really is a transcendent sort of thing, at least at first... I have had friends who could pick up a bag once a month or less, and not get hooked... but they were just doing it for kicks. I was using it to escape and got sucked in deep. I suspect Malcolm was in the same boat. Even after my life had fallen apart to the point where I was permanently miserable, where no amount worked any more and I badly wanted out, getting clean was still immensely difficult. It's been a largely tough year and a half since then. Definitely not something I would recommend messing around with, to say the least.
